NFL probing Mangini's actions

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Browns coach Eric Mangini can't seem to escape from New York.

The NFL is investigating Mangini's role in the Jets' failure to list quarterback Brett Favre's arm problem on injury reports last season. Mangini coached the Jets during Favre's one season in New York before he was fired after the team collapsed down the stretch.

Last week, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum admitted the club should have listed Favre, who had a torn biceps tendon, as "probable" on the injury report for the last four or five games. Favre said the Jets knew of the injury, which required offseason surgery.

Spokesman Greg Aiello said Mangini's actions will be examined as part of the league's inquiry.

"Since he was head coach of the Jets at the time, we are reviewing his role in the situation as part of the overall review," Aiello said in an e-mail response to The Associated Press.

On Monday, commissioner Roger Goodell said he expects to rule on the matter this week. The Jets and Mangini could be subject to a fine.

Mangini said he has always abided by the league's guidelines for injury reports.

"That was true there [New York]. It's true here," Mangini said. "It'll be true every week of the season and that's how we approach it."

Goodell said the Favre case is an opportunity to stress that all teams must abide by the injury report rules.

"We establish policies. They're to be followed. And all 32 clubs are going to be held accountable for that and, unfortunately, when someone violates it, the other 31 know that," he said.

Associated Press

CANTON, Ohio -- Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith headline the preliminary list of modern-era nominees for induction next year in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The list released Saturday includes 131 players, coaches and contributors.

Hall of Fame selectors will chose 25 semifinalists by Nov. 27, and 15 finalists by Jan. 7.

Voting will take place Feb. 6, the day before the Super Bowl.

Other modern-era nominees include Tim Brown, Herschel Walker, Cris Carter, Andre Reed and Sterling Sharpe. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue is also on the list.

They join two previously announced senior nominees, former Detroit Lions cornerback Dick LeBeau and former Denver Broncos running back Floyd Little.

CBS peeps said it best. Darren Sproles = One man team. And Joe Flacco can suck my golden penis. Chargers got robbed. It was a clear pass interference or whatever when Jackson or whomever got pushed in the back prior to the reception.

Officials should retire for missing that.

People here were pissed that they kept saying the Cowboys Stadium is in Dallas, when it's in Arlington.  But the local media all refer to it as Jerry World.  Somewhere Thimas is crying.  Poor Romo.

RB Barber sidelined with quad injury

Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys said Monday that running back Marion Barber has a quadriceps injury and his return isn't yet known.

Coach Wade Phillips said Barber had an MRI on Monday, a day after he was hurt on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' 33-31 loss to the Giants.

"We don't know exactly where he is," Phillips said. "Other than that, I think we came out fairly well injury-wise."

Barber gingerly walked off the field after his final run in the home opener. The hard-running Barber appeared to stumble on his own just before getting tackled at the 7, setting up Felix Jones' touchdown run the next play.

Barber had 18 carries for 124 yards with a 2-yard touchdown, the first scored in the new Cowboys Stadium. Jones finished with 96 yards rushing and Dallas had 251, its most since 1993.

The Cowboys host Carolina next Monday.
