Chapter 29
“Could I have a word with you?” It sounded like what a teacher would say to you after you had done badly on a test or something, Airi thought, like you needed to be reprimanded for something but it was no teacher who was wanting to talk to her, it was Nakky.
Airi was glad that Nakky had sought her out however, she had been keeping a sort of distance from her meaning they hadn't really talked in a while, something they had done regularly enough in the past, Airi had come to the conclusion that she must of annoyed Nakky in some way and though she did not really know what she had done to possibly upset her friend it seemed as though she perhaps wanted to talk about it.
“I have something I want to tell you” Nakky said, breaking the silence between the two girls
Airi looked at her friend “What is it Nakky, you seem to be upset with me, I was so worried, have I done something wrong?”
“N-no” Nakky was taken aback by the concern Airi was showing for her “It's just that, I've been worried about how to admit this to you, I mean, she's your best friend and all”
“My best friend? You mean Maimi?” Airi asked confused “She hasn't upset you has she?”
“No it's not that, well yes it involves Maimi but....”
“What is it Nakky” Airi said, trying to comfort her “You can tell me”
“I like Maimi”
Airi was stunned by what Nakky had said, she never realized Nakky felt that way about Maimi, she knew they were quite close but never though that she liked Maimi like, well, like that, how did she miss it and why, why did knowing this feel so bad to her, almost as if it hurt?
“I-I never knew, I don't know what to say” Airi muttered still trying to take in this shocking news and how she felt about it.
“I've liked her for a while now” Nakky replied smiling “I just thought it best that you know that, I'm planning to ask her out”
“You've liked her for a while?” Airi asked almost in a daze before all of Nakky's words sunk in “Eh! Your going to ask her out” she asked in a panic
“Yes, she's all ways been so kind to me, she makes me feel special, I know she hangs out with you a lot but your just friends right? I feel as though I can be more than her friend, give her more than a friend can, I can give her my love.”
“Yes just, just friends” Airi echoed Nakky's words not keeping up with the other girls conversation. I mean, it's not like I ever had feelings for Maimi right? Airi asked herself, it's not as though I gave my love to her, I threw my own away.
“Do, do you think Maimi likes you back” Airi asked, she did not really want to know but, at the same time felt as though she needed too
“I believe she does” Nakky replied looking at Airi “I think she's happy to be loved, she deserves to be loved”
Happy to be loved, Airi thought, had she been so foolish as not to notice any of this in Maimi, no, foolish was not the right word, more like selfish, to selfish to care for Maimi's problems, to selfish to care about how she truly felt, Nakky had seen it though and probably Airi should be happy for them but...
Why does it hurt so much?
“Airi?” Nakky spoke bringing the girl out of her conflicting thoughts “Are you all right?”
“I'm, I'm happy for you” Airi said quietly
“Is that all you can say?” Nakky asked, a sad little smile on her face “Even now is that all you feel?”
“Nakky I don't understand”
“I think deep down you do” Nakky replied letting out a sigh “It has all ways amazed me that you never realized it, perhaps it's because you didn't want to I don't know, maybe you were afraid of her feelings, what it meant for the two of you”
“Nakky, what are you telling me, who's feelings, what do you mean?”
“I think perhaps you do understand, perhaps you just don't wan to see it” Nakky replied
“See it? See what?”
“That Maimi likes you” Nakky replied, almost as a whisper “That she's liked you since pretty much the first day she met you, that even though you broke her heart by telling her you liked Miya she still loves you”
“Maimi, she-she likes me?” Airi asked in disbelief, a sickening feeling hit her stomach “I never knew, I never realized...”
“No you didn't” Nakky stated “Will you give Maimi to me though I wonder, will you give her to someone who will love her in return?”
“I-I......”
“Airi? Nakky? Good, I finally found you two I've been looking everywhere” The pair turned round to see Maimi standing in the door way of the room
Maimi soon saw the look on Airi's face and began to move forward towards the girl concerned “Airi what's the matter?” she asked gently
“I'm sorry Maimi, I'm so sorry” Airi said, tears forming in her eyes as she ran from the room
“Airi, Wait!” Maimi called out after the fleeing girl, she looked over questioningly to Nakky, who would not meet her gaze, before running after Airi.
Airi ran down the corridor, the tears blurring her vision. How cruel could you get? She thought to herself, all those years and she had not realized that Maimi liked her, that she must of put her leader through so much pain, how could she treat her friend like that?
It felt so much more than causing a friend pain though, Airi felt as though she had betrayed more than just the friendship she had with the girl, that there was something more that not only had really hurt Maimi but also herself a little as well, but what else was there?
Airi ran round a corner, still not really thinking where she was going and collided with a girl coming the other way sending them both toppling to the ground.
“Ow! Hey watch where you're going idiot!” the girl shouted before getting a proper look at who had run into her
“A-Airi?” the girl asked, spotting the tears on her face “Airi what's the matter?”
