Chapter 8
“And so…” Yuki pressed her lips into a line tightly before letting out a sigh, her eyes soon locking themselves towards the girl who was already wearing a cat-like ears hair band being handed to them, “Can you please explain why we are here in a maid café, Sashihara? Most of all will you please stop saying Nyan again and again?!”
A huge frown appeared on the young wota’s features, her hand which she raised up while imitating a cat dropping down to her side. “Well, since we’re already here I thought that we might as well enjoy ourselves…” She pouted a little with her lips puckered out, “I don’t see anything wrong with that at all~ Jeez, stop being so grumpy Yukirin, it’ll make you grow old faster, you know. Right, Rena?” grinning once again, she turned to the girl sitting uncomfortably on the chair just beside her. “Rena-chan?” Hearing no response, Sashihara waved her hand in front of her.
Still receiving nothing from Rena, both Sashihara and Yuki lifted their brows up, slowly turning their head to the direction where Rena was so busy staring at, only to notice that it was on one of the maids in the café. “Ohoo~ Do you fancy shy girls like her, Rena~?” A mischievous smirk rose on the Wota’s face again, “Should I call her over? The Maids here are okay with being called over for no good reason you know~ maybe you can ask her number if you want.” Her smirk grew even more, especially after seeing how red Rena’s face had become.
“A-Ah, no, no, please don’t!” Rena hurriedly shook her hands in front of her, “I just thought that she looked oddly familiar that’s all, you don’t have to call her over…”
“The more reason why I should!” Sashihara’s smirk soon turned into a wide grin, “What if it really is someone you know? A childhood friend? Long lost lover? Or even your lover in your past life and now you have this feeling of déjà vu after meeting he--?! Ow!” Unable to finish whatever she was planning to say, the poor Wota let out a cry in pain, her hand hurriedly rubbing the back of her head.
“Stop that, Sasshi, we’re not here to play around.” The writer frowned while rubbing her now aching knuckles, thanks to Sashihara’s hard head. “Most of all, you haven’t answered my question yet. Why are we here in a maid café? Aren’t we supposed to follow Mayu and that Center girl today? I don’t see them here anywhere at all.” She scanned her eyes around once again, and sure enough, there was no sight of Mayu or even the said Center girl.
As though she had immediately recovered from Yuki’s painful smack on her head, Sashihara smiled yet again, “Tsk, tsk, tsk… Don’t underestimate me, Yukirin.” She shook her index finger, “Mayu sent me a mail last night asking for a nice place to hang out in, and I told her that this one is the best. Of course, she immediately agreed, she’s been here more than once already after all, so I’m sure she’ll come here sometime soon.”
Yuki’s frown grew even more, if ever that was possible, “And what if they don’t?”
“Then we go to her favorite Danso Café! It’s either here or there, but I’m betting here since I know that she doesn’t want her new friend to see her fangirlish side over them crossdressers.” She nodded her head confidently, smirking ever so smugly while rubbing her invisible beard, “Ah-! There they are! Try not to take their attention!” she immediately hissed as soon as she heard the café’s door open, revealing Mayu and her friend, Jurina behind it.
The three of them hurriedly lifted their menus up, hiding half of their faces with it as they watched the two of them search for a seat. Lucky for the trio, Mayu and Jurina decided to take the table behind them, with their backs facing them. With this, they can eavesdrop on whatever they are going to talk about without being spotted. God must be on their side today. For the first time, Yuki thought.
“Order whatever you want, Center~” Mayu said in a very innocent and cheerful tone, giving Yuki the chills down to her spine as a result. Especially after seeing the smile on the otaku’s face through the window’s reflection, “It must be your first time here, right? No need to hold yourself back though. When Sasshi and I first came here together, she started yelling out like crazy when one of the maids began singing, I was really embarrassed by then… But apparently such a thing is normal here now.”
Hearing that, Yuki slowly shifted her attention from Mayu to Sashihara, and just as what she expected, the Wota had a silly smile plastered on her face that clearly said ‘She’s talking about me! I’m so proud of myself’. The writer let out a sigh.
“Really?” Jurina finally replied while smiling, her eyes shining as though she was now interested on doing the same thing Sashihara did, “That sure sounds fun…” she trailed off, her eyes now locked on the menu in her hand as she flipped from one page to another, her cat-like smile still on her face as she did so.
