Chapter 66 Tanaka Koichi couldn’t help but sigh deeply, visibly showing his disappointment in his wrinkled expression. Well, the pictures of the campus on the internet definitely looked better than the real thing, but that probably held true for any kind of website for a public space. Except that this was a private school and Tanaka Shachou really had expected a bit more from the highly acclaimed Morning Gakuen. What he had just seen inside the school was no more than an average school: old walls, creaking floor boards, loud doors… it was clearly not a replica of the pictures on their website.
At least the curriculum was still superior like he had heard, compared to the not-so-superior old buildings that really needed a new paintjob. He had wanted his daughter to go to a school that could change her for the better, to knock her out of that fighting habit and tone her down into a more… composed lady, worthy of the Tanaka name. And it seemed that his desires had come true, as Reina was indeed known as a very good student amongst the teachers at this renowned Academy. He was told multiple times what a wonderful daughter he had raised, and he appreciated those words—except that he knew she was still disobeying him.
And why not disobey him? Tanaka Koichi knew very well what he was asking of his daughter; she had lived her entire life belonging nowhere. And now that she got settled into Tokyo, he was asking her to leave. He knew how much that would break her, but he had no choice. It was vital that Reina get back to Fukuoka with him immediately. She may cry now, but scars were meant to heal. She’d get better.
But what surprised him more were his own reactions to her defiance. He had actually
hit her. Reina. His one and only child. He hadn’t even laid a hand on her after his wife passed away as an indirect result of his daughter being arrested. In fact, he hadn’t even yelled at her. He had just asked her to pack up, leave, and go to Tokyo for the time being. And that time had extended out into three years. Perhaps that kind of silence was even worse; perhaps he should have yelled at her so that he could hold some kind of conversation between them, even if it was only to be an argument. It would’ve been better than pushing her away with silence. When he had held his head in his hands and refused to look up at her, she had just answered him quietly in obedience. She had left by train that very night. He was half-shocked and half-relieved. Shocked, because she had taken her punishment quietly and relieved, because it meant she had honestly loved her mother. But this was the worst possible way to find out.
And now, after so many years, the first contact they have during their reunion had to be a slap on the face, literally. How could he have done such a thing? That precious child that he had gained after so much effort he had put in, along with his wife, had been harmed by his own hands. The look on her face was… agony. Those eyes of hers resembled her mother so much that whenever he gazed at them, it pained him. They had the same mouth and the same stubborn tongue, but that determination and courage in her eyes was her mother’s.
And that other girl that was there. Kamei was her name, was it? Kamei something. He could remember her family name because it strangely sounded like “turtle”. It was only one more kanji added at the end, after all. She had taken the second hit for Reina. Sure, they were good friends but still, most friends wouldn’t quite literally come between family matters in such a manner. And the way she looked at him was simply overwhelming, so full of force and even hate, yet still pleading. She hadn’t made such a strong impression when he had first questioned her, but now he couldn’t forget that girl and the way her arms were stretched across to protect Reina… which was why he had made a special request to his right-hand man.
“You have her file, Kaneda?” the president asked as he comfortably settled into his car seat.
“Yes sir,” the subordinate answered, handing his boss a manila folder. “I went to her school earlier this morning and did some research. Of course, I avoided any suspicions.”
“Good work, Kaneda,” Tanaka Shachou nodded as she opened the folder to face a student profile page.
Average to failing grades, no club activities, “not focused in class”, a couple friends… This girl is so average that it’s ridiculous how she became friends with a Morning Gakuen student like Reina. “Shachou, are we heading back to the hotel?” Kaneda asked, peering at his employer through the rear-view mirror.
“… No,” Tanaka Koichi answered, closing the folder. “I want to go to one more place.”
“Shachou, you really should rest…” Kaneda said, worriedly.
“I’m fine, I’m not that sick yet,” President Tanaka grunted. “Now take me to Haro Kotogakko. There’s something I’m curious about…”

The hallway remained silent except for the sound of Risa’s feet, skipping happily. Classes had signaled its end a long time ago, but the class representative had had to stay after to supervise the play practice that had gone on. Even though Eri had left early right after her last class, the rest of the crew had insisted on staying after to at least finish all the costume and stage set work. Some of the classmates were frustrated over Eri’s early departure, but Risa had managed to calm them down. After all, she understood very well what her turtle friend was going through with her girlfriend after their little text message session during English class. Of course, they took care not to continue that digital conversation into history class to avoid Takahashi-sensei’s hawk eyes.
