Assuming that Idoling!!! gets an Oricon #3 ranking for this single, I was curious how they compared to other popular idol groups whose names do not end with '48':

Over the past three singles, no group has performed better than Idoling!!!, and if you count all singles over the past two years, only S☆G is slightly better (perhaps because sample size is smaller since they are a newer group). Neither Berryz nor MCZ has gotten #2 before, and Passpo☆ really fell off a cliff after getting a (dubious?) #1 ranking for their first single (their last three singles - #3, #17, #11). And we are not even considering other groups like 9nine and Tokyo Joshiryu who are supposed to be popular in their own right, but yet struggle to crack the top 10 rankings.

In other words, one can make a pretty good case that Idoling!!! is already the de facto top idol group outside of the '48' groups, strictly based on Oricon sales rankings. What really alludes them is a #1 Oricon ranking, which is incredibly difficult to come by for an idol group nowadays unless you are being produced by Aki-P.

Can I just point out one thing which I feel is relevant. The rank of a single is completely irrelevant, in the sense that it doesn't say anything about actual sales or popularity. You can get a #1 by selling 27K copies (WH - Akkanbe Bashi) if there are no other popular artists releasing anything in that week, but you can also get a weekly #3 while selling 100K copies (MM - One Two Three) if the competition is tough during that week.

For example, Momoiro Clover Z may have a lower average rank but their last three singles sold 40K, 40K and 67K which is pretty good.

But yeah, I get your point. Compared to the other idol groups you mentioned they're doing quite well. Idoling was even outselling Morning Musume, but they seemed to have bounced back with their latest single. In the tier below the groups you mentioned there are units like Afilia Saga East who are happy to break 5~10K, so yeah, not bad at all. However, saying they are 'the best of the rest' based on rankings isn't the whole story.

Realistically speaking it's probably safe to say that both Momoclo and Super Girls have surpassed Idoling though, (as well as Morning Musume which oddly isn't in the comparison chart above.) and that's obviously not good. One thing though about Idoling is that they are a very steady group, while the other groups are quite volatile.

The blitzkrieg marketing seemed to have not worked based on 1st day sales figure, this just might be the very first tangible sign that Idoling is facing a real dilemma and the management has to look in the mirror and confront it. I honestly thought the fancy marketing might compensate for the extra sales they made from the voting last time, but it may be difficult to even match Mamore!!! at current pace.

I think it's a waste of an effort to even try to go up against 48 groups right now because for one they don't compete in a fair way to begin with and they have all the ammo/firepower on their side, so hopefully the staff and the management would pick themselves up and concentrate more on making the product itself better instead of focusing on getting the top prize all the time.

I think Idoling!!! should indeed be lucky to keep getting top 3.
By ranking alone, Idoling!!! has always been in top 10, except for the first single which was at #13. (not counting the FuriFuri/BanBan/.. singles)
By sales, they have always had at least 10k, Meniwa Aoba was above 20k, and after that all singles were above 30k consistenly.
From what I read in the previous posts, other non-48/non-MM idol groups seem to either hardly get to 10,20,30k sales, have difficulty reaching top 10, or are very inconsistent with big differences in sales and rankings between singles (although I would like to see numbers for all of that), Idoling!!! should indeed be lucky to be so consistent.

Just by first day sales, they're already at 29k, that's bound to pass the 30k mark tomorrow, so we may still reach the 40k mark by the end of the oricon week.
The big marketing may still have some after-effects on the 2nd or 3rd day, we'll see how big the drop is tomorrow...

(side note: seems like oricon has recently changed something on the single rankings, no sales data is shown any more for the top 10 older than 1 week. This must be a recent change from the last 2-3 weeks.)

I think One Up!!! is actually a good song, not the best Idoling!!! song ever but still a very good one, way better than what NMB48 ever released. Even Ichigo Gyuunyuu and the two c/w are pretty enjoyable.

Idoling!!! obviously has the potential to reach 70 000+ sales just like SUPER GiRLS with their latest single, but maybe for that they need more events.

Well then i have to say congratolations for Idoling!!! and their management for alll their hard work so far. For me OU/IG was a fair song (although not the best), with good package (cover photo, PV). At some point i see that MAMORE!!! was a better song than this, its sales proved it all. Maybe their management have to "speed-up" promotion to make it better, this is just first day, still days more.

About Idol world competition nowadays, i have to say there are a lot of surprises this year. 48-groups are no surprises, because they are already enjoy its "golden-era", maybe up to 5-years from now on. They are national idols, japan representation in terms of idols. No doubt about it. What surprise me is the rising of Momoclo & Super Girls, and comeback of Momusu. In my Perspective, Idoling!!! also rise up this year with MAMORE!!!, but compare to them (momoclo, SG, Momusu) I think they still lack of popularity.

I saw that Momoclo, SG & Momusu often shown in TV or variety, guest on popular tv-show, etc. Maybe this is crucial factor to become popular, personally and also their group. IMO Idoling just have Amimi who often seen in TV. Beside that Idoling seemed to be a "exclusive" fuji-TV group. I knew that their policy which make it hard for them to explore more. I glad that their 12th live will be stage on NHK hall. Also i glad that many of their member often show in TV/programs (Maipuru for example)

In the end, for us Idolinger!!! no other words that we have to keep support them.

You're supposed to pay/get a license from Oricon to use their data or to get it in a easy format (like excel), blabla...
But I had actually started a "little" project some months ago to get all oricon data off of their site, and I have a few years of data (only singles weekly though, until january 2007, I hadn't gone further yet), but I don't update it regularly which is why I now have a gap in july for top 10 because of their latest change with the top 10 sales. I can already generate a graph, but I need to do some updates for all the other idol groups.
So you want just the total sales of each single, not weekly sales?

Some interesting trivia I see on my graph, Mujouken☆Koufuku is the only single to chart for 4 weeks (#5, #42, #48, #34), all other singles only chart for 1-2 weeks.

They might not a boom yet but definitely getting more popular.
We can't compare this single to MAMORE!!! because of the voting ticket, plus this time they do less 個別握手会 compared to previous singles.
But yeah, looking at the publicity this time, it is pretty disappointing result.

There are many fans outside of Tokyo having difficulty to find any CDs at their local stores, even as big as Tsutaya.
I really wish they change to Avex for better marketing.

AKB48 Matsui Sakiko had to go twice to CD store because of A and B type were sold out first day. Pretty good sales for 1600/2000 yen price tag single.
