Chapter 7
Yuki’s voice was shaky, with her swallowing nervously.
Will her lie fail? Of course it would! She just bumped onto this girl who she claimed as a close friend, there’s no way anyone would buy into that. Most of all, the chances of the girl helping her and deciding to go along with her story was slim. For sure, she would reveal the truth and say that both of them are nothing but strangers.
She sighed inwardly.
Why on earth did she say that anyway?
“Really? Mind introducing me to this friend of yours, then?”
Yuki gulped. For sure, she was doomed now.
“I’m… Rena.”
Both she and Mayu blinked, their heads immediately shifting to the mystery girl. Jurina, who was still quiet all this time, continued on simply staring at her, never removing her eyes from the stranger as though she had invisible magnets. This didn’t go unnoticed by Mayu, of course, but she decided to ignore it.
The girl soon smiled and held her hand out to Mayu, “And I suppose you are Yukirin’s friend?”
The said Yukirin couldn’t help her eyes from widening in surprise. Even though Mayu only said her ever so weird nickname once, the girl was able to remember it! Not to mention that she also went ahead with her lie… Why?
Keep your self composed, Yuki, if Mayu notices that you’re surprised too, she might get fishy… the writer thought to herself as she straightened up a little. She still was curious as to why the girl followed her suit though. But that curiosity can wait.
She turned her head towards Mayu, who had a priceless surprised look plastered on her face. A smile crawled itself on her face as soon as she saw this. Seems like I win again eh? Mayu?
“J-Just a workmate.” For the first time, Yuki heard Mayu stutter in defeat. And it was something close to music in her ears. When did she become so sadistic anyway? “I’m Watanabe Mayu. It’s a pleasure to… Meet you… A-And you!” The young otaku suddenly pointed at her, “Remember, you have work today! If you skip work just because your friend is with you, then Sasshi is bound to lose some amount on her paycheck. So you better not skip it, understand? Now then, let’s go, Center.”
Eh? Yuki blinked repeatedly as she watched the cyborg-like waitress turn her back at her and walk away angrily, waiting for her to at least get a few more feet away from her before muttering out, “Seems like someone’s butthurt about her defeat…”
“Um…”
Remembering that ‘Rena’ was there with her, Yuki immediately removed her eyes from Mayu’s back and shifted it to the other girl, smiling at her apologetically before bowing down in a quick manner, “Thank you so much for your help! You don’t know how much you’ve helped me just by tagging along with that stupid lie of mine… I… I hope it didn’t offend you in someway that I just claimed you as a close friend of mine out of nowhere…”
The girl’s smile in reply blinded Yuki a little. Well, not literally, of course. But it was bright enough for her to believe that it was. “No problem. It also helped me a little, that lie of yours.”
“Eh…? It helped you? How?”
“Well…” Trailing off, the girl looked around for a bit before giving off a sheepish smile, “Before that, can we go somewhere where it’s more private? Like a café, I’ll explain everything to you there.”
Furrowing her brows, Yuki slightly nodded her head. “I think I know just the right place.”
-
Feeling someone’s stare stabbing through her back, Yuki couldn’t help herself but steal some quick glances at the young waitress behind the counter- Mayu, to be exact and stick her tongue out at her occasionally, making her angrier. Beside her was Sasshi, who as expected, was watching the two in amusement.
“Ah- This tastes good!” Matsui Rena exclaimed after taking a quick sip of the coffee Yuki brewed for her. Noticing that she just unconsciously yelled it out loudly, she silently placed the cup down with her head bowed down.
Yuki couldn’t help herself from smiling at this. Even though she herself was called as a reaction queen by her old friends, Rena seems like she would fit well as the princess. “If you want, I can brew you another coffee the next time you come here. Of course, I’ll make it extra good for you.” She winked at the girl before her before shifting her eyes towards the counter, expecting to see Mayu’s angry face- only to find out that it was just Sasshi there.
She eyed the girl who was playing with the cash register and furrowed her brows as soon as their eyes met. Sashihara, as though she received a message from Yuki, shrugged her shoulder and pointed at the ‘employee’s room’ with a troubled smile spreading on her face, shaking her head soon after with a silent sigh.
Oh… she walked out. That loser. Even though she was quite disappointed that Mayu walked away, she was still happy. At least it meant that she won again, now it was strike three. Winning this game sure was easy- whatever this game she invented by herself is.
“A-Anyway,” Rena immediately caught her attention again, with her eyes removing itself from the door and back to the girl, “First, let me start by introducing myself properly to you… My name is Rena, Matsui Rena. And Jurina- that girl your co-worker just called Center… Is a cousin of mine who ran away from home in Nagoya.”
“Ran away from home?!” Yuki half whispered and half yelled out of surprise. “That girl did?
Most of all… All the way from Nagoya to Tokyo… But why…?”
With her eyes now locked on her cup of coffee, a sad smile slowly crept up on Rena’s face, “It’s because of me… Jurina and I used to be as close as siblings in the past, until her mother decided to take me in after my parents died from a car accident… Of course, I tried to refuse at first. I’m already 20 years-old, I can take care of myself already, but her mother insisted.”
