Sunflowers Blooming in the Night Sky
The sky was so bright that day..Yet, Yuko felt that her day was so dark..
--The last day before summer vacation. During PE class –
“Ohaayyoouuu~ Yukoooo” Milky came to Yuko who was sitting on the gymnasium floor.
“Ohayou, Milky” Yuko said unenthusiastically.
Milky sit next to Yuko “Ara? What’s wrong with you, Yuko? The summer vacation is almost come!”
Yuko stared at gymnasium’s ceiling
“What’s wrong with me?” Yuko thought
Summer vacation..Something that all student in Japan waiting for, except for Oshima Yuko. Vacation mean do not go to school. And that’s means she wouldn’t meet Haruna. Just thinking about that already made Yuko felt that her life would be miserable.
“Because you won’t be meet Haruna during vacation?”
“Un” Yuko nodded in reflex. She then looked Milky with huge surprise “Ehh?! How do you know?!”
“Hahahahaha!!” Milky burst out a loud laugh.
Yuko pinched Milky’s arm “Stop laughing! Did Sayanee said something to you?” As far as Yuko knew, she only told about Haruna to Milky’s girlfriend.
After a while, finally Milky could stop her laughter “Sayanee didn’t say anything to me. But, do you know, Yuko? You and Haruna are so obvious.”
“Obvious?”
“For example, the way you starring at each other, smiling at each other.” Milky leaned her face closer to Yuko “Did you already confess to her? Did both of you already dating officially?”
“Well, about that..” Yuko felt confused how to answered Milky’s question
“Don’t tell me that you haven’t confessed to Haruna?”
“Not officially confessed but I asked her whether okay for me to like her and she said yes..”
Milky looked at Yuko with surprise look “That’s all?!”
“Yes..”
“So, Yuko is type of person who became coward when falling in love?”
“I’m not a coward. I’ll ask Haruna to go to fireworks festival tomorrow night.”
“Ahh, Sayane and I will go to that festival too.”
“Let’s make it into double date!”
Suddenly, Milky remembered something..
“Hey, Yuko. It seems like you have some problem here.”
“Heh?”
“One, Don’t you know that Haruna doesn’t like crowd of people? Two, Haruna doesn’t like watching fireworks. She never goes to fireworks festival. Three, are you sure she’ll accept your invitation? ”
“She doesn’t like fireworks?! Ah, what should I do?” Yuko scratched her head. “I want to go to fireworks festival with Haruna”
“Just like you said. You go ask Haruna”
“But you said she doesn’t like fireworks.”
“Yuko, if someone that you really like ask you to go to some place that you don’t like, will you accept or reject her invitation?”
Yuko thought Milky’s words.
“Ne, Milky~ I think I need your help”
“What is it?”
Yuko whispered something to Milky.
“Eh?? Are you sure?”
“100 percent!”
“Okay, I’ll help you”
Finally Yuko’s first smiled for that day was appeared on her face. She hugged Milky “Arigatou, Milky!!”
*cough* *cough*
Hearing someone’s cough sound, Yuko broke the hug and asked Milky “Ne, Milky you were just coughing. Are you sick?”
Milky shook her head “I am not coughing. I thought it was you..”
Yuko tilted her head and confused “If it wasn’t you and me, then who?”
“I am the one who’s just coughing!”
Yuko and Milky looked at their back and saw an athletic woman, who was their PE teacher, was standing with her arms crossed and deadly glare.
“Akimoto Sayaka-sensei!!!”
"Hey, both of you! Why you just sit down there while all of your friends doing exercise?!"
Yuko and Milky stood up and bowed "I'm sorry, sensei!"
"There’s no need to say sorry. Both of you will get punishment!"
"What?!"
-After school. In gymnasium-
Yuko and Milky were lying on the floor. Their faces were covered with sweat.
"Yada yo! I want to go home now.." Yuko said with her depressed look.
Milky’s face expression wasn’t better that Yuko "Me too. Why that gorilla commanded us to clean this gymnasium? I even almost never clean my own bedroom."
