EmoThe three stared up at the clock wondering if the work was going to disappear but it seemed to stare at them with expectation. Holding the first set aside, Nyaro and Miichan stacked the first box to put it aside. A sound of thunder struck their hearing and turned towards Yuko, who was holding her stomach.
“Nee, you want some lunch?” Nyaro asked.
“I should have something here.”
Yuko walked out with her eyes set on the location her crash. The area was cleaned from the night before but the little shards were still stuck in the carpet. Yuko lifted her right hand above the ground and lifted the pieces off the ground. Holding the shards in her hand, she turned it into clear sand before smashing it into a small diamond. She grabbed the container in front of her and opened it slowly to find a sandwich.
“You! I saw that.” The voice caught her as Takamina pointed at her.
“If you want this, you can have it.” Yuko offered. “It isn’t worth anything to me.”
Takamina snatched the diamond from the ground as Yuko bit into her sandwich. Chewing slowly, she began to reminisce about her life on the Hencho. It was easier to fit in with the others compared to Japan but she never felt awkward in being around people. Especially when she met Nyaro, it was new to meet someone not like her.
She bit into the sandwich again and turned to see Nyaro staring at her. Before she could say anything, Takamina showed the diamond to her. Intrigued by the item, Yuko walked passed by her with sandwich in hand and chewed on the dry bread as she began to dwell into her thoughts.
“Yuko, you seem to like Nyaro a lot.” Miichan commented.
“She is rather warm towards people and doesn’t mind my weird ways.”
“She may be a little unusual too.”
“How so?”
“She doesn’t like controlling men and she rarely shows affection towards them in general.” Miichan pointed out.
“Ahh, does it mean that she will eventually hate me?”
Miichan shook her head as she scooted her chair closer to her. Moving her hair aside, she placed her lips close to her ear. Yuko giggled as she was ready to speak and settled down.
“Nyaro will never hate you.” She whispered.
“Why?” Yuko mouthed.
“Because she likes to have friends because it makes her feel comfortable. Like Takahashi and I will never be friends with her, in a way close enough to hear her problems. But you have potential to get her secrets out of her.”
Yuko showed a toothy smile as the image swirled in her head. It was an opportunity to adapt herself into an environment away from the violence in her home planet. She felt confident that it could be a reason to stay beyond her agreement. Then, she began to realize the consequence of not returning and the videos of the past changed her smile into a stern glare at the wall.
“What’s wrong? You were all happy and now serious.”
“I can’t let myself get entwined with her. It would only hurt her if I do succeed in wooing her but do you think she will warm up after she realize the truth?”
The room went silent for a bit as Miichan started to think about her co-worker and slowly nod her head to problem at hand. Takamina walked in looking at Yuko for a bit before turning her attention towards Miichan as she was staring at the ceiling.
“Let’s take the rest of the day off.” She suggested with a smirk.
“What about the work?” Miichan asked.
“It doesn’t matter now. We need to leave anyway.” Takamina replied with a big grin.
The four strolled out of the workplace as men came into the room and started to throw everything onto the floor like a garbage pile. Takamina bit down on her lip as she pressed the button to send them to the lobby. They felt helpless towards the situation as they watched the men pile papers on top of each other. They bowed one last time before the elevator doors opened and left without glancing back at their former workplace.
“I guess we need to find new jobs.” Nyaro scoffed at the two.
“Kojima-san, I’m sorry about all this.” Takamina apologized as she bowed to the two. “I never expected this to happen.”
“It’s all right Takahashi-san.”
“No one is to blame except us for accepting a lame job to increase our hopes.” Haruna grumbled.
“Nyaro, a job is something you do for life.” Yuko started. “I cannot feel your pain but I can help you find an offer.”
“How can you help me?”
“I saw a paper sign talking about modeling while we were rushing and I thought you would like to try.”
Haruna showed a smile as the thought wasn’t worth a try but she wanted to seek what the cost of the project itself with other questions. Then she glanced over at Yuko like a dog wanting to play, she couldn’t resist the innocent smile Yuko had. She knew kittens don’t smile but showed affection through touch. Yuko knew that she understood the details but the answer seemed farther away.
“I’ll look into it.” She commented as she looked over at Miichan.
“Mariko always wanted me to help her promote her look for prospective clients so I’ll be doing that a while.” Miichan responded as they looked towards Takamina.
“I’m pretty much doomed for now. I need to get everything together again before I look for a job.” She sighed as the door opened to the lobby.
“Takamina!”
“Acchan? What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to invite you to a party but since you’re here we can go together now.” She explained as she grabbed for her hand.
“Wait!”
“What’s the matter?”
“I lost my job. I don’t feel like going to a party now.” Takamina responded.
“I’m going to announce my new role as of today.”
“You are going to continue to play girlfriend to the jerk?”
“No, I want to show them our relationship.” She explained with a half-smile.
Takamina fell to her knees and dug her face into her hands. Acchan held her close as the three watched them had a sacred moment of relief. Miichan kneel down to eye level and gave a confident nod to them. Nyaro and Yuko just watched the glorious moment unfold in front of them.
“Are you sure?” Takamina mumbled through her tears.
“If I wasn’t serious, I wouldn’t have come here.” Acchan replied.
Nyaro unconcerned for both of them left with Yuko to head to the nearest drinking hole she could find at the moment. Yuko followed her around many places before settling on a small place where no one was in attendance. She took her seat at the bar and was given a small bottle of premium sake with two cups. Yuko understood the situation and poured the first cup for her as Nyaro returned the favor.
“You know tradition.” Nyaro commented as she kicked back her first cup.
“I learned it on my way here.”
Yuko kicked back her drink and the elixir burned her throat for a moment before smoothing out towards the end. She let out a loud sigh as the drink started to slowly take effect on her mind. The clearing ability seemed to do its work and both poured drink for each other.
“One more for our health.” Nyaro shouted.
“One more.” Yuko agreed.
The place slowly filtered in people but Haruna disregarded their presence as she grew rowdy with every cup she took. However, Yuko developed the affinity to the drink and just poured drinks for her new friend at her request. She never expect four bottles to be finished to let Nyaro stumbled through the town.
“You know… I like girls… right?”
“Yes I do.”
“I guess it wouldn’t be excusable.”
Nyaro leaned in and pressed her lips on top of Yuko. Feeling the weight going towards her, she tried to keep her upright as the alcohol was starting its battle. Yuko couldn’t resist a chance and turned her around as the drunken woman faced her back to the wall. Clasping each other hands, she pressed them onto the wall until Haruna brushed her away.
“I feel better when I’m around you. You have something I like and I hope it stays.”
“I don’t know what you mean?” Yuko said with a questioned look.
“Let’s go home and we’ll sleep on it.” Nyaro suggested.
“I guess so.”
Yuko guided the drunk back home where she collapsed onto her half-made futon and ventured to dreamland. She observed Nyaro closely and smiled at her. She didn’t know what was wrong with the situation but fear grew within her.