After a long day of being stuck in the classroom, the bean was glad to have finally been released from her day as a responsible iinchou. She had sent all her fellow peers home first, insisting that she would clean up the mess after them. After her final job was done, she had realized the school was probably empty by now, as it was already time for the sun to set. So she had quickly gathered her own things and was now making her way to the place where her lover was waiting.
Risa quickly slid the door open to peek into the teacher’s office. The room was dark except for the orange sunlight seeping through the blinds and a single desk lamp switched on. There was only one person in the room, a woman with her long brown hair in a ponytail, sitting in front of her computer and typing something furiously. The bean smiled, pleased to see her lover working so hard while waiting for her.
Risa carefully slipped past the door and tip-toed over to Ai’s desk. The older woman was completely unsuspecting, as she was fully engrossed in her work. Risa stifled a giggle as she slowly glided behind her girlfriend and lifted her hands up. Then, she slammed them down on Ai’s shoulders and yelled.
“Sensei!”
“AGH!”
As she let out a man-scream, the teacher whipped around in shock to spot her girlfriend, laughing like crazy. She let out a deep sigh of relief and put her hand over her heart.
“Gaki-san, you scared me!” Ai breathed.
“Never gets old,” Risa grinned, kissing the teacher’s cheek. “Otsukaresama deshita!”
“Otsukare,” Ai chuckled. “Did you finish everything you needed to do?”
“Yup! Sorry you had to wait long, Sensei.”
“It’s okay, I was just finishing up some grading,” Ai smiled, logging off her computer and standing up from her chair. “Good job on that last paper. Maybe you can spread some of that wisdom to your friend?”
“Believe me, I tried,” Risa groaned, imagining what kind of grade Eri could have received this time.
“Well, you’re not supposed to be responsible for her anyway,” Ai laughing softly.
The teacher packed a couple notebooks in her bag and slung it over her shoulder. As she straightened her back to turn off the desk lamp, Risa could see her full body now, dressed in a loose white blouse and a semi-tight pencil skirt. It was the perfect outfit to show off her slim figure.
“Shall we go, then?” Ai suggested. “I’ll take you home.”
“Home?” Risa blinked in surprise. “I thought… we were going to hang out today.”
“We were… but it’s getting late,” Ai shrugged. “It’s time for dinner soon, so you should get home. We’ll go out some other time.”
“But you promised we’d have a date today!” Risa argued, visibly showing her discontent. “We were going to go to the mall, take purikura, and—”
“Yes, that’s what we planned,” Ai reasoned, patting her girlfriend’s head, “but I didn’t think we would stay in school this late. You should keep your curfew and go home.”
“I don’t even have a curfew!” Risa yelled, rolling her eyes. “That’s just something you made up even though my own mother doesn’t mind. You always baby me like this, but I’m old enough to take care of myself!”
Risa looked straight at her lover, who was obviously quite taken aback by her outburst. She quickly looked away and sighed. She couldn’t help but feel pathetic how she was asking her teacher not to baby her, yet she was being so immature, yelling like this. Behold, the irony.
Ai said nothing. She had indeed wanted to baby her girlfriend and was, in a way, kind of glad that Risa exploded like this. The girl really needed to express her deeply buried feelings rather than keeping them hidden. But Ai didn’t want to upset the bean in order to bring this effect out. She never meant to disappoint her.
“… Gaki-san—”
“Forget it, I didn’t say anything,” Risa said quickly, sighing. “Let’s just… go home.”
She forced a smile at her lover, trying to convince her that she was alright. Of course, Ai’s hawk-like senses could not be tricked so easily. The teacher stared at her girlfriend for a while before dropping her bag on the floor, walking over to the door, and turning the lock. When she marched back over to the bean, she pulled the schoolbag off of Risa’s back and turned her around. Risa’s eyes were wide open and shot with confusion.
