Who knew? I thought he was going to pieces after the early runs he gave up.

OUCH for Francisco Liriano. Tommy John  and he's gone for 2007 too.

Athletics moving to Fremont??

This news about the Athletics moving out of Oakland took me by surprise but isn't a real shocker either.  I've been to the Oakland Colesium before they renovated it into a massive football behemoth and I liked the working class atmosphere of the area and its fans.  Still, there's more buck$ down the Interstate...

Hey, isn't Kristi Yamaguchi from Fremont??

OK the posting process for Matsuzaka is completed and it's up to Seibu to decide whether or not to accept the fee of the yet-to-be-revealed MLB team.

Predictions?

1) NY Mets
2) NY Yanks
3) Texas Rangers

Hmm...  a Texas newpaper reported that the Rangers got the #1 bid on Matsuzaka.  Buster Olney of ESPN.com says it's the Red Sox.

But... brace yourself for another winning bid from the Evil Empire, cause you know the Gyroball King ain't no "Toad" Irabu!

Too bad he doesn't actually throw a gyroball and instead throws a kind of 145km/h reverse slider called a shuuto.  Nasty pitch, though.  I must I'd rather see Mastsuzaka play with the Rangers instead of the Red Sox, but as long as they come to Miami to play the Marlins I'll be happy.

Reports now say Boston ponyed up $50 million-plus!  Whoopie!

Fans in Japan had better learn how to handle heartbreak if they want to become Red Sox fans!

Japan reacts to the news of Boston's record-setting bid.

FWIW, I have heard but one (1) broadcaster who pronounced  it "DICE-kay"; the rest said "die-SUKI."

Anyone that's not a Giant's fan is already used to heartbreak XD

Also, I think this needs pointing out.  "According to Jiji Press, the fee for Matsuzaka's rights was nearly equal to three times the Lions' entire payroll for 2006."

The Big Hurt might do some good in Toronto, provided he stays healthy and can put up good OBP numbers.

So who replaces Thomas as Oakland's DH?  Why, BARRY BONDS of course!

Right?

Riiiight!

An eight-year deal for Soriano is LUNACY.  The Cubs haven't been in the Fall Classic since World War II so what's another year, ay?

Ryan Howard was voted the NL MVP by a bunch of stale baseball "writers" today.  Whatever.  Pujols and Carlos Beltran were clearly superior to me but... whatever.

Justin Morneau just won the AL MVP.

I guess BBWAA membership must include a blood oath to the Church of RBI.  NOTHING ever changes when it comes to beat MLB writers who vote on these things -- NOTHING!  They have a bloodlust for that single statistic, blinding them to all else.

Morneau couldn't have been one of the top five (5) players in the A.L. this season.  Top ten?  Maybe...

Oh well, I'll stop caring about this shit in a few hours...

Juan Pierre signs for... $9 million a year?!!
« Reply #556 on: November 22, 2006, 03:45:49 AM »
Holy shit: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2669903

$9 million a year for a guy whose OBP is BELOW average but...  gotta love those "great qualities as a human being."  You'd think it's the Rockies' front office making these player personnel decisions.

The Dodgers have made some dunderhead free agent signings in the past but this would be the yokozuna of bonehead contracts if it's true.

Who would be a bigger contract bust: Pierre or Alfonso Soriano?

Any Dodger fans want DePodesta back in the GM office?

Pierre would be the bigger bust, but Soriano's production will go down a little this year.

Jeter should've won the mvp.

Totally agree with your AL MVP candidate.

And...  the same people who think Soriano is worth signing for eight (8) years are very likely the same people who thought Justin Morneau was more "valuable" in 2006 than Jeter or Joe Mauer.

http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2006/11/rbi_rbi_rbi.php

Rich Lederer quoted Keith Law of ESPN.com regarding the AL MVP vote:

I think all carping about the NL MVP voters getting their choice wrong must immediately cease. The AL's voters couldn't even correctly identify the most valuable Twin, never mind wrapping their heads around a whole league.

The reality of baseball is that a great offensive player at an up-the-middle position is substantially more valuable than a slightly better hitter at a corner position. And when that up-the-middle player is one of the best fielders at his position in baseball, there's absolutely no comparison. Joe Mauer was more valuable than Justin Morneau this past season. If you don't understand that, you don't understand the first thing about baseball.

Amen.
