It started with last year's NY drama Rika was in (like the one Takahashi was in this year). Rika sent Takahashi pics of her in the costume, and Takahashi replied calling Rika "Rika-dono". And they've been calling each other like that since. It's a misuse of word, though, because Dono means mister, I think.

i think -dono is a honorific title you use for someone of high respect. it's more polite than -san or -kun i think. if you ever watch samurai x you'll notice himura calling kaoru, kaoru-dono so probably the gender doesn't matter..