“I’m sorry about our date,” Ai murmured, stroking the younger girl’s cheeks, “but I can try to make it up to you…”
As Risa let out a soft gasp, Ai easily captured her lover’s lips with her own and kissed her slowly. The loving kiss immediately distracted Risa from her own anger, allowing her to now fully engage in this new action. She coiled her arms around Ai’s neck, pulling her closer, as Ai hugged her tightly around the waist. Then, the teacher suddenly pushed her girlfriend back towards her desk until Risa leaned against the edge of the desk and could no longer move anywhere. The kiss heated up fast as Ai moved her lips against her lover’s faster, hungry for more. Risa let out a moan as she tried to keep up with her eager girlfriend. Suddenly, Ai slightly lifted the young girl by her waist and sat her down on the desk, pinning her hands down. Risa let out a short yelp in surprise but Ai only continued her attack with a smirk; she quickly pushed Risa’s legs apart to step in between them, automatically allowing Risa to straddle her waist. When the bean tried to push her back, Ai merely kept her girlfriend’s hands pinned down on the desk, completely immobilizing her.
“S-sensei…?” Risa stammered, turning bright red.
“Since you want to grow up so fast,” Ai softly murmured as she played with Risa’s hair, “let me show you how adults play before their curfew…”
As the teacher gently traced her girlfriend’s lips with her tongue, the younger girl couldn’t stop her heartbeat from racing faster and faster. Risa’s chest heaved up and down as Ai started to undo the top three buttons of Risa’s uniform to reveal just a bit of her undergarment, all the while laughing amusedly at her innocent reaction.
“So I’m not allowed to make a move on you,” Risa breathed, “but you can do whatever you want with me?”
“Last time I checked, teachers order students, right?” Ai chuckled. She bent her head down and started to trail kisses on her lover’s bare chest, before sucking down the soft skin to mark her territory. Risa threw her head back, gasping, as her legs around her teacher’s waist tightened.
“Yet you still expect me to wait until graduation?” Risa whispered, satisfied with the attention she was receiving but quite frustrated with the logic of the situation. “At least let me—”
“Don’t test me, baby,” Ai sighed. She finally looked up at Risa’s red face again, satisfied with the pink mark she left on her collar bone. “I already made it clear that I want you, right? So just wait a bit more… for me?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll preserve my childhood innocence or whatever,” the bean grumbled, rolling her eyes.
“Thank you,” Ai smiled. “And I promise you that we will definitely go on a date before that mark on your chest disappear. Deal?”
“Deal,” Risa grinned, kissing her lover.
“Okay, time to really head out now,” Takahashi-sensei sighed, helping Risa hop down from the desk. She took care in redoing every button she had opened on the student’s shirt before she ruffled her hair teasingly. “Pick up your bag, let’s get out of here.”
Risa made an annoyed expression as her hair was messed up, but eventually just laughed. Ai gathered her own things and offered her hand to her girlfriend, who willingly took it. Together, the couple made their way out of the teacher’s office and down the stairs. The entire school was really silent except for the custodians in their office, waiting to start their night shift. When the lovers stepped outside into the field, the sky was already dyed in deep red from the disappearing sun. As Risa energetically talked about the play rehearsal and other interesting things that happened that day, Ai spotted a man, lingering around the entrance gate. She signaled her girlfriend to stop chatting by putting her hands up; Risa paused immediately and followed Ai’s gaze to where she was staring, and cocked her head to the side in confusion. Taking silent hints from each other, they let go of each other’s hand and walked over to the man. He was dressed nicely in a black suit and blue tie; he didn’t seem familiar at all.
“Um… excuse me?” Takahashi-sensei called, capturing the man’s attention. “Can I help you?”
“… Perhaps,” he answered, narrowing his eyes. From afar, he looked well-groomed and very professional. But after getting closer, Risa managed to catch all the wrinkles gained from aging on the man’s face. He still seemed like an upright man, but definitely older.
“Are you… a parent?” Ai questioned. “None of the teachers are left except for me but I can take a message, if you’d like?”
“No, no, that won’t be necessary,” the man said, shaking his head. “I’m not a parent, just an… acquaintance, of a student. I was just looking around the school while waiting for my ride… he made a short trip to the gas station.”
“Oh,” Ai remarked, still not quite sure what to make of this situation. “Well… if there’s anything else I can assist you in—”
“Actually, there may be,” the man said suddenly. “Do you maybe teach a student named… Kamei?”
“Why, yes, Kamei Eri,” Ai said surprised, “she’s a student of mine.” Her eyes flickered towards her girlfriend, but Risa’s expressions clearly revealed the fact that she had no idea what the relationship between the man and her friend was.
