Chapter 59 “A school festival?” Reina repeated her girlfriend’s words, biting down on the rusk in her hand. “That sounds fun. Are kids from other schools allowed to go?”
Eri reached forward for another rusk from the big bowl on the coffee table. She and her lover, along with their yankii friends, were all sitting around in the living room. Reina and Eri were snuggled close to each other on the large soft while Junjun had half-forcibly placed the bunny on her lap; Aika and Linlin were on the floor to get within the closest radius of the rusk bowl as possible. For once, Junjun had intruded upon the kitten’s home with something in compensation, which was a bag of rusk that was pretty popular these days. Part of the reason the panda bought this was also to give her girlfriend a taste of what “common” dessert was like; after that delicious feast that Sayumi had presented to her friends the day before, the yankiis had felt the need to somehow return the favor, no matter how little.
“Yeah, it’s opened to all,” Eri answered the kitten. “You should all come by.”
“Awesome, I love school festivals!” Junjun grinned. “Why isn’t our school doing something like that?”
“If you recall, genius, we did have them annually until this year,” Reina growled at her friend, “because last year, you broken down almost every single booth. So the headmaster cancelled all school events, remember?”
“Hey, I had to fight back somehow,” the yankii leader said in her defense.
“What happened?” the bunny asked with a curious face.
“Our enemy gang decided to crash the festival to get back at Jun-senpai for beating down their leader,” Aika smirked. “We sure showed them, though.”
“Oh, I remember that!” Linlin exclaimed. “That was fun.”
“Yeah, your entertainment at the cost of everyone else’s recreation,” Reina shot at her underclassmen. “If you guys are coming to Eri’s festival, you have to promise not to do such a thing.”
“Yeah, we promise,” Junjun grinned. “I’m bringing lots of friends, though. Usa-chan, you’re going to come along too, right?”
Sayumi didn’t answer. She was staring intently at the corner of the coffee table, her eyes slightly glazed over. Reina and raised an eyebrow as Junjun waved her hand in front of the bunny’s face.
“Oi! Usa-chan!”
“Huh? Huh?” Sayumi blinked and quickly looked around, eventually spotting all the concerned expressions around her.
“I asked you if you wanted to go to the school festival at Kame-chan’s school,” Junjun restated. “You’ve been homeshooled so far, so this will be your first right? It’ll be fun.”
“Um… yeah, yeah, I want to go… I’ll go…” Sayumi mumbled.
“Are you okay, Michishige-san?” Eri asked, her face showing worry. “You seem kind of out of it right now…”
“Yes, I’m fine,” the bunny answered, forcing a smile. “I was… just thinking about things.”
“What were you thinking of?” Junjun asked. Sayumi turned her head and angled it so that she could meet eyes with her lover. The yankii leader’s smile was perfectly structured, as though it had been practiced. Sayumi quickly looked away, not wanting to remember the rejection she had experienced the day before.
“Nothing,” she mumbled. “I was just spacing out.”
“Well then, if Usa-chan is okay,” Junjun said quickly, refusing to let the silence sink in, “Let’s move on. Aika, I think this festival calls for another gang reunion.”
“Already on it,” the kouhai grinned, saluting her leader. “Linlin, would you like to do the honors?”
“Got it,” the younger panda said, whipping out her cell phone. Her fingers started to tap over the keypad at the speed of light before she quickly shut it and put it away. “Forwarded a message to everyone on the contact list.”
“Whatever it is you’re doing, Kame-chan, we’ll make sure your class gets business,” Junjun grinned, giving a thumbs-up.
“Good, because it’s a competition between the classes to see who makes the most profit,” Eri smiled.
“Exactly what is your class doing?” Reina asked, crunching down on another rusk.
“Ah… um… we’re putting on a play,” Eri answered, trying to remain calm.
“That’s cool,” the kitten nodded. “What play?”
“Sleeping Beauty.”
“Kawaii~” Sayumi commented, beaming. “It sounds like so much fun!”
“Are you in it too?” Reina questioned, meeting eyes with her lover, who was getting pretty nervous now.
