I can remember that you needed to wait, at the gamescom, more than 200 minutes to be able to play ZombieU. O_O

Gameplay from ZombiU for the Wii U. Looks like it has some pretty cool ideas.

Oh so that's what's up with the Wii U, looks pretty interesting.

It's Halloween, is anyone getting into the spirit and playing some scary games? I've already picked up my save from RE2 which I haven't played in a while. Got past the sewers with the giant spiders which is still one of the most unsettling things I've seen in a game. *shudders*

And right on time, a new trailer for Amnesia : A Machine For Pigs was released. Looks and sounds genuinely intimidating.

Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry etc) has a new game coming out, one which is 'a return to survival horror'.

Quote
Shinji Mikami's The Evil Within is developed using id Tech 5, according to Bethesda's Japanese website for the game.

The site also reveals a number of additional plot and gameplay details from the game. According to Gematsu, which has translated the text, The Evil Within is centered around Detective Sebastian and his partner, who attend the scene of a mass murder and find a powerful, mysterious force lying in wait.

Sebastian, along with other police offers at the scene, are attacked and lose consciousness, eventually waking up in a world inhabited by monsters. Sebastian must figure out what happened and find a way out, but will need to face his own fears in order to do so.

Bethesda's blog talks up Mikami's involvement, describing him as the "father of the survival horror genre" and describes a game very much in line with traditional survival horror conventions.

"Players must survive on limited resources, experiencing that supreme match of action and horror, that indescribable terror. To survive in an afflicted world, your anxiety and nerves will be pushed to the edge."

Traps are seemingly a key part of gameplay, both in survival and combat: "You'll have to face indescribable terror, cruel traps, and sly mechanisms. Players can die in a trap all too easily, however, at times they can turn them against enemies"

Finally, the site describes a world that "distorts and warps according to mysterious and evil horrors".

"The scenery: hallways, walls, doors, rooms, buildings, and even nature, all transforming in real time based on the player's actions. And the threats keep coming from all directions."

They released a teaser trailer too. It's all live action so there's no gameplay but man...this trailer is still pretty impressive. I'd say it's on par with horror movie trailers.

MOMMA

PAPPA

WAAAHHHHHH

... Can't wait to watch a playthrough on youtube! :D

EDIT: I realize now that one of the reasons why Roger Ebert's passing was sad to me is that he never was convinced that video games could be art! It always bothered me because I generally liked him and respected his opinion, but I disagreed with him on that so much. I think just because the viewer isn't only passive, but is active in participating in the story, doesn't mean it can't be art (watching a movie/painting or reading a book vs. playing a video game). And some of the stories are incredible. And I know you guys will back me up in some game worlds being so imaginative and breath-takingly beautiful that saying this creation can't be art is...mad.

^ Definately agree with you there. In Ebert's defence I think he did say later that it could be possible for games to be art but he just didn't have the time to play one or become immersed in one. I don't think every game should be judged as such. There's plenty of room for some mindless entertainment after all. But there are games which are interactive and entertaining but also effective at making you feel something, whether that's in the art assets, immersing you in that world or telling a great story. Maybe all three like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Journey etc

I can see myself playing this in the middle of the night, hunching under a blanket so no monster can grab me from the back... ah good old Project Zero times XD

But serously, when I sidestep through a narrow space, I  look in the direction I'm heading and not straight at the wall (how claustrophobic)
I can see this is a tool of suspense in this case, but everytime it happened, it annoyed me.
Also if these monster dudes pop up at random without the slightest warning, count me out.

I started Dead Space. The sound and atmosphere is really creepy and the first encounters with necromorphs really got my little heart pumping, but that was on Chapter 1. Now it seems I have gotten used to it, too quickly. Also the amount of ammo I find and carry around with me isn't really halping me to feel scared/helpless and cautious. Now I'm starting chapter 4 and the sound and occasional jump scare is all the scary there is.
The only thing that really get's me EVERYTIME and I mean like makes me jump out ot the chair or almost drop the controller, is when I recieve transmissions from Kendra or that Harmond?/Hammond? guy. Even when I know they are coming, like at the beginning of a chapter XD

Nevertheless, I'm really enjoying the game so far.

Amnesia : A Machine For Pigs sounds very atmospheric and supposedly tells a great story, but apparently disappointed those who were expecting more of the same scares from the first game. I would say that it was a result of the game not being developed by the original developer, Frictional Games, but by another developer called The Chinese Room, makers of Dear Esther, another game renowned for atmosphere but with barebones gameplay.

I bring this up because those hoping for more of the same may be glad to now that recently, the original developers revealed their next game, SOMA. Which is certainly being sold as Amnesia but in space. Perhaps most interesting to me is their talk of really focusing on the story and with that comes with telling one around an interesting premise, the soul. I've seen the developer raise questions they want to tackle such as “Can machines be conscious?” and “Do we have free will?”, which is fascinating and could lead to a very effective sci-fi horror. What makes it hard is the wait for it to be released in 2015.

Gameplay tease below:

And an unsettling, creepy live action trailer below. This is how you do marketing well.
