Molotov cocktail used as weapon in attempted robbery

A 19-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly tried to rob a gas station using a Molotov cocktail as a weapon, police said Wednesday.

“Usually people are going to try to use a more conventional weapon,” said Sgt. David Christie, who’s with the Ottawa police arson section. “It was definitely a little unusual.”

The man went into a gas station on Bank Street around 12:05 a.m. on Tuesday.

A customer who saw the man holding a Molotov cocktail grabbed him and pushed him out the door, police said. The Molotov cocktail dropped, but did not ignite.

The suspect fled the gas station, but was arrested about 15 minutes later.
