Chapter 48 “Reina-chan… I still can’t believe you brought me
here of all places,” Eri said, stifling a giggle.
“I said don’t laugh!” Reina yelled, blushing from embarrassment. “And don’t say my name too loudly; it’s never good to stand out in public like this for me.”
The two girls were sitting in a booth, across from each other, in a fast food place. Reina was examining her burger in a very analytical way. Eri was chewing on a french fry, watching the oblivious yankii play with her food.
“But Reina-chan,” Eri giggled, “you said you were taking me to somewhere you’ve always wanted to go to. I thought it would be some place
amazing but… this is a fast food place!” Eri finally exploded and started to laugh hysterically.
Reina was acting very cute today in Eri’s eyes. She had said that there was something she really wanted to try: it was a double cheeseburger. She had tried to order by herself: Eri had to step in before Reina blew up on the cashier. She had tried to open a ketchup pack: it exploded in her hands and Eri had to get wet towels for her. So basically, Reina was in a very stressed and embarrassed mood while Eri was very entertained and happy.
“Don’t blame me,” Reina grumbled, staring at her burger. “I’ve been in show biz since I was 13 years old; I didn’t get to enjoy most of the social activities people do in Japan.” The yankii examined the burger a little more and took a bite out of it, then nodded her head slowly. “This is pretty good. A little fattening, but tasty.”
“I’m glad you like it,” Eri chuckled. It was so odd how she could laugh like this in front of
the Tanaka Reina, the one who had hurt her… Even weirder, laughing like this felt so natural. Eri already felt so close to Reina, and she wanted to get even closer.
“So,” Reina continued, chewing on her food, “your job today is to enlighten me.”
“Enlighten you?”
“Take me anywhere you want. Take me some place where people hang out; show me what the people of Japan do on their free time.”
“Why are you suddenly interested in this?” Eri questioned, raising an eyebrow. “I would’ve thought that you didn’t care about anything except… yourself.”
“I’m an entertainer, I have to be able to relate to civilians,” Reina said in a low voice.
And you. I want get to know you. “Just take me anywhere you usually hang around.”
“Then I know just the place!” Eri exclaimed, getting up from her seat. “Oh my gosh, I’ll show you my favorite hang-out spot! Come on, Reina-chan!”
“Keep your voice down!” Reina whispered loudly as Eri grabbed her wrist. “And I want to finish this burger— it tastes good— do you mind?”
“Take it with you, come on!”
With that, Eri dragged the singer out of the fast food place, giving Reina no chance at all to protest. They ran all the way to the shopping district. At some point in their run, Reina threw out the rest of her burger, which was a hard decision because it tasted absolutely heavenly to her. Right before entering a store that Eri pinpointed, Reina quickly checked her teeth in the shop window. Satisfied with her appearance, the yankii composed her face again into that of an annoyed expression and followed Eri into the shop.
Eri was already bouncing around store. She took a pink blouse and held it up against the idol.
“What do you think, Reina-chan?” the turtle beamed. “Isn’t it cute? You should try it on.”
“It’s not my style
at all,” Reina shot back, pushing the blouse away. Then, Eri started pouting a little. The yankii covered the bottom half of her face, trying to hide the blush in her cheeks, and sighed. “If you find something that I like, I’ll try it on.”
“Okay!” Eri answered, re-energized by Reina’s promise.
She immediately whirl-winded around the room like a hurricane and collected various outfits. The yankii chose a couple of them, walked into the dressing room stall, and closed the curtains.
“Did you put something on yet?” Eri asked, restless.
“I just got in here,” Reina replied, rolling her eyes. She grabbed whatever was first in the pile of clothes. It was a golden one-piece dress with a zipper on the back. The bottom was ruffled and there was a big bow right by the chest area.
The yankii almost wanted to toss it into the corner and not even touch it. But then she thought of the expectant turtle outside… with those shiny eyes… and that pout… Ugh. Okay, that did it.
So the idol stripped down quickly and put the dress on. But she couldn’t reach the zipper in the back. She let out a groan of frustration.
“Reina-chan, is something wrong?” Eri voice came from the other side of the curtain.
“It’s nothing… just the zipper,” Reina grumbled back.
“Oh, I can help.”
Before Reina could say otherwise, Eri helped herself into the small space in the dressing stall. Reina immediately looked down at the floor as she felt her cheeks heating up.
But there was absolutely no change in Eri’s facial expression. She was a fashion designer; she had seen a lot of naked bodies, much less a bare back. She had already seen Ai in her undergarments as well, while she was helping her with her costume. Of course, she hadn’t seen Reina in that state, for the yankii always insisted she would put on her own clothes.
“Wow, you’re back is really smooth, Reina-chan,” Eri commented, completely oblivious to Reina’s nervousness. “I wish my back was smooth like that.”
“
Can she hear herself talking right now?” Reina thought. “
It sounds almost like sex-talk! Or is that just me going psychotic?”
The turtle swiftly pulled the dress zipper up and looked at the yankii’s full body through the mirror.
“You look so cute in it!” Eri exclaimed happily. “You
definitely have to get this, Reina-chan.”
“It’s not my style,” Reina contradicted, biting her lips. “It’s too… frilly… and girly.”
