Chapter 23 “Mou, Usa-chan, why couldn’t you get here faster?”
“It’s not my fault, the line was too long!”
“Excuses aren’t good, Usa-chan. Lunch period is almost over—”
“Stop complaining!”
“That’s no way to speak to the winner of our game!”
Junjun gasped sarcastically as she put her hand over her heart. Aika and Linlin snickered behind their leader as Sayumi continued to glare at the three delinquents. The bunny had just fought a mob war near the cafeteria to get the specific type of bento that the older panda had wanted; she was angry and frustrated and stressed, but she had no choice. After all, she had lost the bet with the yankii leader and was required to do whatever she said for the whole day.
“Come over here and sit, Usa-chan,” Junjun grinned, motioning for the new girl to sit across from her.
“Can’t I just give you the bento and go?” Sayumi moaned.
“No, we’re all going to eat together,” the panda said.
The bunny quickly scanned class room; everybody seemed to be going about their own business. But the three yankiis as well as Sayumi all knew they were being watched. After all, the delinquent cool queen of the school was, for some odd reasons, expressing the desire to eat with the socially awkward new girl. It was the most unusual match.
But having no choice in the matter, Sayumi trudged towards her “master-of-the-day” and sat down in front of her. She placed the bento on the desk and opened it. She held out a pair of chopsticks to Junjun but the tall girl shook her head.
“I want
you to feed me, Usa-chan,” she grinned.
“You have hands, don’t you?” the bunny coldly replied. “Eat it yourself.”
“Whatever I wish for, remember?” Junjun reminded, smirking.
Sayumi pouted angrily before breaking the wooden chopstick apart and opening the bento box. She went for the first thing in sight, which was a piece of chicken. As soon as she picked it up, Junjun gently took her wrist and navigated the food to her mouth. The panda chewed a couple times before swallowing.
“Oishii,” she smiled. “This is my favorite. Thanks for getting it for me, Usa-chan.”
The black-haired girl said nothing. For some reason, she couldn’t take her eyes of the yankii. There was something about her… the way she looked at her… Sayumi abruptly shook her head and looked away.
“Don’t look at me like that,” she grumbled.
“What way?”
“The way you’re looking at me right now!” Sayumi yelled. “You think that you can just turn on your charm just like that in front of anyone and get any girl you want. Well, I’m not like that. After today, we’ll have nothing to do with each other.”
“… Well, I wasn’t trying to do anything right now,” Junjun chuckled. “But this is kind of interesting; do I really have the ability to just switch my charms on and off like that?” She turned around to her two lackeys. “Do I?”
“It’s a scary talent,” Aika nodded.
“You made a lot of girls cry,” Linlin agreed.
“You had me going for the first five minutes when we met each other,” Aika admitted.
“Yeah, what she said— wait, what?” Linlin abruptly turned to face her girlfriend with a blank face.
“She had me going for five minutes,” Aika giggled. “But you still have me going for three years and much more.” She gave a quick peck on the shorter panda, who then grinned as her cheeks blushed pink.
“Back on topic,” Junjun laughed, turning around to face the bunny once again, “if you’re already conscience of my charms or whatever, Usa-chan, then I’d say resistance is futile at this point.”
“She’s right,” Aika nodded.
“Welcome to Junko-land,” Linlin announced, “where you will wallow in her majesty’s charms and never be able to escape.”
“This is so stupid,” Sayumi muttered under her breath.
So with the bunny’s continuing grumbling and the panda’s constant grinning and teasing, everybody somehow managed to finish their lunch. And, of course, the job of cleaning everything up was left for Sayumi as well.
The black-haired girl walked down the stairs with three empty bento boxes in her arms alone with a plastic bag full of garbage. Since she and the three yankiis were the last to finish their meal, the class duty person had already taken out the garbage. So Sayumi had to return the empty bento box to the cafeteria by herself and take the garbage outside to the dumpsters.
The bunny quickly skittered to the cafeteria, returned the trays, and ran outside to the courtyard. She wanted to quickly finish her chore and go back to class; the last thing she wanted was to be late and be noticeable. Her goal was to blend in. But perhaps it was already too late for that, what with the queen of the school following her around all the time.
Suddenly, a group of girls jumped in the bunny’s way, causing her to stop and stumble back in surprise. The girls were all glaring at her; the one in the middle stepped forward a little and smiled.
“Michishige-san, where are you going in such a hurry?” she asked, obviously acting.
Sayumi stared for a little while then looked away. She decided that she didn’t have time for this so she just clutched onto the garbage bag in her hand and attempted to walk around the band of girls. However, they only side-stepped along with her.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?” the lead girl said. “Don’t ignore us, new girl.”
“What do you want from me?” Sayumi growled.
“Don’t give us that attitude!” the middle girl yelled. “You’ve really been getting on our nerves these days!”
“Yeah, don’t get cocky just because Junjun is giving you a little bit of attention,” another girl said.