That voice, Airi though through her clouded mind, a voice she found so kind and caring, Miya's voice
Airi grabbed hold of her and wept, any control of her emotions went in the secure grip of Miya's arms as she cried on the girls shoulder
“Airi, what is it, why are you so upset” Miya tried to ask through the tears but Airi did not answer she just continued to cry on her shoulder. Unable to get the girl to speak, Miya began to stroke Airi's hair in an attempt to calm the younger girl down.
“I'm here Airi, I'm here” she said gently as Airi continued to cry.

Maimi kept running, she had seen Airi round the corner and she was sure the distance between the two of them was becoming shorter, she did not call out to the younger girl as she feared that it would only encourage Airi to keep running, no she would have to catch her “I have to catch her” she though to herself.
She stopped dead however once she had gone round the corner herself. Breathing heavily she looked on at the scene of Airi crying on Miya's shoulder, the Berryz girl gently stroking her hair with a bewildered look on her face.
Maimi stood there in shock. Airi was so upset, upset enough that it even hurt Mami to see her like that, she wanted to know what the problem was and why it had caused Airi to run from her.
Maimi eventually caught Miya's eye, and the girl, who was facing Maimi gave her a look, a look that all but said “Why is Airi so upset?”
“I wish I knew Miya, I wish I knew” Maimi though to herself as she shrugged her shoulders in response to Miya's questioning glare, her attention went back to Airi, she had stopped crying now, perhaps thanks to Miya's care “It should be me though” Maimi thought once again “I should be the one caring for her”
Composing herself she began to move towards Airi but was stopped by Airi shaking her head. Maimi fortunately knew Miya well enough to read the message in that little action; not here, not now, every bone in her body wanted to ignore Miya's advice, to run forward and hold the girl she liked but no, her head overruled her heart on this occasion she trusted Miya's advice besides there was another person she could ask about why Airi was so upset. Maimi nodded to Miya before having one last look at Airi, before heading back the way she came, this time with sadness in her heart.

Somehow Maimi knew that she would find Nakky in the same room that she had left her in. The girl in question was sitting down, looking at the floor as if it was the most interesting thing in the World. Maimi walked in and sat down opposite her friend.
“I know what your going to ask” Nakky said, not looking up from the floor
“Well” Maimi asked, a hint of anger becoming apparent in her voice
“We-we talked about you” Nakky replied nervously “About how I have feelings for you but that it isn't me that you like”
Maimi's eyes widened in shock “Nakky, please, don't tell me that you told Airi that I, that I....”
“That you like her, yes Maimi I did” Nakky interrupted the older girl, now looking right at her “I told Airi that you like her Maimi”
“Why Nakky? Why did you tell her?” Maimi said angrily “You knew I didn't want her to know, I wanted to be the one to tell her my feelings when I was ready but no, you go and tell her for me, you think I wanted that? How do you think that made Airi feel? How do you think I felt?”
“And what about My feelings?” Nakky snapped, loosing her temper also “How do you think I felt watching you chase after Airi who was too self centred to see your love? How do you think I felt all those times you talked to me about how you felt about Airi when I had feelings for you? What do you think it feels like knowing the girl you like will keep chasing after someone no matter what?
Nakky sighed, taking time to regain her composure, Maimi stood there tears falling down her checks, Nakky had told her that she had liked her but listening to what she had said she knew that she, just like Airi, had never seen the feelings of a girl close to them.
“What do you think it feels like” Nakky asked “Letting you go?”
“Let me go?” Maimi asked, wiping away her tears “Nakky what do you mean?”
“I told Airi” Nakky replied, ignoring Maimi's question “I told Airi because I believe that it had to be anyone but you, I think she needed to see what she had put you through, to perhaps realize not only your feelings for her, but her feelings for you”
Nakky stood up, looking down on the still seated Maimi “I'm sorry if I made you upset at telling her, I really am but I did what I though was best, for both of you. I want you to both get on with it you see, It's hard enough for me as it is”
“Hard for you?” Maimi asked, still trying to take in events, was Nakky telling her to go after Airi?
“I knew that I had very little chance with you, against Airi, remember when I confessed to you? I knew then that you would all ways love Airi, never me, we would be no more then friends, so what better for me to do as your friend than to get you and Airi together” Nakky explained, tears began to fall from her eyes “Don't wait to long though Maimi, it's hard enough as it is, waiting for you to be together” Nakky did not look at Maimi again as she went towards the door
“Nakky wait” Maimi called to the departing girl, she had to say something though she did not know what
“Please Maimi, let me go!” Nakky said softly through her tears
Maimi cried silently as she watched Nakky leave the room, she felt sick, not only had she failed Airi she had also failed Nakky, what made it worse was that she never seen the pain she had cause Nakky yet still the girl had done what she thought was best for her. Maimi shut her eyes “I promise I'll make things right Nakky, for Airi, and for you”