“But it really suits you, though,” Eri sighed. “Well, I guess I can’t tell you what to buy and what not to buy. Why don’t you try the other ones too? I’ll be right outside.”
Then, Eri pulled down Reina’s dress zipper swiftly and walked out, not hearing the idol’s sudden gasp from her action. Reina held herself for a moment, and then straightened up. She took off the dress and held it up to herself again. Eri’s smile, her hopes, her laughter popped into her mind.
“
Have I already gotten this helpless?” Reina thought. “
I… really do like her, don’t I?”
Without another thought, the yankii put on her original clothes and walked out of the stall. Eri looked at her with wide-eyes.
“I’ll buy this dress,” Reina said in a low voice, holding up the golden frilly dress. “So can we leave?”
“Yes!” Eri exclaimed, practically bouncing in place.
The rest of the day basically went the same way. Eri dragged Reina all around the shopping district, forcing her into the dressing rooms. Reina always rolled her eyes or groaned at Eri’s overreaction to every cute outfit she found. But in truth, she had smiled a couple times today, and the turtle had caught her doing so. In the end, Reina ended buying only the first dress they found. But Eri still seemed satisfied by her hunt of the day so Reina also breathed a sigh of relief.
It was already around ten o’clock when the silver sports car pulled in front of Eri and Risa’s home. Reina walked with Eri all the way to the door. The turtle turned and smiled.
“I had a lot of fun today, Reina-chan,” she said. “Thanks. We should hang out like this more often.”
“Uh-huh…” Reina mumbled.
“Well, I’ll see you next time.”
“W-wait a minute!”
Before the turtle could go inside the house, Reina grabbed her wrist and turned her around to face her. Eri’s eyes widened.
“What is it?”
Reina gritted her teeth, then bit down on her lips. “
You can do this, Reina. Focus. It doesn’t matter if she has a girlfriend; the important thing is letting her know how you feel.”
“Reina-chan?”
“Listen… Eri…” Reina started. “I’ve known you for a couple months now. Um, we didn’t get off to a very nice start… I guess that’s my fault. But, um, you helped me get over my past… and you taught me to move on and look to the future. I’m really, uh, thankful for that. And, um… if you didn’t teach me that… I don’t know where I’d be at this moment. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I feel like you’re a necessity to my life now. So, uh…”
“You can just say what you need to say, Reina-chan,” Eri whispered.
“I like you!” Reina blurted out, looking straight into the older girl’s eyes. She had gained a little more backbone now. “No, I love you. I know you probably don’t feel the same way towards me, but I still needed to say it. I don’t expect you to return the same feelings… but I just wanted you to know that there’s someone named Tanaka Reina in this world who is in love with you.”
The yankii held her determined expression as she looked at the turtle’s shocked face.
I’ve done it. Just please, don’t let me lose her… Suddenly, Eri jumped toward Reina and wrapped her arms around her neck, taking her into a hug. Reina unconsciously wrapped her arms around Eri’s waist as well, although her expression was still that of confusion.
“I love you too,” Eri whispered in her ears.
Reina pushed the older girl away to look at her face with wide eyes.
“What?!” Reina yelled. “But… but I hurt you!”
“It’s in the past.”
“I’m always cruel to you!”
“You never mean it.”
“But… you have a girlfriend!”
“No, I don’t.”
Reina’s chin dropped open with a pop. She was so confused; she had to organize all these facts flying towards her.
“But I hurt you like that and you cried so much and I’m always so cold and you had a girlfriend that day and she was my fan and you were worried but if you don’t have a girlfriend and I like you and you like me back and we have mutual feelings and does that mean—”
Reina never finished her sentence because of Eri’s sudden attack on her mouth. The older girl’s lips moved slowly, molding itself onto Reina’s glossy lips. It was a soft, warm, mild, yet sweet kiss. Eri soon backed away and inch and smiled at Reina’s surprised face.
“You talk too much,” she whispered. “You love me and I love you. So we’re officially together now… right?”
“… Damn it!”
Muttering a curse under her breath, Reina immediately placed her mouth back on to Eri’s lips, unable to control her want. This kiss was rougher; Reina’s lips continuously moved, trying to find some way into Eri’s mouth. Soon, the turtle’s lips parted, and the yankii seized the chance to stick her tongue in. Their tongues twirled around each others while Reina tried to stay in control. Eri was the one to finally look away to the side, gasping for air.
“Stop… stop…” she huffed. “I can’t… I can’t breathe…”
“I’m so sorry!” Reina apologized desperately. “I… I took it too far, I’m sorry!”
Big mistake, Reina! “No, it’s fine,” Eri gasped. “I’m just… not use to it yet. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t… like it.”
Eri gave a sweet smile to the idol. Reina stared back at the turtle for a while, then gave a smile of relief. She embraced her tightly.
“Thank you…” Reina whispered. “Thank you so much! I promise, I’ll treat you right. I won’t mess up this time. Not with you. Not ever again.”
“Correction: I won’t
let you mess up,” Eri giggled. “Because I think I like you just as much as you like me.”
Just like that, the two girls smiled and held on to each other for a little longer. Reina kept her arms tightly locked around the waist of her new girlfriend.