Mayu began scanning on the menu in her hand as well, nodding her head with a ‘un’ before continuing on, “It really is fun with Sasshi around, especially in places like this. Maybe we should bring her the next time we come here? Ah, but before that, I’ll have to introduce you to her.”
She sure sounds enthusiastic talking about Sasshi… Too enthusiastic…. Yuki half closed her eyes at the thought, frowning a little before taking a sip of the iced tea she ordered earlier. Turning her head back to Mayu, she swore she saw the girl glance back at her for a second, though it could just be her imagination, the otaku just continued on talking with her so called ‘Center’ after all.
After a few more minutes of chatting with each other, the duo finally decided on what to order and called the shy maid Rena was staring at earlier over, telling her their orders like kids in a restaurant for the first time with their eyes shining so brightly; enough to even make Yuki blind for a second or two. After taking their orders, the two of them went as far as waving their hands as they watched the maid walk away.
“She sure looks cute, huh?” Mayu said out of nowhere while still waving. Hearing no response from her friend, she turned her head to her. “Center?”
“A-Ah,” Jurina blinked repeatedly for a few times before giving off her cat-like smile and scratching the back of her head apologetically, “Sorry, I just thought she looked familiar and kind of lost in thought… Ahaha… B-But yeah! She does look cute.”
Hearing Sashihara let out a hum, both Yuki and Rena turned their heads to her, “Weird...” The wota muttered quietly, “Didn’t Rena-chan say that earlier too? Maybe you really do know her Rena! A childhood friend, maybe? Do you remember befriending someone who looks like her in the past?”
Rena furrowed her brows down while furrowing her brows down, humming as well as she gave it some thought, “I can’t be sure… I mean, I did have to part with some of my friends when I had to move from one place to another thanks to my parents’ work, but I don’t know… I was still a kid back then so I don’t remember their faces anymore. I’m sorry, Sashihara-san.” She bowed her head down a little.
“Sasshi’s fine. You sound too formal and it makes me sound old!”
“You are old,” Yuki muttered to herself, though it was loud enough for the Wota to hear, “Also, keep your voice down, their only behind us, you know, they can hear us any time and turn around only to discover that we’re here.” She immediately added before Sashihara could talk, knowing well that the girl was bound to yell instead of talking normally.
“I know that, jeez.” Sashihara could only pout in defeat.
Feeling her stomach churn all of the sudden Yuki silently cursed the tea she drank earlier, having no other idea on who she should blame it on other than the innocent drink.
“I’ll go to the toilet for a second.” She muttered out quietly while watching Sashihara busy herself with listening at Mayu’s casual talks about her and Rena locking her eyes worriedly on Jurina. Sighing, she stood up and made her way to the toilet, missing what Mayu said just when she stood up.
“Someone’s calling my phone, sorry” Mayu excused herself with her hand pressed together and a quick bow of her head before heading to the toilet.
--
Breathing out a heavy sigh while rubbing her stomach, Yuki walked over to where the sink was, washing her hand there with an obviously unhappy face plastered on her face, “I wonder what those maids placed in my soda…” she muttered to herself as she pulled out some tissue from the dispenser not far from the sink, wiping her hand with it. Placing her hand back to her stomach afterward, the writer let out a sigh yet again, dropping her head down at the same time. So much for having God on her side.
“So…” hearing that familiar mischievous voice, Yuki immediately lifted her head up, her eyes widening a little before her right brow twitched a little in irritation as soon as she saw who it was through the mirror, “How’s the game of stalking, Stalker-san?” the young girl continue before smiling at her, making the already annoyed writer even more annoyed.
Knowing that there was no use lying, she let out a sigh in defeat, “So, you knew all along?”
“I’m sure you saw me glance at you while I was talking with Center?” Mayu smiled victoriously, making Yuki narrow her eyes at her in response.
No, it’s still too early for her to announce Mayu’s victory. There’s still chance. Yuki exhaled calmly, “Yeah, I did. But I thought that it was just my imagination… But now that it’s all out, do you want us to leave the two of you alone then?” Not that she would, Yuki smiled inwardly. Even if Mayu would say yes, Yuki was more than sure that Sashihara would find a way to tail the two of them again, even if they’re already out of the café.
