Pheonix is making a lot of moves to try and get competitive. I wonder if it'll pan out for them.

Phoenix is now officially The Southwest Oilers where the Rangers were Oilers East.

But yeah man taiyou. Lowe just lost Spacek, Peca, Laraque, Dvorak, and prolly Samsanov now with Lupul on board. He's got shit to spend and there's plenty of depth in the minors. Someone's gotta wanna dump salary soon so he's just waiting and waiting like a hawk!

The thing that was so awesome about Pronger was he's 6'6" but so slick. Tape-to-tape passes. When he blocks, he doesn't like flop like a seal like the Canes (see Commodore). HE IS WORTH 7 million plus. Fuckin all that insane amount of money being spent. IT was like. CBA? What CBA?

I'll miss him. The Oilers fans should NOT boo him when the Ducks come to town. He was stand up and repped the team well despite the circumstances. If he didn't have his personal issues, I'm sure he'd stay.

Enjoy him taiyou . Pronger will make you want to become gay. Esp. when pre-skate warm up when he has his hair slicked back.

I LOVED what K.Lowe said "Hey St Louis had Macinnis and Pronger for a number of years and they weren't winning championships."

Hmm...surprised Asmo hasn't mentioned Steve Yzerman retiring :P

NEEDS to make a Laraque Thread. brb.

Well good for him. It shows that he knows the value in finishing/continuing his education. There's plenty of time for him to turn pro and join the Blues. No need to rush it.

SHANAHAN SAYS YES TO RANGERS

"Brendan Shanahan, a three-time Stanley Cup winner in Detroit and one of the NHL's most accomplished veterans, was seeking a new challenges.

He'll find them next season on Broadway with the Rangers.

The Post has learned the 37-year-old free-agent left winger has accepted a one-year contract worth approximately $4M to join the Rangers after spurning more lucrative offers from both the Red Wings and Canadiens.

The signing, expected to be announced today, comes one day after Shanahan informed Montreal GM Bob Gainey he was rejecting his team's bid to sign him.

Shanahan, who scored 40 goals last season for Detroit, has registered 598 goals in a 17-year career that began in New Jersey in 1987, and included stays in St. Louis and Hartford prior to his decorated tour in Detroit. Though he is not the physical menace he was as a younger player, he remains a strong skater who excels in a north-south game, a presence on the ice while possessing one of the best shots in the league.

In addition, he brings charisma and leadership to the locker room that should augment the attributes of Jaromir Jagr, both on and off the ice. Shanahan may or may not skate on Jagr's line at even strength, but there is no doubt the right-handed-shooting left winger will skate on the first power-play unit. In theory, the Rangers may have the most dangerous PP bookends from the circles in the league.

This signing isn't a case of the Rangers bribing a veteran to wear their uniform. This isn't Valeri Kamensky or Theo Fleury. Indeed, sources have told The Post that Shanahan sought out the Blueshirts after having received offers from several teams including Detroit and Montreal.

The Post has learned that after Shanahan had visited Manhattan on Wednesday to meet with Ranger front-office and coaching personnel - a "Welcome Brendan Shanahan" message with a visual of Shanny wearing the Blueshirt went up on the Garden Seventh Avenue marquee to coincide with his visit - the Rangers increased their original $3.5M offer in order to signal their commitment to completing the deal."

http://www.nypost.com/sports/rangers/bway_brendan_rangers_larry_brooks.htm

That better be true

POTI TO ISLES

"While the Blueshirts were adding Shanahan, the Islanders announced they had signed former Ranger free-agent defenseman Tom Poti to a one-year deal worth $2.5M. Poti, who had 23 points (3-20) while going plus-16 for the Blueshirts, originally came to Broadway from Edmonton at the 2003 trade deadline for Mike York, now an Islander."

YES! We finally got rid of him :yay:

Shanahan is a great player. Sad to see him leave Motown. Still, the new Wings are a very fast finesse club, and Shanahan is a slower old-style power forward now. The Rangers with other players in that style might be a better fit for him.

It has been confirmed! :w00t:

Shanahan leaves Red Wings for one-year deal with Rangers

NEW YORK (AP) - Brendan Shanahan became the second big-time forward to say goodbye to the Detroit Red Wings this offseason, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $4 million with the New York Rangers on Sunday.

The 37-year-old forward joined longtime Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman as players who won't be returning to Hockeytown. Yzerman announced his retirement last week after 22 years in Detroit.

Now the Red Wings have more than just goaltending issues to deal with after posting the NHL's best record last season. In the span of seven days, they lost their biggest leader in Yzerman and their top goal scorer in Shanahan, who netted 40 last season in his ninth year with the Wings and 18th in the league.

"It really came down to an instinct I had," Shanahan said. "Detroit has a great past and a great future ahead of them as well, but I guess I just felt that maybe I was identified with the past a little bit more than the future."

The Rangers, notorious for overspending on top-name players often past their prime, had been relatively quiet in the first week of free agency. They added forward Matt Cullen and defenseman Aaron Ward from the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes while other clubs quickly filled up space on the $44 million salary cap by handing out big-ticket deals.

With room to spend, the Rangers targeted Shanahan, who has 598 goals - 15th on the NHL career list - and 634 assists with New Jersey, St. Louis, Hartford, and Detroit. He turned down equal or higher-valued deals from the Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens.

Both Rangers general manager Glen Sather and Shanahan sought to complete a one-year contract. Each cited the pressure to perform and extra motivation as factors in making a short-term commitment.

"To take on a new challenge was a little scary and exciting at the same time," Shanahan said. "I like the feeling of having to go out and proving your worth every year."