“Just leave me alone,” Sayumi said quietly.
A crowd was starting to gather, and she knew most of them were enemies. They all worshipped Junjun after all; it was just jealousy. Not like there was anything to be jealous about… All she wanted to do was just get out of there. But when she tried to leave again, the group of girls pushed her back and snatched the garbage bag away from her hands.
“Hey, give that back!” the bunny yelled, reaching for it but failing to get it.
“Are you ordering us?” one of the girls said. “Who the hell do you think you are?”
“We’ll teach you a lesson!”
One of the girls quickly ripped open the garbage bag and flipped it backwards over Sayumi’s head. All the leftover food and garbage tumbled out and engulfed the black-haired girl, who stood there covering her head, merely whimpering for no other voice could come out.
“Suits you right!” one of the bully girls laughed. “You think you’re so pretty and superior but all we see is the you right now: garbage!”
“Well, that’s not a very nice thing to say.”
Everybody gathered in the courtyard looked up in alarm at the person who had just spoken from the second floor of the school building. The bully girls gasped as they started to panic. The crowd stirred, not knowing how to react towards this sudden appearance.
Junjun was looking down at the crowd from the second floor, one foot on the windowsill. She wasn’t forcing a glare nor she was frowning; her face was quite expressionless and smooth. But that was the terror of the yankii queen; her ice cold eyes sent chills up the bully girls’ spines. Sayumi had never seen Junjun get so serious. Aika and Linlin had similar looks, but their eyes were a little softer.
Suddenly, the older panda jumped out of the window, swung on the nearby tree branch, and landed in a crouch on the ground. Linlin was about to follow along but Aika shook her head.
“Uh-uh, I’m not jumping,” she mumbled. “I just ate. I’m taking the stairs.”
The two girls disappeared from the window on the second floor and the attention went back to the yankii leader on the ground. All the girls in the courtyard watched in silence as Junjun walked towards Sayumi, who was still standing stiffly with her head down, covered in garbage. She took one look at the still bunny and continued walking towards the bullies.
“J-junjun!” one of the girls said, laughing nervously. “We were just… um… that is…”
Without warning, the yankii’s fist flew straight towards the girl’s face. The middle girl shrieked as she shut her eyes tightly and stiffened. However, the pain did not come. The girl slowly blinked her eyes open again to see Junjun’s fist right in front of her eyes. The panda’s eyes were still cold.
“If I didn’t rethink my actions just now,” she said slowly, “you would be in the hospital, severely injured or dead.”
With that, Junjun whipped around, grabbed Sayumi’s wrist, and dragged her off into the school building. She bumped into Aika and Linlin right by the door.
“Clean up for me, will you?” the leader ordered, still expressionless.
“Yes, ma’am,” Linlin answered.
After the two black haired girls went into the building, Aika skipped into the middle of the still silent courtyard. She smiled at the bullies whose eyes were wide in terror now and made eye contact with the rest of the crowd.
“Listen carefully, minna!” she announced energetically. “Jun-senpai was able to control herself this time around so you’re all lucky. Give yourself a pat on the back!” Then, Aika’s eyes changed to give her smile a different meaning. “But if anybody bothers Shige-san from here on out, they’ll have to answer to Jun-senpai, Linlin… and me.” She giggled and winked at one of the bully girls, who looked like she was about to pass out.
The crowd soon dispersed, murmuring to themselves. Half of them were still frightened by Junjun’s character change. The other half was frightened of Aika’s subtle but dangerous announcement. Everybody knew what Aika was capable of, despite her cute looks. But nobody wanted to experience her talent firsthand.
She’s my girlfriend, Linlin thought, sighing,
but she frightens even me sometimes…** ** **
“Ouch! Let go, Junjun— ow! That hurts!”
Sayumi continued to complain as she got dragged down the hall, into the gym, and into the locker rooms. Junjun hadn’t said a word nor showed a hint of a smile. The truth was that the bunny was scared; so there was a legitimate reason why the panda was considered a delinquent, despite being one of the smartest students in the school.
Junjun quickly pushed the new girl into a shower stall and grabbed the shower head. Before Sayumi could turn around, the panda turned the faucet and sprayed her back with cold water, causing her to shrivel up in a corner.
“Kya! It’s too cold! Junjun!”
“It’ll get warmer, just stay still,” the yankii said quietly.
Finally, she was talking! That made the bunny relax a little; maybe she was going to return to her goofy self now.
As promised, the water soon turned warm enough for Sayumi to face her savior properly. Junjun was still expressionless, but her eyes were softer now. She was trying to calm herself down; she knew the limits she could go to before exploding completely. And now was the time to bring her scale back down.
Junjun continued to water down the bunny, who still had her school uniform on.
“Take your clothes off,” the panda ordered.
“Excuse me?”
“Take it off. You smell terrible; just take a quick shower right now. You can change into your gym uniform after.”
“Um… I don’t have a gym uniform yet… They didn’t have my size so they had to order a new one.”