"What a spoiled ojou-sama.." Yuko thought
Yuko woke up and said “C’mon, Milky. Let’s continue our task. We haven’t finished clean this building.”
Milky gave no response to Yuko. She just laid on the floor "I want to see Sayanee.."
"I want to meet Haruna.." Speaking about Haruna, Yuko suddenly remembered something "ahh, i forget!!"
"What?"
"I have to meet Haruna now. I have to ask her to watch the fireworks.."
Milky stood up and sulked "Ehh, what about me? I don't want to clean this building alone!"
"C'mon milky..I want to- "
"You can send message to Haruna"
"But, i want to see Haruna' face. I'm sorry, Milky. I have to go now. I'll come back here after my business is done"
"Hey,Yuko! Wait!" Milky grabbed Yuko's hand “Don’t leave me alone! I’m afraid being alone!”
"Milky! Yuko!" Suddenly, a girl shouted from the gymnasium door.
"Sayanee~ Haruna~" Milky’s eyes were sparkling seeing her girlfriend and cousin.
“Ehh, Haruna??” Yuko still couldn’t believe with her vision.
Sayanee and Haruna walked toward the two punished girl. Milky hug her girlfriend. Sayanee hug Milky back and patted her head.
"You like the punishment?" Sayanee teased Milky
Milky pouted "Mou~ Sayanee.."
Yuko asked Haruna “Haruna, why you come here?”
“I heard from Sayanee that you and Milky are being punished so I come here with Sayanee. I think maybe I can help you..” Haruna said with her angelic smile.
Hearing Haruna’s words, Milky suddenly had an idea "Ne~ Haruna, can you do me a favor?"
"What?"
"I have to go to somewhere with Sayanee, can you help Yuko to finish cleaning this place?"
Haruna nodded “Sure..”
Yuko "Ehhh??!!! "
“Yatta! Haruna is so kind~” Milky couldn’t hide her happiness. Before Yuko could say anything, Milky grabbed Sayanee’s hand and both of them run outward gymnasium, leaving Haruna and Yuko alone.
“So, what can I help?” Haruna asked Yuko
“No. I- I can clean the gymnasium alone..”
“No way! Look! Your face is sweating. You must be tired” Haruna pointed at Yuko’s face
Yuko touched her face with both of her palms and cursed within herself
“Holy shit! My face must be looked horrible..” “It must be because the weather! Summer is so hot, right?” Yuko wiped the sweat on her forehead with her t’shirt sleeve.
“Holy doly shit! I hope my sweat doesn’t make my body smell bad.”
Haruna looked around and said “First, I’ll help you move those boxes over there, okay?” She walked toward corner of the building. When she was about to lift one of the boxes, Yuko’s hand blocked Haruna from lifting it. Haruna looked at Yuko who shook her head
Yuko said “A princess like you don’t deserve to do this kind of thing..”
“Princess?” Haruna repeated Yuko’s word that caught her ear. But it seemed like Yuko didn’t pay attention to what Haruna just said
“Leave it to me. I can do this on my own”
Getting tired of Yuko’s persistency to work alone, Haruna looked at Yuko’s eyes deeply and rise her voice tone “Oshima Yuko, let me help you or do..no..ever..think..of..me..as..your..friend.”
Surprised with Haruna’s action, Yuko just said “O-..O-..Okay..”
Two hours later…
“Yokatta! Finally we’re done!!” Haruna said happily as she sit on the floor in one of the corner of gymnasium. Next to her was Yuko who dropped her body to the floor like a boneless person. Haruna just giggled seeing Yuko’s antic.
Hearing Haruna’s giggle, Yuko asked “What’s the funny thing?”
“I can’t imagine if you do this job alone. You should be thankful to me.”
“Arigatooouuu~” Yuko sounded like a dying person
“Just saying thank you?” Haruna pretended to be disappointed
Yuko woke up from her position and sit, with her back against the wall, next to Haruna. She looked at Haruna “Then what do you want?”
Haruna suddenly blushed. She looked away from Yuko’s gaze and shook her head “Nothing..”
“……….”
“……….”
Ten minutes were passed without any of them spoke anything. Yuko looked at her wristwatch. She had made up her mind. She got up her sit and stood in front of Haruna who still comfortable with her sitting position.
Haruna looked up at Yuko “What?”
“Please watch the fireworks tomorrow night with me..”
Haruna turn her sight onto the floor. She thought for a while before nodded her head.
Seeing Haruna’s respone, Yuko couldn’t hide her super bright smile.
“It’s getting dark outside. I- I should go home now” Haruna said nervously. She got up and grabbed her bag.
“And thankyou. For helping me. And…For accepting my invitation”
“I’m glad..” Haruna half-whispered
“Eh?”
“Oh, never mind. I think I’m going now. Bye, Yuko” Haruna hurriedly walked toward the exit door.
Yuko just watched Haruna’s back who eventually disappeared for her eyes sight
“In moment like this, she likes to runaway, huh?”

Milky and Haruna were sit on the back seat of the car. The driver drove the car to the promised place.
“Eh, to your Papa’s hotel? I thought we’re going to the festival, Milky?” Haruna asked in surprised.
Watanabe Miruki, the only children of the owner of Watanabe Hotel. One of the most luxurious hotel in the Japan. The hotel was located in center of the city, where the fireworks festival took place.
Milky giggled “I told Yuko that you don’t like fireworks and people crowd. And she asked my help to access to the hotel rooftop”
“Ehh, Yuko knew?”
Milky nodded “Yes! And what was made me more surprised is that you accept Yuko’s invitation..”
They arrived at the hotel parking ground, went out of the car and walked toward the lift.
Haruna and Milky entered the lift. Milky pushed a button which would lead them to the 30th floor. Haruna looked nervous and fixed her bangs.
Milky could hold her laughter “Don’t worry, Haruna. You are stunning tonight. Even if you do not take a bath and just wear pajama, you will always looks beautiful in Yuko’s eyes”
Haruna hit Milky’s arm “Don’t tease me!”
Finally the lift door was opened. Milky grabbed Haruna’s hand “Hurry up, they were waiting above!” Both of walked to a staircases which would lead them to the rooftop.
“Oii! Sorry for making you wait!” Milky said cheerfully when she and Haruna had reached the roof top. Both of them walked closer to the place where Sayanee and Yuko stood up.
“Oh My! She’s shining brighter than the moon and the stars tonight!” Yuko thought whe she saw Haruna
“Sayanee~” Milky’s instinct was to hug her girlfriend..
“Haha, Milky.You hug me too tightly” Sayanee said without had any intention to broke the hug.
*cough* *cough*
Yuko let out a fake cough. Milky looked at Yuko who gave her a wink. Milky got the signal.
“Sayanee, I have a gift for you” Milky said to her girlfriend
“Gift? What gift?”
“I put in in my car. I forget to bring it with me” Milky took Sayanee’s hand “C’mon, let’s go to the car. I’m going to show you the gift”
“I don’t remember you bring any gift in the car, Milky” Haruna frowned in confused.
“Ehh? Ahhh, about that..” Milky looked confused to answered Haruna. She lied about the gift.
“Maybe Haruna just didn’t see it, right Milky?” Yuko tried to help Milky
“Hohoho…Yes! That’s right! You’re clever, Yuko. It’s Haruna who didn’t see it.We’re going now. But, we’ll be back..C’mon, Sayanee..”
It was just Haruna and Yuko on the rooftop now..
Both of them stood up next to each other on the edge of the building. There’s wall ,which ± 1 meter in height, surrounded the rooftop.
While waiting for Milky and Sayanee to came back, they were chatting. They were talking about school, friends, and what their plan in spending the holidays. Haruna would visited her grandparents in Okinawa while Yuko said that she wanted to do part-time job during holidays.
*beep* *beep*
Haruna’s phone vibrated. She read the message which was sent by Milky.
Haruna! Sayane and I decide to attend the fireworks festival. So, we will be back later. I Hope you’ll enjoy the fireworks with Yuko.. peace ^^v “ehh?!”
“What?”
“Sayanee and Milky go to the festival..”
“Ah, it can’t be helped. They want to spend this night together.” Yuko said.
“Yeah. So, let’s watch the fireworks here…” Haruna put back her phone inside her pocket and looked at Yuko “…The two of us”
Hearing the words ‘the two of us’ made Yuko’s heart beat fast..
“I’m glad that you come here. ” Yuko smiled and said to Haruna
“Why you asked me to watch the fireworks together?”
“Because I want to watch it with you.”
“Although you know that I don’t like fireworks?”
“Yes.”
Yuko turn her sight into the night sky “I love fireworks. When I was a child I always went to fireworks festival every year with my parents. Starting from junior high school, I went to the festival with my friends. And this summer, when I thought about which person I wanted to watch the fireworks with, Haruna is the only one that came to my mind. Even though I knew you don’t like it, but I really want to see it with Haruna.”
Hearing Yuko’s words made Haruna’s heart beat in uncontrollable rhythms.
“I know I’m selfish. But, when you agreed to watch it with me, I felt so grateful. You know, I had prepared myself if you reject me. Ne Haruna, why you don’t like fireworks?”
“Maybe because it comes and goes so fast. It explodes in the sky and then extinguish in the blink of an eye.”
“So, that’s why. I’m sorry if you feel that you are forced to-”
“Don’t say that. I think I may to start liking the fireworks..”
Yuko looked at Haruna “Ehh?”
*BANG!*
Haruna watched and pointed at the sky “Yuko, Look! The fireworks session is started”
*BANG!*
Yuko looked at the night sky. “Yatta!”
Yuko snuggled toward Haruna. Her right hand grabbed Haruna’s left hand and intertwined their finger.
“So beautiful..” Yuko said
“Ye- Yeah!” Haruna surprised with Yuko’s sudden intimate action. She looked at Yuko who was busy watching at the fireworks. Haruna felt something. A feeling that she couldn’t describe. A mixed feeling of happiness, grateful, kindness, and warmness. A feeling that made her smile and didn’t want to let go Yuko’s hand.
The fireworks appeared and extinguished..The darkness of the night sky had turn into colorful light.
“Wow, the fireworks is amazing.” Haruna said in mesmerized
Yuko turn her head to Haruna and asked “Do you like it?”
Haruna looked at Yuko and answered “I like it so much!”
Both of them starred at each other “I want to watch summer fireworks next year with you again. And a year later..and two years later..and three years after..and many years later. Would you?”
Haruna didn’t get what Yuko mean..
Yuko took a deep breath and under the sky which was filled with fireworks she confessed to Haruna “I love you, Haruna. Please be my girlfriend”
Haruna looked at the small girl next to her. She can feel sincerity in her words. She smiled and said “Yes, I want to be your girlfriend”
Yuko felt happy. So happy that she felt like there’s fireworks exploded within her chest. Yuko put herself closer to Haruna, tip-toed, and stole a quick kiss from Haruna’s lips. Yuko smiled seeing Haruna blushed so hard after the kiss.
“Thankyou, Haruna..”
Haruna nodded shyly “Un..”
“I hope you won’t change your mind..I’ll make you like the fireworks”
“Honestly, starting today, I love fireworks..”
“What?”
“I was wrong. Fireworks are not just something that exploded and extinguish in blink of an eye. The most important is the feeling when you watch it with someone that you love. Thank you for making me realize this thing, Yuko.”
Hearing Haruna’s words made Yuko’s eyes watery “Haruna…”
Haruna laughed. She looked at the sky “Let’s continue watch the fireworks..The time for fireworks session is almost over..”
Yuko nodded “yes..”
That night, Yuko’s and Haruna’s love grew like sunflowers bloom in summer. That night, the sunflowers which blooming in the night sky became the witness of their love…
