Chapter 38 Why does this damn elevator never work? Kuso! Reina slammed her fist against the metal door of the elevator before turning around and dashing up the stairs. Once again, she had gotten tired of waiting for the elevator after about five seconds and took her anger out on it instead. She would’ve started to kick it too, just because she was restless, but there were more urgent matters to deal with. There was someone she needed to see
right now. That took precedence over everything else.
For some reason, the stairs seemed even steeper than last time and longer too. But Reina didn’t care. She knew that if she kept on climbing and climbing, she would eventually reach the correct floor. The floor where
that person lived… thinking about such things only made the kitten run faster up the stairs.
Eventually, Reina came upon the correct floor and skidded to a halt. She was still breathing heavily when she banged on the door loudly. She wanted to yell too but her dry throat wouldn’t let her. Finally, she felt a presence on the other side of the door.
“Who is it—” a voice started to say as the door slowly opened.
The girl stopped halfway and stepped away from the entrance as she realized who her visitor was. Reina opened the door all the way and held on to the edge of the door way to keep herself standing as she was still struggling to get oxygen down her throat. She stared the owner of the home, not sure of what kind of emotion to show. The short-haired girl did the same except she seemed more nervous.
“We need to talk,” Reina said quietly as she ceased her huffing.
“… I know,” Eri replied, closing her eyes for a second. “Come in.”
The kitten silently let herself into the living room and looked around while Eri looked the front door and followed behind her. Reina walked forward where there were picture frames laid out on the table next to the television. The first photo was a baby picture of the turtle, wearing a white dress and pouting at the camera. The second photo was a picture of Eri, still with long hair, posing with another girl with long curly hair who was grinning at the camera. Reina recognized the other girl as “Risa”, or the person she had met at the stairs during her previous visit. The last picture was of Eri, still a toddler, with her parents. They all looked so perfect together; it showed the exact definition of a happy family. Reina’s fist tightened as she stared at the picture that would never have been created in her own family… if it could be called a family at all. Her “family” was all broken now; her mother was dead and it was too late to change that. Her father hated her and had kicked her out. Reina had always been alone.
“You wanted to talk, right?” Eri asked cautiously, breaking Reina out of her trance. “Come sit.”
The ex-yankii turned around to look at the girl who was sitting on the sofa, staring at her with sorrow-filled eyes. Reina could tell the turtle was being very careful, so as not to suddenly anger her ex-girlfriend. The kitten herself had no idea what kind of face she was making, but she knew it wasn’t a happy one. She closed her eyes and breathed through her mouth slowly, trying to relax her expression. She hadn’t come all this way to be angry at Eri all over again.
Reina made her way to the sofa and sat down next to Eri. She could hear the short-haired girl sigh in relief next to her; she was probably glad that Reina hadn’t positioned herself to the far end of the couch, and was comfortable with being near her now.
“… Your bangs got longer,” the kitten said quietly, not wanting the silence to take over.
“Huh?” Eri said, lifting her head slightly and looking up. “Oh. Um, yeah, I have to get them cut again… I see you’re trying out a new hair style.”
Reina raised an eyebrow in confusing before she gasped and touched her head. Her hair was still in its horribly plain, low, ponytail, which was definitely not her style. She ripped the hair-tie off and put it around her wrist while ruffling up her straight hair to make it slightly voluminous again.
“I just rushed out,” she said quickly.
“I can tell,” Eri said, laughing softly.
Reina sighed. Of course, she was still wearing her pajamas. Just fixing her hair wouldn’t make her any more presentable when she was wearing sweatpants with a tank-top and a hoodie. Whatever. It didn’t matter so much anyway.
“Reina, I—”
“Listen, Eri—”
Both girls stopped as they opened their mouth at the same time. Eri bit her lips.
“You can go first,” she offered.
“No, you can talk,” Reina insisted.
“… I just wanted to say that I’m sorry,” the turtle said quietly. “I’m sorry for not telling you the truth beforehand and I’m sorry that you had to find out in such a way. I… It’s just that… when I first saw you, I wanted to get to know you more. And I felt that since you thought I was a boy, I was okay with that as long as I could stay beside you. I didn’t want to let you go… not like that.”
“Eri knew you were close-minded… but she still loved you”, Reina thought, remembering Junjun’s words. “You lied to me,” she said coldly.
