when I was in college I never put the side cover of my PC on, because my dorm doesn't have aircon, so I have to put a small fan blowing into it all the time

and I never had any problem. it just looks ugly is all.

just make sure you dust it regularly... dust is as dangerous as water for computers!

Of course I'd have to make double-sure that I dust/clean it constantly or cover it again when it's humid, but I'm just wondering.

If you do not have external air/fan blowing, then you might overheat some parts more then others with the cover open.
Best is to have a big fan (12cm) at the back sucking air out (and the cover closed)
Even better is having an additional fan at the front blowing air over the HDD(s)

Most new motherboards have additional pins where you can connect those fans.

I dlded a subs file, but it didn't work so I deleted it. A couple hours later when I turned the computer on again, the file is there again. I can't seem to delete it, no matter what I do. I keep getting an error, saying something like "can't find file". I can't throw it away, can't even change the name of the file.. it even is 0 bytes.

Please help me to get rid of this file!

By 'turn on' you mean resume? or 'cold boot'?
A file can re-appear because of a program (your media player probably) is keeping a reference open.
Rebooting the machine and delete via a command prompt.
If you click/preview it you might make a new reference, preventing you from deleting it.

By 'turn on' I mean turning it on again after turning it completely off. Not standby or anything.

How/where can I access 'command prompt' ? (sorry, I'm still a noob when it comes to computers).

if your not into cmd prompt thingy, try this

create a .txt
paste this code

echo going to try to delete your file; ready?
pause
del "C:\your folder\your sub folder\yourdummyfile.sub" /F

change the path by yours ( keep the quotes )

save it as a .bat
double click it

or maybe you could try Unlocker ?

I tried creating the .txt and saving it as .bat
That all works, but it doesn't do anything to the file. I think I may write file name wrong. It has several spaces in it (AKB48 - AKBINGO! 090514 ), how do I deal with them?

Unlocker won't install, because I have a 64 bit windows..

edit: btw, just realized it's probably not the actual subs file. I think it's one of those files firefox creates while dlding something. If that's the case, that's the extention of the file?

Can't you see the file extension?
There's an option in windows to have file extensions hidden but nobody should have this set as it's safer when you can see the file extensions (for example when downloading files, in case you've been tricked into downloading something dodgy).

You could try opening notepad and seeing if you can save a file over the troublesome file. If it lets you save over it then try deleting it afterwards.

Another thing you could try is moving everything out of the folder so it's safe, then delete the entire folder.

Most files can be deleted after a reboot. One time I had a file I couldn't delete, when I tried to delete it it said it couldn't delete it because it didn't exist! In the end I found something called DelinvFile 2.02 and that enabled me to delete it.

So I just got 4gb of memory. Running 64-bit Win 7 RC, but my system doesn't address the full 4gb. I noticed it doesn't show 4gb in my BIOS when I boot up either. My mobo is pretty old, and uses socket 939 amd cpus. Is this a problem with my BIOS or mobo? I have the latest BIOS.

How much does it show in the BIOS?
If its like 2GB you have memory that doesn't play well with your motherboard.
If you have something like 3.2GB then you might need to set a setting allowing to use the remaining as 'above 4GB' which then should make it available to W7 (although some older motherboard do not have that setting).

ok I guess I didn't have the latest BIOS, they didn't have an update for a couple of years so I assumed that they stopped support for my mobo. Weird cause I thought I checked a few months ago, but the last update was released over a year ago. But I updated and it sees it now. Thanks anyways

I was interested in the future upgrade capabilities of my new computer, and was trying to figure out how high I can upgrade the CPU on my motherboard and... with all these different Intel chips out I'm a bit confused as to which is the 'best' my motherboard can support, a list of which follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo (Wolfsdale core) E8xxx (65W)
Core 2 Duo E6xxx (Conroe core) up to E6850 (65W)
Pentium E2xxx series (Conroe core) with Dual Core technology up to E2160 (65W)
Core 2 Duo E4xxx (Conroe core) (65W)
Celeron 4xx series (Conroe core) up to Celeron 450 (35W)

I currently have an E2200 in there now... can anyone help me sort through this?

^ Usually newer is better (faster). From the CPU's listed the dual core Wolfdale (E8xxx) is newest. If you want even more processing power, it might be interesting to investigate if your motherboard supports quad core Yorkfield CPUs (Q8xxx and Q9xxx series).

Everything with a Conroe core is 'old'. Celeron 4xx series is single core.

What motherboard do you actually have? Chances are you can run just about any LGA775 chip in it as long as you have a decent powersupply if you're going for a Quadcore.

umm...guys? I was wondering about my HD. Can it delete stuff even if you dont? I found out it deleted at 2:00 and nobody was there to do it. I was wondering if that can actually happen

@ckd you mean some files are missing out of nowhere? or is it because of corrupt data? As far as i know no... it can't delete your data by itself (well maybe except some antiviruses will delete a file if it sees it as a virus)

however, i found this weird virus in my friend's comp once... it hides all his data by changing the property of the files. so I had to go to tools->folder option. go to the "view" tab, choose "show hidden files and folder" and unchecked "hide protected operating system files"

Hard to say what the exact problem is right now, but here are some things you can do in the mean time with some free software.

Run scans with some anti-virus software like Avast or AVG if you think it's a virus problem, or just to be safe.

Use a program like recuva to restore those missing/deleted files.

I'd also recommend Spinrite if you can afford to buy it. Corrects errors in your HD before they become a problem if used preemptively. Can even work to fix the errors in hard drives that are seemingly broken and useless. Well worth the investment.
