Call of Duty : Black Ops
« on: September 02, 2010, 04:34:07 PM »

Quote
Call of Duty: Black Ops (also known as Black Ops) is the seventh main installment of the Call of Duty series. It is currently being developed by Treyarch. The confirmation of the game's development was leaked by David Kim, a senior animator at Treyarch, in May 2009. Black Ops is said to be set in various locations, including Vietnam and Cuba, and judging from weaponry and dates given in the trailer, it is set between 1960 and 2010. It is planned to be released on November 9, 2010. Treyarch has stated that Black Ops will be much grittier than Modern Warfare 2 and that the differences between World at War and Black Ops will be as significant as the differences between Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The trailer released on May 18, 2010 indicated that the game will be significantly more story-oriented and will focus on military cover-ups during the Cold War. Treyarch has also said that Black Ops will feature considerably more stealth than any previous entries in the Call of Duty series.

You don't need me to tell you, but Call of Duty is kind of a big deal right now. Modern Warfare 2 is the most popular online shooter by far, still #1 in terms of popularity after 9 months. Even Call of Duty 4 and World At War are still up there in popularity. And if it's anything to go by, Black Ops is set to smash Modern Warfare 2's records. Not even Halo Reach or the decent looking Medal Of Honour could even hope to compete I predict. Make of it what you will but Modern Warfare 2 is a decent shooter online let down by some unbalanced weapons, and class setups that people exploit to ruin games.

So now it's Treyarch's turn. Long in the shadow of Infinity Ward, it's their opportunity to win back the cynics and recruit players all over again. It's been 2 years in development for them trying to get everything as good as it can be for release. First off, the single player side of things:

Quote
The player assumes the role of various characters during the single-player campaign, changing perspectives throughout the story. The playable characters are special forces operatives conducting black operations behind enemy lines. In this way, the player's characters will have their own traits such as voices and shadows.

Each mission features a series of objectives that are displayed on the head up display, which marks the direction and distance towards and from such objectives. The player is accompanied by friendly troops who cannot be issued orders.

Although primarily a first-person shooter, the player will get to pilot a Hind helicopter and guide friendly troops from an SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft.

The campaign is filled with scripted cinematic moments. One of them is a bullet time effect during the "Victor Charlie" level, activated when the player fires toward the last enemy of a Viet Cong squad.

And for multiplayer they had a full reveal on all of the details last night, many of which is too long to list here, but can be found here. Most interestingly is the new addition of in game currency, which is now used to buy your killstreaks, weapons, camo for your character (which is also new), and new game modes that gamble this money:

I'm disappointed there's no beta though. Not even from the point that I want to play it, but a beta would go a long way to fix some problems or identify exploits that could be worked out before release. I can only imagine Activision don't want one out because it worked so well last time round for MW2. No beta just kept they hype train going and going until people just had to buy it on day one. Can't blame them really. But I am disappointed to hear that there are things from MW2 that haven't been sorted. Last Stand isn't removed for example. Worst of all, tactical insertions remain. I hate boosters in MW2, nobody likes them, yet it's still going on. And I guess I've been so jaded with MW2 that I'm already expecting people to exploit glitches or hacked lobbies. In fact the desire for hacked lobbies will be even greater because of money.

But on the plus side, there's no Martyrdom, no Commando, no One Man Army, no Danger Close, so kudos to them. Also Juggernaut and Stopping Power is taken away so I guess it removes any complaints of guns being too overpowered (though it won't stop people)

But yeh, Call of Duty. You get what you pay for. Is it doing anything groundbreaking or innovative? Not especially, there's a formula, it works, and you can expect another game released same time next year. Doesn't mean you can't have fun with it right?

FFA is easily my strongest game mode for some reason, so I wonder just how well I'll do in Wager Matches.

Hmmmm, a JPH!P emblem on the gun maybe? That would be pretty sweet :D

You one of those ones who's going to waste their money on the special edition of Black Ops that comes with the RC car? Well how would you really like to waste your money?! For a measly, £60 how about some COD sunglasses?

Oh dear. In more meaningful news, Treyarch are supposedly stating that it will be impossible to quick scope in Black Ops multiplayer. Which in one end of the scale, I'm kind of glad, cause 9 times out of 10 the quickscopers are on my team, doing their best to get clips for a montage and end up going insanely negative and losing objective based game types. On the other side, I know the quickscopers I play against do tend to struggle trying to line up a perfect shot, which makes it easy for them to kill with an assault rifle.

In single player, the dude you play as is supposedly voiced by Hollywood actor, Sam Worthington. You know, the dude from Avatar. Also making an appearance are Gary Oldman, Ed Harris and Ice Cube.

It's arriving next week. The hype train has already started with this rather cool looking trailer

And confirmation that in zombies mode you play as...JFK? Nixon? McNamura? Castro?