“I know I did,” Eri sighed. “And I want to apologize.”
“And you think that will make it better?” Reina laughed dryly. “I’ve been questioning your being and even my own during these past three weeks. Do you know how much I’ve wasted away during that time? How much I thought about this during that time? Enough to scream as loud as I can with my face buried in the pillow before I go to bed, that’s how much! Because if I didn’t do that, I wouldn’t be able to go to sleep.”
No… this isn’t what I wanted to say to Eri. I don’t want to be angry at her! “I’m sorry,” Eri whispered, looking down. “I’m so sorry…”
“And I told you
everything…” Reina continued, feeling drops of tears starting to form at the corner of her eyes. “I told you my darkest secret about how I killed my mother and why I’m living alone out here. I told you things that I wasn’t able to say out loud so easily, because you seemed special. But you… you lied to me.”
I didn’t come here to make Eri feel guilty! So… why am I here…? “It’s all my fault…” Eri said in a hoarse voice, breathing heavily. “I’m sorry… You have every right to feel this way.”
“I’ve never felt more terribly betrayed, Eri,” Reina said through her teeth, letting the tears create a clean stream down her cheeks. “I hate you. I hate you more than anything in the world!”
Eri’s breathing hitched as she immediately raised her hands to rub her eyes, wiping away her own tears. Reina tried to calm herself down as she muttered curses under her breath.
“I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!” she mumbled, over and over again. “I hate you so much, Kamei Eri!”
The turtle broke into her own quiet sobs as she covered her eyes. “Of course you do…” she whispered, laughing weakly. “You have every right to…”
“… But… more than hating you… I hate that I still
love you…”
Eri slowly lifted her head as her eyes widened. She examined her ex-girlfriend’s face, soaked in tears. Reina was biting down on her bottom lip with her eyes shut, which didn’t stop the tears from overflowing.
“I feel like I should hate you so much,” Reina cried, “but I can’t help but love you! You made me feel the worst emotions a human could possibly feel but for some reason, I still wanted to see you… I hate loving you, Eri… I hate it!”
“Reina…”
“But you know,” the kitten said, sniffling and trying to calm herself down, “I’ve done so many bad things in the past, that maybe this is my punishment. Maybe I’m fated to love you and hate it forever. But… I can’t help but think that being with you is a blessing, not a punishment. In which case, I don’t deserve you.”
“Then think of it as a punishment,” Eri said quickly, leaning forward a little. “Think of it as the harshest punishment in the world and stay with me…”
“… You’re such a sadist,” Reina said, breaking out into soft laughter.
“Says the girl who has been ignoring my texts for the past three weeks,” Eri teased back, smiling. “Please… please stay with me…?”
“I just came to talk with you, that’s all.”
“Then let’s talk,” Eri said immediately. “What do you want to talk about? We can talk about anything you want.”
The turtle looked at the kitten with bright eyes, the mere fact that the one she loved was sitting right in front of her. Reina stared back with a blank face. It was slowly starting to get clearer. She had come to this place to see Eri. Because she didn’t care about whether Eri was a boy or a girl now; all that mattered was that Eri was Eri. And Reina could love Eri just the way she was, the exact same way Eri had accepted Reina despite her past.
“… I changed my mind,” Reina said quietly. “Let’s not talk. In fact, don’t say anything at all.”
The kitten swiftly reached forward for the turtle’s face and captured it between her hands. She then pulled herself forward until she felt the familiar softness against her lips. Eri immediately obliged to the ex-yankii’s needs and closed her eyes. She wrapped her arms around Reina’ slim waist and pulled her even closer until she was practically on her lap. Soon, their kiss got more intense as they let the tip of their tongues swish against each other and eventually fight for dominance. Reina moaned softly as the familiar taste of her lover spread in her mouth. Eri slowly leaned forward even more until she pushed the kitten down on her back. Reina gently caressed the turtle’s cheeks as Eri ran her fingers through her lover’s hair. As they parted for a second to catch their breath, Eri pressed her forehead against Reina’s.
“I hate you,” Reina whispered, smiling.
“Love you too,” Eri chuckled.
As they pressed their lips together again, the two lovers made secret vows within their hearts.
I’ll never let you go, ever again. We’ll stay together… no matter what.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
