Chapter 22 Only the sound of the computer keyboard click-clacking in the room resonated. Occasionally, the loud whirring of the printer decreased the awkward silence but as soon as the sound died down, the teacher-student pair was back to square one.
Risa shifted her eyes a little sometimes, catching a glimpse of her teacher typing beside her. She didn’t know why the air felt so heavy in the computer room; she had thought that they were over all the awkwardness now. But maybe it was just the bean who felt that way, since she was very conscious of whether her teacher had read the confession note she had confiscated earlier in the day.
The truth was, that the whole thing was exciting in a way. Risa had never “like-liked” someone before, as Eri had put it. She definitely didn’t want her teacher to find out by reading a note that had been passed back and forth in class. But a strong part of the bean also hoped that her teacher would quickly realize her feelings. She started to think back to that morning: the way her teacher had hugged her so tightly… the way she had laughed… the way her voice sounded…
Gaki-san… thank you, Gaki-san… “Gaki-san.”
“GAH—WOAH!”
Risa jolted out of her flashback and tumbled out of her chair. She fell with her back to the floor while her legs were still on her seat, leaving her in a position very much like the one she was in that morning. Except this time, she was wearing her school uniform so her teacher had a very good view of her pink underwear.
“Gaki-san, are you okay?” Takahashi-sensei asked, jumping out of her seat.
“I’m fine, I’m fine!” Risa reassured, quickly untangling her legs and getting back up to her feet. She pulled her skirt down unconsciously.
This is so embarrassing! “You should wear safety shorts underneath your uniform, Gaki-san,” Ai laughed. “What if it wasn’t me sitting in this chair? What if it was some boy? That would have been dangerous.”
I would’ve preferred it to be a boy; it’s more embarrassing to be in this situation in front of you, the bean thought, blushing. “Yeah, I’ll get some safety shorts or something…”
Before she could do anything more to embarrass herself, Risa quickly sat back down on her chair. She was about to go back to typing, but her teacher started talking again.
“Gaki-san,” Ai said, smiling, “I just wanted to thank you. I takes me a long time to type up these worksheets, I’m glad you’re here to help. But are you sure you want to spend your lunch time this way?”
“I don’t mind helping,” the class representative said, shaking her head. “And if I do this, you’ll get rid of the strike that I have, right?”
“I will, but is it necessary?” the teacher asked, raising an eyebrow. "One strike doesn’t affect your grade in anyway; it’s bad only if you get three strikes.”
“I don’t like having any blemishes on my records,” Risa mumbled. “It makes me uneasy.”
Actually, I could care less at this point. I just want to spend some time with you… “That’s very much like you, Gaki-san,” Ai laughed.
“Why do you have so many things to type up anyway?” the bean questioned. “You only teach our grade… why do you need to make so many worksheets?”
“Because I make different worksheets for every class,” Takahashi-sensei smiled innocently. “I think students should do their own work. It’s the same with tests; no one should ask for questions just because they have my class later in the day.”
“… Sometimes, you really scare me, Sensei,” Risa laughed, feeling a little more relaxed.
“I think you’re more of a perfectionist than me, Gaki-san,” Ai chuckled along.
After that short conversation, the student felt a little calmer. She soon returned to typing as her teacher followed suit. But soon, the bean’s mind was overwhelmed with thoughts about the confiscated note again. Risa clenched her teeth as she braced herself for what she was about to do. She had to be smart about this.
“Um… Sensei?”
“Hm?”
“What did you, uh… do with the note?”
“What note?”
“The note that Kameha and I were passing in class…”
“You’re not getting it back, Gaki-san,” Ai said in a serious tone.
“But you see, I just, uh, wrote some pretty important notes there for a different class,” Risa said quickly. “I’m sorry about passing notes during your class, but can I please have the note back?”
Did she read it or didn’t she? I can’t tell! “Oh, that’s not good then!” Ai panicked, making an apologetic face. “Gaki-san, I already threw away the note. I just thought you girls were gossiping so I didn’t even bother checking the note. I’m so sorry, I can go look for it if you’d like?”
“Oh, it’s fine then!” Risa exclaimed. “It’s okay, I can just recopy the notes from someone else. You, um… definitely threw it away?”
“I’m afraid so,” Ai mumbled. “I’m really sorry, Gaki-san. I should’ve checked what the note was about first—”
“No!” the bean interrupted, smiling nervously. “Ha-ha… it’s really okay, Sensei, really! You don’t need to worry about it, okay?”
“Well, if you say so…”
The teacher still made a very apologetic face and smiled sadly at her student. Risa felt terrible, lying to her teacher like this. But she had no choice; she knew her feelings should be kept a secret. How could a student’s crush on her teacher ever come true? It wasn’t realistic at all.
Suddenly, the school bell ran, indicating the end of the lunch period. Ai got up to pick up the rest of the paper that was on the printer tray. She logged off of her computer as Risa mimicked her actions.
“I’ll straighten up here, Gaki-san, you should get to class,” the teacher said. “Thank you so much for helping out. You saved me a lot of time.”
“It’s no problem at all,” the bean laughed awkwardly. “Um, I’ll see you tomorrow, Sensei… I guess.”
“Yes, I’ll see you tomorrow,” Ai smiled.
The younger girl quickly bowed to her teacher before skittering out of the computer room. Skipping down the hallway, she smiled to herself, relieved that her secret was still undiscovered. If her teacher had read the note by any chance, Risa would’ve had to make her friend into turtle soup that night, so she was glad to be spared from that chore as well.

Ai put down the pile of worksheets on her desk. She divided the stack of papers into three separate piles and started to straighten them out. She then slouched down to her chair and leaned back a little, exhausted from all the typing she had done. She looked around at the other teachers who were busily working on their own desk. So Takahashi-sensei opened her desk drawer to take out a pen.
As she withdrew a black pen from inside her desk, something else caught the teacher’s eyes. Ai dropped the pen down on her desk and removed the small piece of paper from the drawer. She unfolded it and read it again for about the tenth time that day, ever since she had confiscated it from her student.
For one thing, I don’t think I hate her anymore.
In fact, I may even like her.
Ai stared at the note with a blank face, revealing no emotion. She ran her fingers gently over the words and sighed softly. She smiled a little, yet her expression still seemed somewhat sad… pained, even.
You can’t turn back time, Ai, she thought to herself.
It’s too late for you, and for the poor girl. So what’s my next step…?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let me so those reactions!