“Um… yeah, I am…”
Oh boy, here it comes… “What part are you playing?”
“… The princess,” Eri mumbled.
Junjun burst out laughing as the rest of the room fell silent. Reina blinked a couple times before raising an eyebrow at the panda. Aika and Linlin started to snicker to themselves, as though they had just gotten the joke that their leader was laughing over. Sayumi looked back and forth from the younger yankiis to her girlfriend, confused.
“What’s… so funny?” Eri asked.
“Well, isn’t it ironic?” Junjun said, grinning. “How you and Reina originally got together because you were mistaken as a boy… and now you’re going to be a princess? With dresses and all that?” The girl fell into a fit of laughter once more as Aika and Linlin freely released their amusement as well.
“Well… I think it’s really cute,” Sayumi said quietly, smiling at the turtle. “Fairy tales never grow old, with the magic and the forest and the true love’s kiss…”
“True love’s kiss.” Reina whipped her head around to look at Eri, who was obviously trying to avoid eye contact. The kitten cleared her throat as her lips formed a tight smile. “… Eri? … Are you going to be kissing someone?”
“… Uh… I, uh…” The turtle mumbled incoherently, staring at the floor.
“… Who is it,” Reina said stiffly, not even phrasing it as a question, since it was more of a demand to know.
“You know, there’s actually a funny story about that,” Eri said suddenly, laughing nervously. “You see, none of the boys in my class wanted to be in the cast; they wanted to do backstage work, so… we have an all-female cast.”
“Who is it.”
“It’s like Takarazuka,” Sayumi said, fully absorbed in the idea now.
“Exactly correct,” Eri grinned.
“Who is it.”
“Is there singing, too?” Aika asked.
“Nope, no singing,” Eri answered.
“Who is it.”
“What’s Takarazuka?” Linlin asked.
“It’s an all-female theatre troupe,” Eri explained.
“KAMEI ERI, WHO THE HELL IS IT?” Reina yelled, finally cracking from the turtle’s obvious attempt to avoid her question. Sayumi along with the two younger girls slightly jumped in shock at the sudden loud outburst. Junjun smirked a little, simply entertained by this minor couple fight. Eri swallowed hard as she met her girlfriend’s angry eyes.
“It’s… uh… Risa-chan.”
Eri squeaked as quietly as possible while she nervously assessed Reina’s reaction. She was braced for the worst, expecting some sort of angry outburst at this frustrating situation. However, what Eri saw on the kitten’s face was something she had not predicted. Reina’s face did not show fury, but something quite far from it. She was…
sad. She stared down at her hands as she froze in place, as though in deep thought. She bit down on her lips a little, as though she was conflicted, while her eyes revealed sorrow. It almost seemed as though she was deciding whether or not to scold her girlfriend, but there was no decision to be made. Her true feeling was not anger… it was loneliness.
“Reina…?” Eri asked quietly. She felt that it was nice not having her girlfriend get furious with her, but the fact that she was acting differently from what was expected ironically scared the turtle even more.
“… Can I be honest with you?” the kitten asked quietly, finally looking up to gaze into Eri’s deep, concerned eyes.
“Of course you can,” the turtle answered back with the same low volume, if not lower. “I want you to be.”
“Then… I don’t like it.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t like it,” Reina repeated, curling up into a ball to hold herself together. “I don’t like that you’re going to be kissing Gaki-san. Even if it’s just acting. I should be the only one. I don’t like it.”
Eri blinked a couple times in surprise. She had definitely expected the kitten to be against this idea, but she hadn’t expected her to be so calm in dealing with it. But when she looked intently into Reina’s eyes, she could understand. Reina didn’t want to have a fight with Eri again; last time was the first and that was enough. She knew that she had to work hard to suppress her too-spontaneous character, especially when she knew this wasn’t Eri’s fault. And the turtle appreciated that.
“Reina—” Eri stopped short as she felt a couple pairs of eyes staring at her like shooting daggers. She glared at the four girls watching the scene intently and cleared her throat. “Do you guys mind?”
