Chapter 32 The bell rang loud and clear in the classroom, initiating a sudden burst of chatting and shuffling. The last class of the day had finally ended, so the students of Haro Kotogakko were gathering their belongings to head home.
Eri quickly dumped her books into her bag and threw it over her back. As she stood up from her seat, she realized that her cell phone was still on her desk. She picked it up, opened it, and started to dial a number by habit. But before she could press the “call” button, she stopped herself, remembering her new plan to stay away. Suppressing her desires, the turtle sighed before putting her cell phone in her pocket.
Risa gathered her things as well and grabbed her bag. She turned to look at her friend who was looking back at her with a very determined face.
“Risa-chan, ganbare!” Eri said, giving a very powerful gaze.
“Un!” the bean replied, making a fist. “I’ll do my best!”
“I’ll be cheering for you!” the turtle said, also holding up a fist.
“Yosh!” Risa sighed. “Here I go!”
With that, the bean skittered out of the classroom, through the hallways, and down the stairs. She didn’t want to keep her teacher waiting in the courtyard too long; after all, she had said that there was another business she needed to attend to.
At the speed she was going, Risa reached the familiar tree at the courtyard in no time. It was peculiar to see the yard so empty, since school was now over and everybody was too busy leaving. Under the large tree, the one person that the bean had wanted to see was waiting, checking her watch. Her long wavy brown hair was pulled back partially with a clip; she was wearing a white blouse with a pink skirt that reached just below her knees. There was a bag slung over her shoulder as she held onto it tightly. The student took a deep breath.
Okay, this is it! She thought.
The moment is finally here, Risa. Don’t back down now, you can do this! While calming herself down, the bean slowly walked over to the tree to reveal herself to her teacher. Ai turned around and smiled, spotting her best student. The flash of her happy expression was enough to make the teenager’s heart skip a beat.
“Gaki-san,” Takahashi-sensei greeted. “I was waiting for you.”
“Thank you for sparing your time for me,” Risa said, bowing her head. “It really is important…”
“I understand,” Ai chuckled. “You’ve told me a lot of things already; I guess I don’t mind hearing a couple things more. But are you sure I’m the right person to tell?”
“Oh, I’m sure,” Risa sighed.
Who else would I confess my love to? What is she even talking about? “I just don’t want you to tell me too many secrets,” Ai explained. “I mean, I would think that normal students would go gossip with their friends instead of their teacher.”
“Why, am I not to trust you?” Risa asked teasingly.
Oh, I see; she thinks I’m about to confide in her about teenage problems like I did with Eri’s issue. “Of course you can trust me,” the teacher grinned. “If you’re okay with it, then I don’t mind listening.”
“Okay, then,” Risa giggled softly.
Oh god, here I go… “So what were you going to tell me?” Ai inquired.
“So… you see…” the younger girl started as she lowered her head, already feeling the heat rising in her cheeks, “I know I wasn’t so kind to you in the beginning of the year. But I think I slowly learned to like you more and respect you in a way throughout the semester. And, well, I still don’t know your secret and all but that doesn’t matter to me anymore. I don’t want to dig into something you don’t want me to know.”
Stop babbling, Risa, you sound like an aho. What are you, Kameha? “Um, anyway, my point is, I think that we, uh, hit it off well with each other eventually…”
‘Hit it off’? It’s official; I’m more of an aho than even Eri. “Well, what I’m trying to say is… I think my feelings for you have grown past the extent of just respect.”
“… What are you trying to say?”
“What I mean to say is…” Risa hesitated, fumbling with the cluster of words in her mouth, “I think… I’ve fallen in love with you. No, I know that I’m in love with you! I really like you and I want to be with you, Sensei… and if you will accept my feelings—”
“I can’t.”
Risa looked up with wide eyes as she got a clear look at her teacher’s face. Ai’s expression was hardened as she was gently biting down on her bottom lip. She was avoiding eye contact with the bean but the aura she was giving off was enough to give Risa a hint.
“… W-what…” the student mumbled, even though she had heard clearly the first time.
“I can’t,” Ai said with determination once more. “I can’t accept your feelings, Gaki-san. I’m sorry.”