“Wear mine then. Come on, hurry up! We’re already late for class.”
Before Sayumi could protest more, Junjun shut the shower curtains and went to her locker. Meanwhile, the wet bunny slowly started to take off her uniform. She decided to keep her undergarments on, even though they were soaked as well. She just showered the way she was and quickly dabbed some soap on her body and hair before washing again.
Finally, Sayumi turned off the faucet and covered her nearly bare body, holding her wet uniform in front of her.
“Uh… Junjun?”
“I’m right here,” the voice on the other side of the curtain echoed. “You can use my gym towel. It’s clean; I just washed it yesterday. Hand me your uniform.”
A hand entered the shower stall, holding a large towel with the Morning Gakuen logo printed on it. Sayumi carefully took the towel and placed her uniform into the hand. She quickly dried her body and wrapped the large towel around herself. She slowly opened the curtain, expecting to see the yankii standing there, but there was no one. Instead, on the benches laid out across from the rows of shower stalls, a set of red gym uniform was laid out. The bunny quickly caught on, and helped herself to the clothing. They were a little too big on her but it felt soft and warm. She breathed in the scent on the sleeves; it smelled just like her…
“Stop being a perv, Usa-chan.”
The black-haired girl jumped and looked up to see a grinning panda, walking over with a plastic bag in hand. Her smile was back now; the seriousness was gone.
“I’m not a perv!” Sayumi yelled, blushing.
“If you want to smell me, you can just smell me directly, you know?” Junjun continued to tease, chuckling. “No need to resolve to just my clothes.”
“Ugh! You’re despicable!” Sayumi growled. She had thought that maybe Junjun had a nice side to her; after all, she had saved her from those bullies. But it looked as though they were back to square one.
“Says you,” the taller girl laughed. She held out the plastic bag that she was holding on to. “Here’s your uniform. Take it home, wash it, and dry it.”
“Yeah…” the bunny mumbled. As she took the bag, something else on the panda’s hand caught her eye. “Hey… what’s that?”
Gasping, Sayumi grabbed the yankii’s hand and looked at the palm. Her guess was right; there was a red scratch on Junjun’s hand, drawing blood. There were still bits of grated skin near the edges of the cut.
“You’re bleeding!” Sayumi said, horrified. “How did this happen? Did… did you do this when you swung down from the tree earlier?”
“It’s no big deal, Usa-chan,” Junjun scoffed. “Although it’s kind of interesting to see you care so much about me. This is new.”
“Baka.”
Of course I care; you got hurt trying to save me… “Are you thinking that you’re to blame for this?” the panda said, narrowing her eyes. “Don’t go thinking that; it was my carelessness. You had nothing do with this. But it’s good to know that you care; it means you have some sort of sensible side to you.”
“Are you making fun of me?”
“Don’t I always?” Junjun shrugged, still smiling.
“Wait here,” Sayumi grumbled, rolling her eyes. She walked over to almost empty gym locker and opened it. She took out something, closed the locker, and went to the sink. She took some paper towel, drenched it in water, and came back to face Junjun.
“Hold out your hand,” she ordered.
The panda cocked her head curiously but obeyed the bunny. Sayumi carefully wiped the blood away from Junjun’s palm. Having a clearer look at the scratch, Sayumi fumbled with something in her grasp, and finally managed to stick a band-aid on the taller girl’s hand. Junjun looked down and burst out laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Sayumi glared.
“Th… This… Usa-chan… you… bunny band-aid!” Junjun giggled, unable to stop. “You’re 17 years old and you still use bunny-patterned band-aids?”
“Why not? They’re cute…” Sayumi mumbled, her cheeks blushing bright red. “Stop laughing!”
“Ha-ha-ha! Sorry, I just… Ha-ha! Sorry, Usa-chan,” Junjun laughed, finally managing to sigh and calm down. She grinned and spoke sincerely to the girl in front of her. “Thank you. I really appreciate this.”
“… You’re a terrible person,” the black-haired girl mumbled, keeping her gaze down. “I’m glad this is only a one-day deal where I need to follow your orders.”
“Well, if you want revenge on me…” Junjun said, slowly, “we could do another challenge?”
“… Another?”
“Something simple. Like maybe… janken?”
Sayumi hesitated for a while. On one hand, she didn’t want to lose again. But on the other, she really wanted to slave the panda around like she had done to her… And janken seemed like a pretty fair game; they both had equal chances of winning and losing.
“… Deal,” the bunny answered. “Same conditions as last time, right?”
“Yup,” Junjun grinned. “It’s settled then. We’ll decide on a date later; for now, we should go to class.”
“Oh my gosh, class!” Sayumi yelled out loud. “I completely forgot!”
The bunny quickly ran out of the locker room, dashing as fast as she could towards her classroom. Junjun, on the other hand, followed behind lazily, staring at the bunny band-aid on her palm.
Just like I thought, she smiled,