“Nope. Instead, I want you to tell me something…”
Knowing that the little imp was up to no good, Yuki frowned.
--
“Oh, Yukirin, welcome back.” Sashihara immediately greeted as soon as she saw Yuki approaching them with her usual blank look on, leaning closer to her afterward before whispering, “You didn’t bump on Mayu on your way out of the toilet, did you? She did go there after you left… So I was kind of worried that she might have found out about our stalking or something… So, did you?”
As usual, this girl talks too much. Yuki thought to herself before shaking her head, “Mayu went there? I never knew… Maybe she was in one of the cubicles when I was heading out?” she pursed her lips into a thin line. She lied, that’s for sure. But she had no other choice but to do so,
“Ah, that’s a relief then. God really is on our side today.” Immediately buying Yuki’s lie like the idiot she was, Sashihara immediately grinned, “Mayu’s coming. Act normal!”
You don’t have to tell us that, idiot. Yuki frowned even more, but decided not to voice it out as she shifted her gaze from Sashihara to Mayu. Their eyes met for a second, accompanied with a slight nod of their heads.
--
”Tell me, Yukirin. Why are you three here, obviously stalking us?” Mayu’s smile suddenly turned into a frown, clearly disturbed at the fact that she and Jurina were being watched on by the three.
Seeing Mayu’s sudden change of mood, Yuki once again let out a sigh. Just how many times does she have to sigh today? “Center, your friend… Actually ran away from home. And Rena, my close friend, is actually her cousin. Sashihara concluded that there’s something fishy about Jurina’s running away from home, so she said that we should come stalk the two of you in hopes of finding the reason why.”
What am I being honest for? Yuki thought to herself.
“Center… Ran away from home?” Mayu lifted her brows up in surprise,
“You didn’t know?”
“No… Oh wait… I think she said something along those lines when we had a quick chat last night…”
“Why don’t you help us?”
Her brows dropped down immediately, her lips slightly opened as she looked at the older girl before her in surprise, “Huh?” she tilted her head, poking her finger in her ear afterward, “Sorry, I must be hearing things,” she pulled it out, “Can you say that again?”
This girl… Mocking me like this… Yuki frowned even more, “Why don’t you help us, Mayu?” she repeated.
“Oh… Oh sure, why not?” She grinned again.
--
Mayu sat down again after saying a quick sorry to her friend, “Sorry about that, a friend of mine was asking on how to operate the computer. She’s a total newbie when it comes to technology.”
What a bad lie. Yuki thought to herself before picking up Sashihara's soda, knowing fully well that her Iced Tea was poisoned- well, not poisoned, but she was sure that the maids placed something in it. Taking a quick sip on it, Yuki continued on eavesdropping along with the other two.
“Ah, it’s okay.” Being the kind girl she was, Jurina immediately shrugged it off with a smile.
While Sasshi talks too much, this girl smiles too much… Once again, Yuki thought to herself, I really should stop thinking badly on other people, she added.
“By the way, Jurina…”
“Yes?” Completely oblivious of what was happening, Jurina removed her eyes from one of the café’s magazine and shifted it to Mayu, smiling at her innocently once again.
“Last night… You said you ran away from home, right?”
Hearing Mayu’s question, Yuki, Sashihara and Rena turned their heads to each other, eyes wide with Sashihara smiling happily as she leaned her head closer to the two so she could hear more clearly. Even though Yuki knew that this was coming, she could still feel herself getting excited to know the reason as to why. Rena, however, remained quiet while listening to the two.
“Would you mind telling me why?”
Yuki cleared her throat as she continued on listening. Here it comes, the answer the three of them have been waiting for…
“W-Well…” They could hear the young girl talk reluctantly, “Do you remember the girl your friend claimed as her close friend?”
She’s not going to say that we’re not actually close friends, is she!? remembering her lie, Yuki stiffened a little, though she tried to hide it, knowing that Mayu was looking at her now even though she had her back facing at the younger girl.
“Rena, I mean…”
“Yeah, What about her?” Trying to be as patient as she can, Mayu continued on her act, lifting her brows up in hopes that it would make her acting more convincing.
“Sh-she’s my cousin… But…”
“But..?” She leaned her head closer.
“…But one day I realized how much I like her...”