“If I may ask… is she a good student here?” the man inquired. “Anything she is specially good at, or the way she socially interacts with other students… both in and out of school?”
“… I’m sorry, if you are not her parent, I do not feel comfortable revealing that sort of information,” Takahashi-sensei replied firmly, gaining a sigh of relief from Risa.
“Oh no, I’m no one dangerous, I already know quite a things about this Kamei Eri, actually,” the man coughed. “Like the fact that she receives generally low grades, and that she’s not good at speaking to others on their first meeting, and that she’s rather… ditzy. Excuse me, but she seems to be a very incompetent young lady who has no class at all.”
“I’m sorry, sir—”
“Well, excuse you!” Risa interrupted angrily, taking a step in front of her teacher. The man directed his attention to her, surprised at hearing her voice for the first time. “That incompetent girl with no class that you’re talking about happens to be my best friend!”
“Now you listen, young lady—”
“No,
you listen to
me!” Risa growled, glaring at the man in rage. “I don’t know who you are or what your problem is, but you have no right to talk about Eri like that, especially when you don’t even know her! Yeah, she may be kind of loopy sometimes… but Eri is
the sweetest person I know, and really down-to-earth. She’s the type of person who listens first before judging, and would never decide a person’s character based on their appearance or background. And when it come to people she cares about, she wouldn’t hold back anything to continue protecting them and treasuring them. That’s why I’m grateful to be her friend, and that’s why everybody in the school can’t help but love Eri! So why don’t you get to know someone first before you go ahead and gossip about them, Oji-san!”
As Risa continued to fume in her own anger, the man opened his mouth to say something but could find no words. Ai smiled to herself as she mumbled, “That’s my girl”.
The man had no idea what to say to the student. Yes, he still thought that Kamei Eri was this ditzy, unsophisticated city girl, but he found himself starting to believe the words of this girl in front of him. They way Kamei Eri had been there for his daughter this entire time, despite her past and the initial happening that made her leave her original home… and the way she had protected his daughter when he had lost control… Those were the kind of things he couldn’t do for his daughter. He had failed to look past his daughter’s mistakes for the past three years, and was never there for her during their separation. What a terrible father he had been…
“… I suppose I have misjudged Kamei Eri,” the man said in a low voice. “I apologize for my rude behavior. I’m glad to have been enlightened by you, young lady.”
“Hope I was helpful in your little research, or whatever you’re doing,” Risa grumbled, triggering a nudge from her lover.
“Yes, you certainly were,” the man said, smiling a little. “I’m sorry for the disturbance. Have a good evening, the both of you.”
“I thought your car was…” Ai started.
“I’ll start walking a little; the car will come by,” the man nodded. “Farewell.”
“Good-bye, then.”
The man bowed, as did Ai and Risa, and started to walk down the street. The two lovers stare at his back for a while before the bean started to grumble to herself.
“Who does he think he is, coming here and talking about Eri like that…” she muttered angrily.
“It’s okay, just let it go,” Ai chuckled, putting her arm around the girl. “I’m proud of what you did there to defend Kamei-san. That was very noble of you… and sweet.”
“Well, Eri would’ve done the same for me,” Risa shrugged. “Can we go home now?”
“Let’s go,” Ai grinned.
The couple held hands together once again and started to head down the sidewalk. But only after a couple steps, they heard a thud behind them, as though something had fell. Risa just glanced back first nonchalantly, then gasped in shock. Ai also turned around after that, and her eyes widened in surprise as she spotted the man they had conversed with, collapsed on the sidewalk. She quickly dashed over with Risa behind her and bent down.
“Oji-san?” Risa called, shaking the limp body. “Oji-san, what’s wrong? Answer me!”
“Stop shaking him!” Ai yelled. She took a better look at the man’s face and then pressed her fingers against his pulse point on his wrist. “Call 911, Gaki-san. He coughed up blood, then fainted. Hurry, now!”
Still feeling shaky, Risa quickly took out her cell phone and dialed the three numbers. The tone only went once before the Tokyo hotline was answered by a deep voice.
“I-I-I need an ambulance in front of Haro Kotogakko right away!” Risa yelled in a panicked voice. “We have a man down, h-he coughed up blood, please hurry!”