JFK sounds more like Mayor Quimby

^ Yeh man. There's gonna be some serious whoring of the franchise out in the next few years. A new game by Treyarch, a different studio working on Modern Warfare 3 supposedly , an MMO COD and a 3rd person action game, or as Vinny from Giant Bomb perfectly put it, "God of Warfare"

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — The 2011 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition will arrive in U.S. showrooms next month to coincide with the November 9 release of the Xbox 360 video game of the same name. Jeep said the limited-edition model will start at $30,625 for the two-door model and $33,500 for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited version. Prices include a $750 destination charge.

The special model is spun off the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model and features Call of Duty: Black Ops graphics on the roof and front quarter panels, along with standard 32-inch off-road tires, front and rear locking differentials and a two-speed transfer case.

The Jeep links to the highly anticipated first-person shooter video game that puts the player in the role of a foot soldier during the Cold War. "Black Ops" usually refers to covert military operations conducted behind enemy lines. The player has access to various firearms and explosives, as well as a "dismemberment" feature.

"We are able to expose the Jeep brand to an entirely new group of consumers," said Mike Manley, president and CEO of Jeep Brand, in a statement explaining the limited-edition Wrangler.

Jeep also said the 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models get a new interior with a redesigned instrument panel and new storage areas. Sahara models get a new body-color hard top.

After seeing the picture above on the internet, I showed it to a friend of mine that said "It should have been Roger from Lethal Weapon" !
So we thought, yeah, that would be awesome, so the 2nd picture was born.
I'm a little proud of it, I might say! (About 10 minutes of photoshop)

So anyone playing? My thoughts? Can't really comment on single player as I've only done two missions, but it seems solid enough. Zombies I've honestly spent the least amount of time with. It's fun, just seems like a bit of a distraction from the actual meat of the game.

The multiplayer. Played about 5 hours now, rank 27 or so. It's absolutely crazy how much you can customise your character. Attachments, camo, perks and so much more. It's pretty commendable. The sheer number of challenges will keep me going and the contracts are a neat addition too. The stat tracking is really cool too, a huge effort there which I also appreciate. I wanted to make a JPH!P emblem for my playercard and to put on my gun, but it seems they only give you basic shapes to use. There are letter shapes in the game, but only the vowels. I guess the developers didn't want players to make emblems with expletives which I can imagine would be very hard to moderate. So at the moment, my emblem is a JPH!P heart, but with a skull in it XD

It's only been 4 days in, there's probably a lot of time yet to find overpowered classes or exploits, but right now it's very balanced online. Removing stopping power and juggernaut helps a lot. Haven't seen that many campers either, apart from the Hardcore playlists, and the developers weren't kidding when they said they made quickscoping impossible now. Enemies seem to take more bullets before they get killed and guns seem to have more recoil behind them. Liking the wager matches too. Sticks and stones I'm not so fussed with (mainly because I'm awful with the crossbow XD), but the rest are good fun. Checked my stats at the end of yesterday and I was ranked 7349th in the world in Domination, which, considering of hundreds of thousands of players in the world, I thought wasn't too shabby :twothumbs: Wait til I get stuck into Free For All XD

So very positive about Black Ops right now, all seems to be going well. If you're looking for the best setup, I suggest sticking with the Enfield assault rifle with a Red Dot sight, at least until you unlock the Galil with the suppressor. That thing's a freaking beast :)

Just finished my last Free For All game there, on top, with a 7.70 K/D ratio. :fap The AUG assault rifle is a good gun to use. And the masterkey i.e. the under barrell shotgun attachment for assault rifles, is much better here in Black Ops. I was owning people with it in the last game. I can see myself use it a lot actually based off that.

Also really wanted to save this kill I made earlier. Was up on the 2nd floor of a building, and rushed a guy from behind. Picked up his sniper rifle where I quickly zoomed in on a guy shooting me from across the map, and got a head shot off it. It was a droolworthy kill, but did Theater mode decide to save that match? Noooo.

My brother got this a little while ago. I've only played multi-player since I don't like the game that much. It's nice having everything unlocked, but kinda sucks not being able to change the rules for matches. It's not too big of a deal since when still have fun matches.

I plan on getting it when the price falls a bit or ask for it for Xmas. I liked the previous game but not enough to spend £40 on this one yet.

I think I figured out what type of emblem I'm gonna make. As I have no creativity whatsoever, I think I'll try to match the design of one of the pins from The World Ends With You. Look cool and I'd say they could be easy enough to replicate (some of them). And if you don't know what they look like, well now you do. Wish me luck XD

Also, I would encourage anyone playing to take a look at a semi-montage clip I made after a match in FFA on Firing Range. It might not be the best thing you'll ever see, but as the game winning killcam and what I had to do to get it, I thought it was pretty fucking awesome :D

I really like the presentation of the game, and the story to go with it. The mission concepts themselves are decent, and the graphics are quite nice, though even with the patch, I suffer terrible slowdown at times.

I don't really dig the linear missions, or awkward gameplay at times. It still suffers from the BANZAI and GRENADE like the previous games. While getting rocked like that may be a tad more realistic, it's still mildly annoying when I can shake off multiple bullet wounds after ducking behind a barrel.

And to be fair, I've only played SP so far. I liked the MP in MW2, so I'd like to give it a go here too.
