Chapter 40 “You’re being weird these days.”
“Not as weird as you.”
The two High-Queen members were sitting at opposite ends of the white couch in their living room, supposedly watching TV. Reina shot a look towards her leader.
“You lied to Gaki about something,” she accused.
“How do you know?” Ai questioned.
“Well, Eri felt the need to text me and go on about her life story…” the yankii rolled her eyes. “And she told me her friend’s been upset since talking to you. What’d you do? It’s probably about your… interaction with her at the party.”
The leader sighed. “You’re smart, Reina, I give you that.”
“What did you do?” the yankii repeated.
“I took a stance that I didn’t remember anything,” Ai replied calmly.
“Why?”
“… It was a mistake.”
“You don’t make mistakes.”
“Hey, I may be a competent leader,” Ai laughed, “but I’m still human. But it was a very careless mistake on my part. I didn’t mean to kiss her back, I just… When she kissed me, something took over. When I realized what I was doing, I had already crossed the line. Big mistake.”
“But… if it was something that impulsive…”
“Yes, I have quite a strong affection for her,” Ai admitted. “But she’s very confused right now, I can tell. I want to give her the time she needs to think about what I mean to her. She can go at her own pace; I can wait.”
The leader turned to look at the yankii and smiled. Reina stared for a while.
“Why would you wait? Just go for it and be done with it,” the younger girl said.
“You wouldn’t do that either,” Ai accused. “Not anymore.”
“Yes, I would,” Reina argued.
“Then why haven’t you touched Eri yet?” Ai shot back. She smirked as Reina’s face turned into a deep scowl.
“What the hell are you talking about?” the yankii snarled.
“Reina, it’s very obvious what’s going on,” Ai said, rolling her eyes. “It’s just the two protagonists who don’t get it.”
“Can’t you just speak regular human language for once?” Reina growled.
“You like Eri,” Ai explained. “I don’t know how she feels about you, but you
really like her.”
“I do
not,” the yankii denied. She felt her cheeks getting hotter; was it anger?
“Yes, you
do,” Ai contradicted, smiling. “You don’t realize it but you
do feel that way. So tell me, how did it feel when she was watching you dance?”
“Annoyed,” Reina grumbled, crossing her arms and glaring at her leader.
“Paranoia,” Ai concluded. “You get self-conscious when she’s watching you. And how did it feel when she showed concern for you?”
“…Annoyed,” Reina answered again.
“Embarrassment,” Ai explained. “You feel humiliation when you make a mistake in front of her. And how did it feel when she treated your wound?”
“…Annoyed…”
“Nervousness,” Ai decided. “You feel anxious when she touches you.”
“I never knew there were so many types of ‘annoyed’, Ai,” Reina said through her teeth.
“You just have limited vocabulary and common sense to know your own feelings,” Ai said with a smug smile. “So I took the liberty of translating. Admit it; I’m right.”
“… Okay, fine!” Reina yelled, sighing. “Maybe… maybe I’m more fond her then I thought I was. But it’s not like I can
do anything about it… after how I treated her.”
“Can’t you see that she’s trying her best to get closer to you?” Ai said. “I don’t know if it’s affections or just kindness on her account, but she really is trying. You have to open up more.”
“She has a girlfriend,” Reina mumbled.
“
So she does have some sort of will to ask her out,” Ai thought, smiling. “Just because there’s a goalie, doesn’t mean you can’t get a goal in.”
“What am I supposed to do?” Reina demanded. “I… I can’t… I’m not…”
“Take it slow for now,” Ai advised. “But you have to be nicer to her. Open up to her until it becomes natural. That’s your first step. Understand?”
“…Will she… be happier… if I do that?” Reina questioned in a low voice.
“Yes,” Ai laughed. “I think she’ll be very happy.”