“Eh? She’s running away just because you’re moving in with them?.” Sashihara, who was eaves dropping all along instead of keeping her eyes at the door for new customers commented, her brows narrowed down to the middle as she moved closer towards Yuki and Rena, “Please don’t mind me and continue.” She said as she crawled under their table.
Though a little bit confused as to why Sashihara just hid herself under their table, Rena shook her head and continued, “That’s not it. You see, my auntie- Jurina’s mother… ever since I moved into their house… Started comparing Jurina with me… She kept on saying how it would have been better if I was her daughter instead of Jurina- that I was far better because I knew how to cook and do the chores correctly… She said such horrible words in front of Jurina… In front of her guests… In front of everyone she knew… After some time, Jurina had enough of it and ran away from home…”
Yuki, speechless after hearing how Jurina’s mother was like, could only do nothing but turn her head down- only to see Sashihara under their table, sitting comfortably there while reading a message on her phone, the writer facepalmed afterward. This girl… Can’t she read the atmosphere at all? What is she doing there anyway?
“Jeez, that’s sure one cruel mother there.” Sashihara spoke again after snapping her phone close and poking her head out a little, “Even my Mom’s not like that on me- even though she keeps on saying how I’m super ugly compared to my favorite idols. Ah- by the way, I’m Sashihara Rino, but you can call me Sasshi for short, pleased to meet you, Matsui Rena… Right? Sorry if I’ve been eavesdropping.”
Once again, Yuki face palmed. Is this waitress some sort of an idiot? Even though they were in the middle of a serious conversation, she suddenly jumped in their conversation like this- and now introduced herself to Rena as though she hasn’t done anything weird such as crawling under their table at all. Unbelievable.
“It’s alright…” Rena smiled a little. Thankfully, this girl’s an angel. Yuki sighed.
“So, what are you planning to do, Rena-chan? You didn’t possibly follow her all the way here to Tokyo without a plan, right? I might help you out or something.” The young waitress grinned proudly.
“I was planning to tell her that she can go back home at ease now. I’ll be living here in Tokyo instead and stay away from her life- so that her mother would stop comparing us together.”
All of the sudden, a loud sigh escaped from Sashihara’s lips, “You sure don’t understand youngsters, Rena-chan.”
And what on earth do you know about them, you creepy wota… Yuki pursed her own lips into a thin line, clearly not amused at Sashihara’s act. Lifting her hand up, the writer slapped the waitress at the back of her head, “Idiot, can you stop acting like a know-it-all, Sasshi? Suddenly jumping into our conversation like this… Why on earth were you crawling under our table earlier anyway?”
“Hey, that hurt!” the said waitress pouted a little, “I was crawling there because I was trying to hide from someone, obviously. But thankfully, she decided to spare me today.” Her pout soon turned into an idiotic smile again, “So anyway, as I was saying, there must be another reason as to why she ran away- I mean, sure, I myself would get upset from being compared at with someone else, but to run away just because of that? Unthinkable.”
“What do you mean?” Rena slightly leaned closer to Sashihara.
“Something smells fishy about this Jurina girl- obviously; she didn’t run away because of you, Rena-chan, but for another reason…” A playful smile slowly rose up on the wota’s face, “And I’ll help you find out what that ‘other reason’ is.”
Oh boy… With a sigh leaving her lips, Yuki gently placed her hand against her forehead. I’m starting to get a headache because of you… Sasshi.
“The café’s going to be close tomorrow, and at the same time, Mayu’s going to meet up with this Jurina girl in Akihabara. Believe me- I heard them talk outside the café earlier before Jurina left.”
“Don’t you have anything else better to do other than eavesdropping, Sasshi?”
“It’s a skill, Yukirin, a skill! I can’t help it if I can magically hear interesting conversations without knowing it.” Still smiling, Sashihara pulled out her phone, “Continuing from where I left… Tomorrow, the three of us will tail them- as far as I have observed, Jurina and Mayuyu’s actually starting to become close friends despite the fact that they just met… You never know, she might share something interesting to her- like… Why she ran away from home.”
How on earth is eavesdropping a skill? Yuki’s lips arched down into a frown.
“How can you be so sure that it’s really not because of me though?”
With her index finger pointing up, Sashihara shook it left and right, “Tsk, tsk, tsk… Don’t underestimate the power of my instincts, Rena-chan. believe me in this. For now, why don’t we share our mail addresses so we can send each other some messages for tomorrow’s meeting?”
“Are you really sure that your instinct’s not just toying you around, Sasshi?” still feeling a little bit sketchy about it, Yuki hesitantly pulled out her phone.
“I’m positive. Anyway, you’re okay with the plan right, Rena-chan?”
A nod, “I’m free tomorrow, so I suppose it’s fine…”
“Then tomorrow, we shall commence operation ‘Find out the Truth’ without delay.”
Why am I getting dragged into this… Dropping her head down a little, a sigh soon left from Yuki’s lips for the nth time of the day.
LOL, Like I said, this chapter is short... and stupid
But with this, I think I'm going to start the 'Unexpected' part of this story. After all, its title IS 'Unexpected'.
Wait... Did that even make any sense? "orz Please let me pass for writing so short in this chapter...