Shanahan said he received offers for multiple years for several teams, but decided to join the Rangers after taking a tour this week of the team's practice facility in Westchester County, viewing residential areas, and spending time in Manhattan.

He isn't sure how long he wants to play, but if the fit is right Shanahan wouldn't mind spending a few years in the Big Apple.

And Sather was plenty glad to have him, a player he said the Rangers had at the top of their free-agent wish list. The original thought was that Shanahan was likely to remain with the Red Wings, but once it became known that New York was an option, Sather moved quickly to get a deal done.

"I said to Glen that I wasn't trying to bust the door to get out of Detroit," Shanahan said.

The Rangers have shifted course in recent years in an attempt to rebuild the team with youth. New York snapped a seven-season playoff drought this year but were swept in the first round by New Jersey. Shanahan won three Stanley Cup titles with the Red Wings.

"I saw them as a team that made tremendous strides last year," he said. "I was really impressed with their desire to improve on that."

Shanahan earned $2.28 million in Detroit last season when, while working on a one-year deal, he recorded the sixth 40-goal season of his career and first since the 1999-2000 campaign.

One of the last true power forwards in the game, the seven-time All-Star will be a good complement to Jaromir Jagr - who will not have to bear the full offensive burden next season.

"We were really looking for someone that could share a leadership role on our team," Sather said. "Someone that could play on the power play, someone who was going to be able to move people around in front of the net and someone with a great shot. And Brendan certainly has all of those."

Shanahan, the strongest advocate for rules changes during the NHL lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season, took advantage once the game returned with less clutching, grabbing and mauling in front of the net. That is where the 6-foot-3, 220-pound left winger is most effective, especially with the man advantage.

He scored 14 goals on the power play, a unit in New York that should be even more potent than last season when Jagr netted 24 of his club-record 54.

"He's big and he's strong and he's a great team guy," Sather said. "As we got closer to the end of the season, we found that maybe we needed a little some more size up front, and his experience in the playoffs would be a huge help for us."

http://www.nhl.com/news/2006/07/276988.html

The Rangers are looking pretty good. All we need is one offensive defenseman and we should make it to the playoffs again. Jagr and Shanahan are gonna rule the NHL next season!

I LOVE that article. Esp. this part

Quote
.. In so many cities (hello, Tampa) it seems like an NHL game is a 2-hour gathering of enthusiasts, like stamp collectors or Mercury Merkur owners. When the arena doors are flung open at the end of the night, that hockey feeling vanishes.

Carolina,  Tampa Bay. do they even realize what kinda prize they have?

That's a good pick up. Shanny is a pretty tough sumbitch and Rangers need that Canadian character...good luck on the offfensive defensemen though. Oilers are still looking for em. WTF with the Euros :? Hejda?  Tjarnqvist? WHO?

I'm pretty pumped Darryl Sutter has resigned - that punk biotch!!

Quote
Just two seasons removed from a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, Calgary Flames coach Darryl Sutter suddenly resigned Tuesday night, according to a report by CHQR Radio.

Sutter, 47, will remain as general manager of the Flames, who are expected to name assistant Jim Playfair as their new coach at a noon EDT news conference Wednesday.

and Marc Chouinard signed with the Canucks!! damn i thought oilers were gonna sign him

OILERS FANS!! LARAQUE FANS!!

actually at 8 am. I'm tempted to put on my :pimp: and ask Georges Laraque for a recorded shout out for HiP Radio, my fanside I just wanna tell him straight up thanks for 9 great seasons...thanks for being an epic member of the community. Truly a class act. I guarantee he will be there till the last fan leaves.

Sadly, wtih like Chris Simon signing with the Isles...the enforcer. The Battle of Alberta has taken a new look.

Weak, to the fuckin' Leafs?  Fuck no.  Not even Lindros stayed in Toronto.  Cup?  Oilers ain't coming that close to the Cup for another 15 years - Ryan Smyth is damn good, but I dunno.  Without another HUGE leader like Prongs or Peca, I dunno.

Based on what I hear in Canada, the way the Islanders handled this whole issue has made them, particularly Wang, has made them the laughing stock of the league

Laraque feels for Zidane

By FRANK LANDRY, EDMONTON SUN

Former Oiler tough guy Georges Laraque says he's had a few racial slurs fired his way during his NHL career - and he remembers how they made him feel.

That's why Laraque's not surprised over the way French soccer star Zinedine Zidane reacted when Italian opponent Marco Materazzi allegedly called him a terrorist during Sunday's World Cup final.

"When it has happened to me, when I have heard a racial slur - which is not many times - I just snap," Laraque said.

"Then you do something ... you don't really know. You just react."

Zidane head-butted Materazzi in the chest, knocking him to the ground, and was ejected from the game. France went on to lose in penalty kicks.

The Paris-based anti-racism advocacy group SOS-Racism later issued a statement, quoting several sources who alleged Materazzi called Zidane a "dirty terrorist."

Materazzi denied making the comment.

Los Angeles Kings forward Sean Avery allegedly hurled a racial slur at Laraque when the teams met in L.A. last October.

Laraque said Avery called him "a monkey," which Avery denied.

When comments like that are made, the first reaction is to "stand up for who you are," Laraque said, adding that racism isn't a big problem in the NHL.

Bill Gilhespy, president and CEO of the Edmonton Soccer Association, said sometimes players will fire off slurs to rattle other players and put them off their game.

He said it's too bad these things happen because kids look up to professional athletes as role models.

Zidane, whose parents emigrated to France from Algeria, became a proud symbol of a multicultural France and is adored in Algeria.
