I felt bad for Mii-chan. I love her determination, keep fighting. I'm glad she has her older sisters Taka, Tomo, Atsuko, Mariko to cheer her up and be there for her. She will definitely rise soon enough and be promoted. Ganbare Mii-chan!!! I support you all the way :twothumbs

I feel bad for the Miichan oshi's - it if were my oshimen, I'd be far more distraught over this loss of hair rather than the boyfriend thing or the demotion to KKS.

I hope she stays strong and glad that her fellow members are supporting her  :)

Shirahama Alan’s agency releases statement regarding Shukan Bunshun’s report

Quote
On January 31, LDH the agency for GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE’s Shirahama Alan, released a short statement regarding Shukan Bunshun’s report about his relationship with AKB48’s Minegishi Minami.

According to their comment, “We leave his private life up to him. He told us that they were nothing more than just good friends.”

Shunkan Bunshun reported that Minegishi spent the night at Shirahama’s place, on the latest issue published on the 31st. It caused Minegishi’s demotion to Kenkyuusei, and she also posted an apology video on AKB48’s official YouTube channel with a shaved head.

At first I was shocked to know that Miichan shaved her hair.  It was long and very cute, and I can imagine how it is important for a girl.

But when I saw that picture with Miichan smiling with another 1st gen members, I can feel nothing but respect.  Maybe she shaved her hair to show her regret with this incident, who knows?

And her wotas certainly will show their respect and love with some extreme attitude, like hers :)

This was so "whuh?" I thought it may have been some early JPHiP joke, but seeing is believing.  Stupid mistake for a veteran of the idol industry, but I definitely respect her.  Getting the demotion is one thing, but her shaving her hair is definitely an outward symbol of her "self-punishment" (since the idol industry is at it's core image based.)  I support her.

^This.

- there's probably members thinking "wtf you doing? don't go bald! wtf are we supposed to do now?"
Well, don't get caught or you'll get your head shaved while you're sleeping.

After going through the shaved head mii-chan shock, being angry at the article, reflect that she was one of the earliest members I liked in the group, and being lucky enough to actually shake her hand twice. I think I'm calm enough to reply.

Miichan has done a lot for the group, I think a lot of fans support her for this. And leaving would've been a total loss for AKB. I'm glad how it has turned out.
I'm just sad that this happened just when no3b got a new single out after a year of waiting. And fans recently getting unnecessarily worried from constant news like this.
But turning KKS is no problem at all, I'm sure Miichan will bounce back. :)

Totally off topic: Remember AKBINGO! said she was the luckiest girl this year. Maybe its a really weird start for a Miichan push. :nervous

Togasaki posts about this on his google+ https://plus.google.com/116244092830131285439/posts/FnyCV5JQ5CV

Quote
Tomonobu Togasaki (English page)8:39 AM  -  Public
We have received many opinions and questions from the fans regarding the video of Minegishi's apology. I would like to add further explanations since the management hasn't fully expressed their explanation to your questions.

□ Why did you have to stream a video like this?

When we were in a hurry preparing for the streaming and we have received a report that Minegishi really wants to apologize personally with her hair shaved. We felt how strong her will and feeling towards AKB48 was, so we decided to stream the video as we planned.

□ Was it necessary to shave her hair?

It wouldn't be necessary even if you ask if it was necessary or not. It was just that Minegishi really wanted to convey how strong her feeling was.

□ Did anybody stop her from shaving her hair?

I heard that when she came out from the make up room, she had already shaved her hair. It seems that the staff beside her did stop her. However, I heard that she said that people might think of her as a fool, but she really wanted to put her reflection into action, so she cut her bangs using scissors without losing control over herself.

□ Isn't it unfair that the punishment for each of the members who had scandals were different?

It would be better if we can establish the same rule. However, we are experiencing a dilemma because it is difficult to conceive a common rule since each member is under a different situation.
For example, a member had been warned many times, but did not listen to anyone and created a scandal.
There was also a member who wanted to pursue her dreams and was about to plan on graduating when a scandal about her was exposed.
There was also a member whose past was discovered.
There was also a member whose scandal was not exposed, but still had a huge rule violation.
Please do understand that we have to make decisions with consideration to many circumstances.

□ There was a photo of Minegishi, which has been uploaded on the internet, where she looked like she was having fun with the first generation members. Did she really reflect on her actions?

