Chapter 53 “You girls all ready?” Tsunku asked. Both High-Queen members gave a thumbs-up from the recording booth.
Risa, being the workaholic that she was, had managed to finish the instrumental within five days time when she had two weeks to work on it. She could’ve finished it in two days but Ai made sure daily that the bean was getting enough food, sleep, and air. So by the third day, it wasn’t so strange that Ai was in Risa’s kitchen making breakfast while Eri left early with Reina.
Today was the day High-Queen would start recording “Cinderella Complex”. After the recording session, the two idols would immediately start learning the choreography that their dance trainer had come up with.
“Alright,” Risa said. “Here we go!”
The loud boom of the music burst through the recording studio. Eri stood next to her friend, bobbing her head up and down to the beat. Tsunku crossed his arm and closed his eyes, listening seriously. Risa turned on the switches for Ai and Reina’s mic.
Ai started to sing first as Reina overlapped her voice with a small rap part. After one verse, the two girls switched parts. Then, Ai’s main vocal flowed into the room, backed up with a pre-inserted harmony part. She looked up and met eyes with her composer, taking the bean by surprise.

She’s looking at me with those eyes…” Risa thought. “
They’re dark and serious… I want to look away but I can’t!”
Reina’s voice followed up right after the leader’s.

Wow, she’s so serious when she sings…” Eri thought. “
I guess that’s another part that attracts me to her… she takes important things seriously…”
The two girls started to sing the pre-chorus back and forth.

Finally, both High-Queen members started to sing the chorus together. Reina looked up, met her girlfriend’s eyes, and smirked.

Is she teasing me?” Eri thought, blushing. “
Just because I’m not ready for that yet… she’s implying that she’s waiting for me.”
Ai finally managed to make eye contact with Risa. But the leader did not smile. Her face was completely serious… but not expressionless. Ai’s facial features distorted as she made an expression of pain and sadness.

Why is she looking at me like that?” Risa thought, slightly panicking. “
Why is she making that face? I don’t want her to be sad… what can I do?”
High-Queen continued to sing through the whole song, until they ended with another sequence of “Na na na”s and “Give me love”s.
During the entire recording, Ai didn’t take her eyes off of Risa. The bean constantly blushed and tried to turn away, but she always somehow looked up again, only to meet the leader’s dark eyes. Then she would try to look away again, and the cycle continued.

What is she trying to tell me?” Risa thought. “
I’ve never seen her expression so… desperate. Ai’s not usually like that… what can I do?”
On the other hand, Reina had met Eri’s eyes whenever she had a solo line, and had kept on smirking. Whenever the yankii sang a line, such as “Even though I believe, where are you? Midnight will come and go”, she sang to her girlfriend with over exaggerated facial expressions. Eri would glare and puff up her cheeks.
“She’s definitely making fun of me,” Eri thought angrily. “She just sang through the entire song with sarcasm!”
“That was pretty good, girls,” Tsunku said, opening his eyes. “Take five, then get a couple more trials in.”
As Tsunku left the studio while dialing on his cell phone, Ai and Reina shifted out of the recording booth. Reina had a smug smile on.
“Hey baby,” the yankii greeted, opening her arms to hug her girlfriend. But Eri pushed her away.
“Don’t ‘hey baby’ me,” Eri growled. “You said you would wait; you don’t have to make fun of me like that.”
“What did I do?” Reina gasped, opening her eyes wide with obvious sarcasm. “I would never do anything to hurt you, Eri.”
“Oh, shut it,” Eri grumbled, turning her back to the yankii. She crossed her arms and blew up her cheeks. “I know you’re in… a rush, but you didn’t have to make me feel guilty like that.”
“Okay, okay,” Reina laughed. She wrapped her arms around the turtle’s waist. “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to make you feel guilty or anything. I was just teasing so don’t think too much about it. Please forgive me?”
“… Maybe,” Eri said. “Will you take me out to dinner tonight?”
“Anywhere you want,” Reina answered.
“You’re forgiven,” Eri grinned. She turned around and hugged her girlfriend back.
The truth was, Eri was glad that Reina teased her like that. It meant that she was getting more comfortable with her. The yankii was starting to break out of her hard shell. Reina herself was surprised that she could smile and joke around like this again, in front of Eri.
Meanwhile, Ai had plopped down on the couch while grabbing a water bottle from the side table. As she took a drink, Risa took slow baby-steps towards the leader and stood in front of her.
“Ai,” the younger girl started hesitantly, “that was, um, a good session.”
“Arigatou,” Ai answered, smiling. “I see you just couldn’t take your eyes off me.”
“What?” Risa shrilled. “That’s not true.” She could feel her cheeks starting to get warmer.
“Yes, you were.”
“No, I wasn’t!”
Then, Ai suddenly grabbed Risa’s arms and pulled her down towards the couch until their faces were only a centimeter apart.
“Yes, you were,” Ai whispered, smiling. “I must’ve been pretty convincing; were you seduced by me?”
“Y-you wish!” Risa yelled, pulling away from the singer.
“You’re right; I
do wish. I wonder how I can seduce you better…” The leader observed the younger girl’s eyes pop out in shock, and laughed. “Just kidding. You don’t need to be so surprised.”
“Oh… right… kidding… ha-ha…” Risa said weakly.
At that moment, the door of the studio burst open and Tsunku strutted in.
“Okay girls,” the producer announced. “That was five minutes. Back to work!”