“… Well, gang,” Junjun sighed, grinning. “I guess it’s time for us to leave. How does a movie at my house sound?”
“Let’s stop by the video shop, then!” Aika said, getting on her feet while pulling Linlin up as well.
“And some snacks at the convenience store?” Linlin grinned.
“You up for it, Usa-chan?” Junjun asked the girl on her lap.
“Um… yeah, sure,” Sayumi mumbled back. Was she the only one who felt awkward right now? Well, it was better than going home where she would be all alone…
“Enjoy the rusk, Reina,” Junjun saluted to the ex-yankii, pulling the bunny off her lap to stand up. “See you around, Kame-chan.”
Hastily, the yankii girls moved out of the living room as they gathered their school bags on the way. After a couple seconds, Eri could hear the front door close. She assumed that Junjun probably locked it with the spare key, since there was the sound of the lock turning as well. Then, there was silence in the large house as Eri looked at her lover apologetically while Reina just leaned her head on one of the sofa cushions shoved in by her neck and shoulder.
“Reina, I know you’re upset,” Eri comforted in the most soothing voice she could manage. “But… if it helps… we’re not really going to kiss. It’s just a light peck, right here.” She raised her index finger to point to the place right by the corner of her lips. “It’s not a real kiss.”
“I still don’t like it,” Reina admitted, sighing. “I mean, I’m not going to stop you from doing it; it’s your school festival. But, I mean… I’m just trying to be honest, I guess…”
“I’m glad you are,” Eri smiled warmly, running her hand over the kitten’s hair. “I want you to know that there is actually nothing to be worried about. You know me and Risa-chan; we’re not like that. And you know I like kissing you the most.”
“I could say the same thing,” Reina murmured, smiling. “And speaking of kissing…”
The kitten scooted forward a little until she naturally ended up on Eri’s lap. Wrapping her arms around the turtle’s neck, she kissed the soft lips that she had longed for all day. Eri was surprised to see Reina getting into the kiss very quickly; she was obviously trying to make sure her claim on the turtle’s love was still valid. The kitten was very determined; after this kiss, Eri would not even dream of being with someone else… or at least, she hoped.
A quiet moan sounded from Eri’s throat as she responded to her lover’s advances easily. Soon enough, they were fighting for dominance, swirling their tongues around each other’s to see who would get short of breath first. But before this battle could reach its peack, Reina broke away and leaned her forehead against Eri’s shoulder instead, hiding her face.
“Reina?” the turtle asked, slightly alarmed. “What’s wrong?”
“Mm… nothing…” she mumbled. “Just… it’s just that it’s only two days away.”
Then, it hit her. It came back to Eri that one of Reina’s biggest obstacles was about to come soon; a face-off with her father. It was odd enough that he was coming for a visit, but not knowing the reason was even scarier. And Eri could feel that fear from her girlfriend’s nervous heartbeat.
“It’s okay, love,” Eri murmured softly, wrapping her arms protectively around the kitten. “I’ll be right here with you. Anytime you need me, I’m right here.”
“Does that mean you’ll stay with me tonight too?” Reina asked, lifting her head to gaze into Eri’s eyes. “Hold me…?”
“I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Eri smiled. Well, the truth was that she did want it some other way, if they were going to lie down in bed together… but she was willing to wait. Right now, a crisis was brewing for Reina. And during these nervous times, Eri didn’t mind restricting herself to just merely embracing the kitten as they slept together, to help her feel safe. Reina’s being was always first on the list.
“Two days…” Reina mumbled, sighing shakily. Her hands fumbled around by themselves until they found Eri’s two perfect hands. She grasped them, as though she felt the need to stablilize herself. “Promise me you won’t leave me. Ever.”
Eri smiled as she leaned in closer to get only an inch away from Reina’s beautiful face, forcing her to make eye contact. She then softly kissed her lover’s trembling lips, transferring her own warmth to her mouth. Then, she quietly whispered a pledge into the kiss.
“I promise.”