Before the rehearsals of the theater performance of Team B, I saw Minegishi who came to apologize with an exhausted expression on her face, so I can say that she has reflected on her actions. At the same time, it seemed like she was trying her best not to make people around her feel worried. I think that is the reason why the members of the same generation as her were encouraging Minegishi who was feeling depressed.

We, the managing team, would like to support the members who are trying their best to pursue their dreams by having continuous discussion with them.

So, the whole Miichan shaving head incident/video has gotten around since last night and now non-AKB/idol ppl are believing management forced her to shave her head then make the video and campaigning to flag the video on youtube, it's just a mess right now.

All I know is that this pretty much says it for me. http://pup.tumblr.com/post/42012951694/maketakunai-pup-shes-a-member-of-akb48-who

EDIT: also Hirari's G+ post http://girls48.tumblr.com/post/41986336987/hirata-rinas-g-translation-regarding-minegishi

Quote
Cultural Competence
I don't know how many people actually read my blog, but if you happen to be one of them, please share / retweet this.

I heard about all these posts on tumblr, through my twitter timeline, and the "extended discussions" these posts have generated.  These discussions apparently range from whether Minegishi's head was shaved by herself or by management, to feminist movements and gender equality in Japan.

One user in particular called for youtube users to report Minegishi's apology video as abusive and hopes youtube will take it down eventually.

I haven't read any of these posts myself - this is exactly the kind of inane discussion I avoid when it comes to this fandom (or any topic that requires in-depth knowledge across multiple disciplines, really).  But from my feeds, it feels like this is really getting out of hand, and the information that's being passed around is not entirely correct.

Here are the facts that have been clarified either by management or by Minegishi herself:
- she shaved her own head (calmly, as Togasaki mentioned in a supplementary post on AKB's official blog)
- her punishment for being involved with Shirahama is demotion
- she admitted to wrongdoing ("this was all my fault")

Please see my [urlhttps://twitter.com/Bilingual48/status/297232348246839296]twitter[/url] translations of the Togasaki post from this afternoon for more information.

Anything else is speculation.  Calling this a "sex scandal" is not quite correct because no one knows the extent of her "wrongdoing" and I don't think we'll ever find out.  If legit Japanese news sources aren't calling this a sex scandal, why are Western tumblr users exaggerating?

As for head-shaving, feminist movement and gender equality - this might be hard to believe, but in Japanese culture, head-shaving is one way for a person to show regret and take responsibility for having done something wrong, or failing to keep a promise.  One may think of head-shaving as a modern version of the archaic practice of ritual suicide.

In recent Japanese history, people have shaved their own heads for much lesser reasons:
- in 1982 and 1999, two newscasters shaved their heads because the baseball team one of them supported did not win (1982); the other shaved his head in 1999 because the team he hated won (the team is Yomiuri Giants in both cases)
- Dervish Yu, a Japanese pitcher who now plays for Texas Rangers, shaved his head in 2008 because the Japanese National Baseball Team lost to Cuba
- Nagashima Shigeo, a hall-of-famer in Japanese Baseball, once shaved his head to apologize for behaving poorly to an umpire

It is relatively rare for women to shave their heads, but this does not mean they don't.

Westerners who are not familiar with this part of the Japanese culture will certainly see Minegishi's shaved head as something else, and that's understandable.  But I do wish the most outspoken tumblr users would do a bit of research before condemning a whole organization with insufficient knowledge.

As for the no-dating clause - I really dislike getting into this topic with non-fans, because this is a touchy / hairy subject even with existing fans.  In fact members don't even like to discuss it other than repeating the rule.  The bottom line is that they all joined AKB knowing that they could get in trouble for dating, and they willingly stayed in the group.

It is one thing to feel sorry for Minegishi, but quite another to call for boycotts or advocate gender equality in Japan when one doesn't know better.  Values that one grew up with aren't necessary the same for everyone, and what one sees on a regular basis in his/her home country is not always the norm in other countries.  If we can all take a little time to understand one another before being so judgmental, the world would be a much better place.

The more I read about this the less I know what to think about it. There are many scenarios, but once again, we will never know what happened behind the scenes for real.

There's the issue whether she did shave her head voluntarily or whether she was told to by the management.
She could have shaved her head:
A. To be absolutely sure she can remain in the group; the "I've been punished more than enough" approach.
B. So it makes her the victim. Just look anywhere, people are jumping through hoops showing their support for her.
C. As a massive publicity stunt. (this would suck, but I'm not surprised by anything anymore).

There are so many variables. We don't know how big the scale of this really is. Same as with the all the Kasai stuff really.
We have AKB's management, Ogi Pro agency, mass media, etc. all trying to look after their own interests, sometimes hurting the AKB members in the process of it all.

