The new face in Elmwood-East Kildonan is familiar to anyone who's followed the Winnipeg Jets.

Thomas Steen beat former CTV reporter Shaneen Robinson by 219 votes to replace 21-year counci veteran Lillian Thomas as city councillor.

Steen also beat out a challenge by former River East School Board trustee Rod Giesbrecht.

Also running were Gordon Warren, a biofuels researcher, and Nelson Sanderson, a businessman.

The outcome of last night's vote would've been completely different if Geisbrecht, who lost the NDP nomination to Robinson, hadn't thrown his hat into that ring. That split the vote on the left to Steen's advantage.

Issues in the race focused on crime and better use of local community centres to keep youth busy.

Ryan Smyth was just about to take his pre-game nap on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles when three familiar faces showed up at his door, bearing luggage and gifts.

"Kenny (Lowe), Barrie (Stafford) and Sparky (Lyle) Kulchisky surprised me by bringing the game sheet from my first NHL game on Jan. 22, 1995, all framed and everything.

"I actually was playing against the Kings that night ... and my first shift was against Wayne Gretzky," said the 34-year-old Smyth, one of the most popular players to wear an Edmonton Oilers uniform.

Smyth will play his 1,000th career NHL game on Saturday night against the visiting Nashville Predators at the Staples Center.

Lowe, the former Oilers medical trainer; Stafford, the team's former equipment manager; and Kulchisky, the ex-all-purpose equipment guy, made the trip to L.A. to salute Smyth with Smyth's wife, Stacey, setting up the secret visit.

"This guy bled Oilers blue, truly a class act," said Stafford.

In honor of Ryan Smyth playing his 1,000th NHL game Saturday night, his teammates decided to honor him with wigs duplicating the mullet he used to wear.