“… Oh…” Risa mumbled again. She took a deep breath and let out a small laugh. “Well, I guess I knew this was the more likely result anyway. It’s not that surprising. But… um… can I still know why?”
“… Gaki-san, you’re a very beautiful girl,” Ai started, stilling keep her gaze to the side. “You’re smart and kind and pure and everything that I ever wanted to be. Thanks to you, I think I’ve achieved maybe a quarter of what you are. But I still don’t want someone like me to be with a girl like you. You should find a more a suitable person your own age.”
“… So this isn’t even about the fact that you’re a teacher and I’m a student?” the bean said slowly, an unknown emotion starting to engulf her. “This isn’t even about the fact that I’m six years younger than you?”
“Well, that too…”
“So it’s not even about public morals?” Risa said, raising her tone. “It’s about you being the bad one and me being the good one again? I thought you let that idea go!”
“I never said—”
“But you meant it!” Risa interrupted, now yelling at the expressionless teacher. “What are you always so afraid of? Why are you so scared to… to… contaminate me or something? Why do you always degrade yourself?”
“Gaki-san—”
“You know, one inevitable thing is the fact that I did fall in love with you. That had nothing to do with your intentional actions, it’s all me being attracted to who you are. If I’m as good as you say, and I want to be with you, that means there’s got to be some ‘good’ in you, right?”
“Gaki-san, listen—”
“I don’t want your stupid concepts of good and bad to be the thing that stops us from being together! I don’t want my feelings trampled by your unreasonable guilt, Sensei, I love you! And if you care about me enough, you would think this way, even just a little bit—”
“But I don’t!” Ai yelled, cutting Risa’s rant half way. She was now directly staring at the younger girl. There was a certain intensity in her eyes; Risa wasn’t sure what it was but she knew it was there and it was piercing through her heart.
“… what?”
“I don’t care for you in that sense,” the teacher said straightforwardly, with the same hard expression. “That’s my main reason for rejecting you. I don’t have the same feelings towards you. I see you as my student—a special student, but a still a student—nothing more, nothing less.”
Risa stood frozen for a while as she processed what she had just heard. So everything that she had thought and felt was all an illusion. She was just entertaining herself in her own mind. Sensei had never treated her in a special way because she saw her as a different girl. She did so because she was just the oh-so-special class representative.
“… I see…” the bean whispered, lowering her head a little again. “That’s it, isn’t it? You don’t feel the same way for me; it was just a one-sided crush… it’s natural for you to reject me…”
“… Gaki-san—” Ai started, lifting her hand to reach out to the younger student.
“Please don’t,” Risa said, stepping back. “I’m perfectly fine! I’m perfectly…”
Suddenly, the short-haired girl felt something wet traveling down her cheeks. Before she knew it, her entire face felt soaked. How odd… she was smiling, yet the tears were uncontrollable… because they were tears from the heart. A young 17-year-old girl could only contain so much emotion.
“Eh… why am I…” Risa laughed shakily, trying to dry her tears with her sleeves to no avail. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I’m sorry, I just…”
“Gaki-san, I—”
“Sorry for bothering you today, Sensei,” Risa said quickly, ducking her head so as not to show her embarrassed face. “If you can, please forget this ever happened and please don’t let it burden you.”
After a quick bow, the young girl turned around and ran out of the courtyard and disappeared into the school building. Ai called her name but failed to let her voice out loudly enough. She tried to reach out, even, but slowly put her hand down. She clenched her hand into a fist as if to hold on to something, to herself.
This… is the best way… right? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh yeah, I did it.

btw, I don't know when I'm closing the poll but it looks like School-life is winning by a LOT so... yeah, we'll see though

But I got some real kickass ideas for each of the genres...
A question for all: If i do write another school-life fic, would you guys be angry if i make the school not very school-like? It might have a twist of k-drama in it too (cuz that's just in my blood and i'm so obsessed with dramas these days)

just a quick survey so I can think things through before I over-plan, you know?

anyway, this chapter marked the end of a certain arc... kinda but not really
