Game mismanagement falls on 49ers, not ref

To hear coach Mike Singletary and offensive coordinator Mike Martz tell it, the San Francisco 49ers got a raw deal Monday night.

In reality, the 49ers might have been better off with ESPN's Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski managing the final four seconds of their 29-24 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals.

There can be no other reasonable conclusion after a careful deconstruction of the facts.

Romo ready to return, doesn't expect problems from broken pinkie

IRVING, Texas -- Tony Romo laughed at the notion his return to the Dallas lineup will be the complete cure for the struggling Cowboys.

"We will find out on Sunday," Romo said. "A lot of different people may have gotten to a point where they feel we might not have a chance to do what we hoped to do at the beginning of the year. ... I think that is something that can bring a team together."

The Cowboys (5-4) have gone from Super Bowl favorites to third place in the NFC East by losing four of their last six. They are 1-2 since Romo broke the pinkie on his throwing hand but had the same record in the three games before he got hurt.

Ocho Cinco says McNabb helped him put his team first

Chad Ocho Cinco is crediting Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb with helping him adjust his attitude at the start of training camp.

Ocho Cinco, who had spent the offseason criticizing the Bengals and broadly hinting to the media that he would appreciate a trade out of Cincinnati, said McNabb helped convince him to put his teammates first and forget about his personal disappointments, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Ocho Cinco, calling McNabb a close friend, said McNabb reminded him that while he might feel miserable, millions of people would gladly trade places with him.

Johnson wrestles his biggest foe: himself

KANSAS CITY -- Just a few days before the start of training camp in 2006, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson strolled into the team's practice facility and stared at a surprising sight. There was his Pro Bowl running back, Larry Johnson, lifting weights alone. It was a scene that made Peterson smile proudly. While other players were enjoying their remaining time off, his star was preparing for his first full season as the foundation of the Chiefs' offense.

Instead, Peterson sank into a cushy leather chair behind a massive oak desk and carefully tried to find the right words to express his disappointment with Johnson, a player whose myriad off-the-field problems now have put his Chiefs career in jeopardy. Peterson talked about all the conversations he's had with Johnson, all the times he'd stood by Johnson when the public scrutinized him and the bond Peterson had forged with the running back in the process.

What Peterson didn't have to say was obvious: He was taking Johnson's current plight personally.

Attorney says Jones has finished alcohol counseling, awaits decision

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has completed the requirements for alcohol counseling, as mandated by the NFL following his latest violation of the league's personal conduct policy.

Jones' attorney, Worrick Robinson, said Jones has returned to Dallas and is awaiting a ruling from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the possibility of reinstatement.

Steelers' Ward on Bengals' revenge: 'Their heads should be on a swivel'

PITTSBURGH -- If the Cincinnati Bengals are seeking retribution for his hit that broke linebacker Keith Rivers' jaw last month, Hines Ward said they know where to find him Thursday night.

Revenge factor or not, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver expects it will be the Bengals -- as usual -- that end up getting the worst of the AFC North matchup physically.

"I always keep my head on a swivel," Ward said Tuesday. "It's football. ... Their heads should be on a swivel."

Some Bengals players hinted at payback after Ward's block ended Rivers' season during Pittsburgh's 38-10 victory on Oct. 19. Rivers, who can't oppose Ward again until next season, said, "You reap what you sow. What goes around comes around."

A year after Sean Taylor's murder, NFL players still live in fear.

First comes the gate, a heavy metal barrier that halts visitors' cars about 100 feet from Clinton Portis' waterfront condo in Miami. It's manned by a security guard who reaches out from behind thick glass to check the ID of each driver and passenger, while high-tech cameras snap pictures of their faces and license plates, before allowing them to pass. The immaculately groomed grounds of cobblestone and palm trees are fortified with well-disguised cameras by the front door, the loading dock, the concierge desk and the private guest elevator. After navigating past those, plus a metal door secured with a dead bolt and a wall-mounted computerized alarm system, guests are finally allowed entry into Portis' sanctuary in the sky.

Enjoying a rare weekend off, the NFL's second-leading rusher is on his couch, yawning constantly while watching college football. He's wearing pajama pants, orange footies and a white T-shirt emblazoned with a picture of friend and departed Skins teammate Sean Taylor. Favoring a sore left knee, Portis shuffles across his marble floor to show off the views. To the east, windsurfers ride the glassy waters of the bay. To the west, Miami's skyline. And behind the blinds to the north: another shiny condo tower, where a woman stands on her balcony, peering directly at a startled Portis.

Cowboys CB Jones expected to return Dec. 7 against Steelers

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The NFL is giving Adam "Pacman" Jones another chance.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday the suspended cornerback has been reinstated by league commissioner Roger Goodell, but he must miss two more games -- this Sunday and the following game on Thanksgiving. He'll be back Dec. 7 at Pittsburgh.

Goodell suspended Adam Jones indefinitely on Oct. 14, saying he'd put a timeframe on it after the cornerback missed at least four games. This decision means it will be a six-game suspension. Jones also missed the entire 2007 season. By the time he returns, he will have been suspended from 22 of a possible 28 games.

His yearlong suspension was for repeated legal troubles while with the Tennessee Titans. Over the offseason, he was traded to Dallas and then given another chance by Goodell. The Cowboys gave him a bodyguard to help keep him in line, but on Oct. 7, Jones got into an alcohol-related scuffle with the bodyguard during a private party at a Dallas hotel.

Now, he's getting another chance. The league did not immediately make any comment.

"He's just chomping at the bit to get back and come back and be successful," teammate Tank Johnson said Wednesday, before the announcement. "He knows we're all with him and we're never going to turn our back on him and as soon as he gets back it will be business as usual. I can't wait to have 21 next to me in the locker."

Jerry Jones said Adam Jones could return to practice Monday. The owner said the player would have "limited participation" this week, but would not be part of full-squad practices or conditioning.

Quarterback Tony Romo said Jones will be welcomed back into the locker room.

"When he was here he worked very hard and he helped us," Romo said. "He's a good football player and I don't see why you wouldn't welcome a guy back that works hard on the practice field."

Bengals deactivate Ocho Cinco for game against Steelers

PITTSBURGH -- The Cincinnati Bengals have deactivated receiver Chad Ocho Cinco for Thursday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers for violation of a team rule.

The Bengals would not elaborate further on why Ocho Cinco was deactivated. The team said there will be no comment until after the game.

The Steelers (7-3) will host the Bengals (1-8-1) at 8:15 p.m. ET at Heinz Field.

Reserve receiver Chris Henry likely will start in place of Ocho Cinco.

Ocho Cinco had ankle surgery in June and a shoulder injury in August, and has not been as involved in the Bengals' offense as much as in previous years. Meanwhile, his former college teammate, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, has become the team's primary receiver.

Houshmandzadeh leads the NFL with 73 catches, and has four touchdowns. Ocho Cinco, a down-field threat in previous years, has 41 catches, none for more than 22 yards.

In Virginia facing state dogfighting charges, Vick's involvement revealed

Suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick placed family pet dogs into a ring and his trained pit bulls "caused major injuries" to the pets at Bad Newz Kennels, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report released on Friday.

The 17-page report, prepared by the USDA's inspector general-investigations division, provided some new details on Vick's participation in Bad Newz Kennels, the dogfighting operation financed by Vick and formed along with his friends Tony Taylor, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips.