So yeah, I'm not really sure what to think. Miichan knows the rules better than anyone. Whether or not the rules are too extreme or outdated is an entirely different discussion altogether. I think her demotion to KKS would have sufficed, but if it really was her idea to shave her head and appear in a dramatic online apology that's her own fault. I can't really feel sorry for her in that aspect.

Once again, there are many scenarios of how she could have handled this scandal. Let it blow over (Kana), talk it over with the management and accept the demotion (Sayaka), leave the group (Nacchan/Rumi), etc. The fact that she chose this massive public display comes across like she really is 'guilty' and that it's been probably been going on for a much longer time.

I don't think it's as variable as you say it is.

The 恋愛禁止 is a weird beast. We have instances of Akimoto saying 'I never said that', or varying punishments for girls that all fall under that particular rule. It's like they made it very ambiguous on purpose. Miichan probably knew she didn't need to shave her head, but she did it anyway. This wasn't for the fans at all, it seemed like it was a projection of what she thought about 恋愛禁止条例. It's sad that it came to this at all, really, but no one actually talked about Miichan.

C. As a massive publicity stunt.

I think that's most of it. We've had scandals before. Some girls got fired, some got transferred, some got titles taken away, and some just went about their fucking business. They could have let this blow over or do something more typical. But no, instead, we go for the shock angle. Look at the huge international reaction it got! Like Barrie said we'll never truly know who really decided to do what, but from my perspective, all I can think is Mi$$ion Accompli$hed.

I'm gonna kill this girl  :shifty: :temper:
she makes me sick :hip burp:
SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING!!! :banghead:
Miichan was in AKB since it started so she doesn't understand how Miichan felt
even though she might of made a mistake with shaving her head and the whole scandal, fans or not
she's already done it and its in the past and if Miichan felt like she had to do something like this let's just be
thankful and grateful that she's hasn't hurt herself!!!

we understand her.
sometimes people do not understand why there was a love-ban-rule for some idols group.

Minami and nearly all of the girls were admitted into the group when they were either in junior high or early high school.

The reason I bring this up is that the companies behind the pop idols are businesses, with profit in mind. They have many adults who either work for these companies directly, or are contract workers who depend on the business they get from the production companies.

So it is a difficult situation to begin with- the producers need to push the artists to improve their performance level, so that the buyers (fans) will continue to buy the products, yet as adults, they have to guide the artists as they transition from young teens into adulthood. The producers really do have a moral responsibility to look after the kids, just like school teachers and firemen/policeman do.

All the details in the fans and new media outlets don't really concern me. I try to keep it simple- I like seeing the artists improve their artistic and/or variety skills, I like to be cheered up by harmless entertainment, when real life situations are not always so good. I am happy that the production companies and the artists are working hard to make their product fun and that they make gettimg to know the artists better an interesting experience.

A bonus for me was after the earthquake, when the whole population was in a state of shock over the extreme loss of life, all of the various entertainment companies put on fundraising, and personal appearance campaigns to help cheer up the country. Sure, it would benefit the companies to create this good will, but when I watched various clips of the young artists visiting the  parts of the country that were worst effected, and saw children and their parents geniunely overjoyed that these idols came to see them, I was moved tremendously.

Minami has been the sort of artist who always seemed to want to present the best product that she could, and basically having worked in the adult world since she was a middle school kid, I can see how she could make a mistake or two here and there, just like any other kid. But in her case, it makes the front pages of the tabloids. And by the way, a form of advertisement for the tabloids is too hang sheets in the subway cars, with all the latest headlines, including little pictures from the tabloids. So, whether her shock was just from 'getting caught' or from a growing horror that she realized she was about to lose something that she really valued, I will never fully know.

But I saw a hurt person who was a good kid, who made me forget some of my problems, and  I have no qualms about saying I will continue to like the public persona of Minami Minegishi (and others out there) because I trust that 90% of what I am seeiing is the truth, which is about all you can expect in life.

The JPH!P family has been a force for good in many cases, whether celebrating the life of someone that we lost too soon, or cheering up an idol when she was down (a bunch of you sent messages to one of the Morning Musume members, and she mentioned on her blog that all these foreign fans had  reached out to her- I am sure she was thrilled), or encouraging each other.....Minami is just like any one of us at this point. So let's try to focus on the good, and not let the bad or the cynical take us down.

Keep on keeping on y'all!   :cow:
