I'm relieved that the Joe Buck late night variety/talk show never became reality.  I will NOT be enjoying his (and Tim McCarver's) shtick during the World Series but that's the price I pay for being exclusively a MLB fan.

People I know into NASCAR say the FOX people on those telecasts are good.  Why can't they get good, progressive people on national telecasts?

/rant . . .  it's getting late, I better go sleepu

IN. Credible. I am sick and tired of FOX's interviews during the game. Can we get the insight LATER? And stop showing me loser actors in the crowd.

AH HA HA !! You just DID NOT DO THAT Kuroda! Great stuff last game. Manny rushing out and helping unlike earlier this year in Boston.

But fuck, what was Torres THINKING tonite...dropped the ball there with his relievers.  I thought the Dodgers were gonna tie shit up.

Indeed...mo' has passed onto the Rays.

Shane Victorino's favorite food

Of COURSE it's Spam musubi.  For some reason PETA is upset...

http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/10/shane_victorino.php

I wonder if Buck had to explain what the hell a musubi is.

Thoughts on Shane
« Reply #1003 on: October 16, 2008, 11:18:55 PM »
Dodgers are OUT!  Phillies will represent the National League in the World Series.  Shane Victorino is becoming quite the celebrity, even getting the attention locals in Hawaii for the SPAM musubi controversy:
http://www.starbulletin.com/news/hawaiinews/20081015_PETA_plays_hardball_with_Victorino_over_Spam.html

To quote Reggie Jackson, fans don't boo nobodies.

For S. Victorino to get the national spotlight is a helluva big deal.  Hawaii should be proud, especially since making it big in Philly is just as hard as it is in New York, The Greatest City In The World (do they still say that on "Late Show with David Letterman?").

Not that this hasn't come about without careful cultivation of the landscape.  From spring training Victorino went about a PR campaign to increase his brand name with Phillies fans, doing interviews and stuff.  He was even miked for Game 5 of the NLCS, just like a friggin' "reality" show.

He's riding the wave of positive pub due to matching up with important sporting cliches and archetypes: gritty, scrappy, CLUTCH, playing The Game The Right Way, etc.  He's overrated and underrated at the same time.  Also he's not talking li'dat pidgin English on national TV.  The SPAM connection is enough!

Sox win Game Five of ALCS; rally from 7-0 deficit to stay alive
« Reply #1004 on: October 17, 2008, 09:09:10 AM »
FUCK!  What a game!

Twas getting rather boring in the 7th, the flaky bandwagon fans jumping off the Titanic.  And then it happened.

Pedroia RBI single.  Big Papi three-run bomb.  J.D. Drew with a two-run homer in the 8th.  And then CoCo Crisp, the most unlikely leadoff hitter of the series, fouls off several 3-2 fastballs off Dan Wheeler and finally lines a game-tying single to right.

Feel bad for Longoria, whose throwing error in the 9th helped set up Drew's game winning hit in the 9th.  Rays were tasting the bubbley but it just didn't work out.  What a comeback for the Sox and I am excited that there will be baseball on TV this weekend!

Al Daulerio of Deadspin phrased it well: The highlights won't do it justice. The Red Sox are just scary.

What Would Manny Say??

I'm at a lost of words at the potential CHOKE JOB the Rays are gonna pull off.

Huzzah for Baseball Game 7s on a Sunday nite!

The two best words: Game Seven
« Reply #1007 on: October 19, 2008, 11:19:51 AM »

When Upton hit the homer off Beckett in the first, I thought, here we go!  But the Rays bats suddenly went pffffttttt! and the score could easily have been 10-2 if not for a few clutch two-out popups by the Sox batters.

I'm really digging a 7th game (so is TBS, I guess, and they better not fuck up this time) cause that's what MLB needs, no matter what the "market" is.  (BTW I'm reading reports that people at Dodger Stadium were VERY vicious and abusive towards visiting Phillie supporters; I'm surprised this isn't being reported more.)

Will TB's legacy be of classic chokers if they lose tomorrow night.  Probably.  I'm not sure it will stick for long, especially if they get into the postseason a few more times.  And we're not far removed from the all-time gag job: 2004 NY Yankees.  I still can't believe that actually happened (more than the K. Gibson walk off, TWENTY years ago this week).

David Price just struck out J.D. Drew with the bases loaded in the 8th.  Inning over.

I think Tampa's going to the World Serious...

BRING IT! What a game 1. LAY DOWN THE SMACK.

Who is your pick to win the 2008 World Series? I got the Rays. In 6. Phillies been resting over a week and rusty. NOT SO.

MVP Upton! Dude is slick...killer throw from CF to nail the runner at home plate.

Phils hung on tho. 3-2 final.

Good game, although there was that sense of inevitability regarding the Rays win.  Myers did a helluva job completing seven innings.  His pitch count was really low.

Looking forward to the nuts in Philly.  WHY CAN'T US?!!

That's some nice squeezing there. Rays ARE pretty deep. This thing looks to go the distance! Cole Hamels might get another start so who knows!

How about Taco Bell be picking signs last game!! Customers get 1 free taco this coming Tuesday from 2 to 6. MAKE A RUN FOR THE BORDER!

Damn, what a finish!  Another CLOSE game and sloppy play set up the last runs for both the Rays and Phillies.

Phillies crush the Rays 10-2; one win from World Series championship
« Reply #1016 on: October 27, 2008, 08:21:55 AM »

POW!  Phillies crush the Rays!  Ryan Howard got his opposite field stroke back but who woulda thunk it: Joe Blanton goes yard!

The last time a pitcher homered in the World Series was 1974!  For those of you scoring at home, that was: a LONG time ago.
