Chapter 75 Risa steadily tapped her pencil on the fresh page of her notebook in rhythm to the ticking of the clock, counting down the seconds. She felt uncomfortable about ruining a perfectly good page of her neatly-kept notebook but she had no choice. She needed to keep her head down in her own work to avoid the pair of eyes that was staring holes through her. And since she needed an excuse to be paying attention to a blank sheet of lined paper, she was copying down the notes on the board, like everybody else in the class was. The difference between Risa and the rest of her peers was that she was only pretending while the rest of the students were actually taking notes.
Of course, Risa had already finished taking notes a while ago. Not like she needed to take notes in the first place anyway; this was Niigaki Risa, the class representative, top student in the school, the queen of smarts, girl wonder. It only just so happened that this little miss perfect had a friend who couldn’t go through one period without dozing off into dreamland. The notes were a form of sympathy for the hopeless little turtle who would probably need an instruction manual for how to go to college. Risa was pretty sure the book store had a guide for something like that. What was the title? College Planning for… for someone… bakas? Ahos? Turtles? Whatever it was, Risa made a mental note to get a copy for her friend.
Risa warily looked up at the board, stealing a glimpse of her teacher. She was still staring! And she hadn’t even blinked since the last time Risa caught her watching her, much less moved. What was Takahahi-sensei thinking? What if the other students noticed her gazing at the bean desperately, as though she was calling out to her? For a teacher, Ai was making a rather stupid move.
Not like Risa could blame her either. She had successfully avoided meeting, conversing, and speaking to her teacher for the past week or so. Time had passed by since the little rehearsal incident, yet Risa still found it difficult to forgive her lover. Frustration had piled up inside her for months before she had completely blown up in front of Ai when they were in the closet together before, and Risa was fearful that perhaps she may do so again. She wasn’t sure whether the little angry volcano inside her was completely dormant yet. And she didn’t want to yell at her girlfriend anymore either. It didn’t make either of them feel better anyway.
However, the uncertainty inside Risa still made her hesitate to accept Ai back. She was truly missing her presence, yet she knew they would only fight again if things didn’t change. And since she was left with no clear solution to the problem, Risa had just avoided the subject altogether.
The school bell finally rang throughout the building, indicating the end of another tedious day. The students started to pack idly, chatting with their friends to make plans of returning home together. Risa mercilessly shoved her notebook and pen into her bag and jumped up. Her peripheral vision caught her teacher, walking towards her with a determined look. Oh, not again. She was trying to catch her before she left the classroom. Well, Risa had succeeded in evading her teacher for a week; she could probably do it for one more day.
“Eri, let’s go,” Risa said quickly. She could tell her friend was still only half-awake, so she took charge and started to throw Eri’s things into her bag.
“You know, Risa-chan,” the turtle sighed, glancing at the teacher approaching them, “I really think that you should talk to her—”
“And I really think that we should leave,” Risa growled through her teeth, “NOW.”
Not taking the chance of being caught by her sensei, the bean grabbed her friend’s wrist and quickly dragged her out of the classroom, ignoring Ai’s voice calling her name from behind her. She quickly ran down the hallway, pushing through the crowd of students beginning to leave the building, as Eri staggered behind her. When she skipped down the stairs and felt that she was safe, Risa stopped to catch her breath and leaned on the wall. On the other hand, Eri collapsed right in front of her, wheezing heavily.
“Nothing like a good run after a nap,” Eri huffed, fanning herself.
“You should really stop sleeping in class,” Risa advised. “One of these days, I’m going to stop taking notes for you.”
“And you should really stop avoiding Takahashi-sensei,” Eri shot back. “One of these days, she’s going to stop chasing you.”
“That’s none of your business, Eri.” The bean crossed her arms across her chest, not wanting to talk about the crisis presented.
“It’s my business if it affects you,” the turtle replied back, standing up to dust off her skirt. “Look, Risa-chan, it’s already been a week since you’ve stopped talking to her. I know you said there’s another reason to be mad at her other than the little incident with Nakki but… forgive and forget, you know? You can’t ignore her forever.”
“… It’s not that simple,” Risa mumbled, closing her eyes. “It’s just… I’ve done a lot of thinking recently, and I’ve come to the conclusion that talking to her as of now isn’t a good idea. Not safe for either of us.”
“Well, if that’s your conclusion, what’s the solution?” Eri questioned. “You two can’t stay like this forever.”
“Yeah, well, one thing that I do know is that something needs to change,” Risa sighed. “And she needs to be the one to make that change. I’ve done my part of thinking so now it’s her turn to figure out how to fix everything.”
“If you say so…” Eri eyed her friend as she decided to shrug off the topic. The mood was getting much too heavy, considering school was finally over for the day. “Our play rehearsal is in the auditorium today, right? On stage? We should get going.”
“You’re coming to rehearsal?” Risa laughed. “I thought you’d be running off to Tanakacchi again.”
“Yeah, I will be,” the turtle grinned, “after the princess is saved. Nakki left threatening texts in my phone. I don’t want to raise more hell fire.”
“Good,” Risa nodded firmly, “because I don’t want to take all the blame for you not being there. Let’s go.”
The two girls started to make their way through the thinning crowd of students, side by side, towards the auditorium. But before the next minute could end, Eri’s phone sent out a loud ring, indicating the arrival of a new text message. The turtle groaned, thinking that it was probably her director. When she flipped the phone open, however, an unforeseen message was written out.
“… Oh my gosh.”
“What is it?”
Wordlessly, Eri held up her cell phone to show the screen to her friend.
He’s up.
~Reina
Risa exhaled deeply as she glanced by at her friend. Eri was staring at her with hopeful eyes, biting down on her lips. Her swallowing was visible as her throat moved up and down.
“… You should go,” Risa said finally. “She needs you. I’ll try to deal with Nakki.”
“Thanks, Risa-chan!” the turtle gushed happily, giving her friend a good squeeze. “I promise I’ll make it up to you somehow!”
She clumsily linked her pinky to her friend’s before running off towards the opposite direction, leaving Risa to come up with excuse to Eri’s absence. The bean ran several plans through her head before deciding that none of them was going to work. Groaning in frustration, she began to walk towards the auditorium again, ready to face all hell fire.
