"Shinsei Morning Musume" name is on the front page of Yahoo.jp headlines today, but all for the wrong reasons. Yahoo is linking to a Japanese tabloid newspaper Nikkan Gendai's story :

I'm not sure which is better: the #1 ranking and highest first day sales in years...or the fact that this kind of success is becoming less of a surprise/novelty.

Idol group sales tend to drop off a lot in the second week nowadays; AKB is no exception.

By analyzing these numbers, we can see that weekly sales are around 30k more than the first days sales, so we should get around 125k for the first week for wagamama/gundan.
Also, we see a tendency of selling 10k more for the rest of the weeks, so final sales of 135k are likely.
But we have a new factor, that is increasing popularity and attention, so sales should get some boost.

AKB were never going to pose a real threat this week. Unless their single has voting tickets it practically never goes over 50k in its second week on sale.

ANYWAY, huge congrats to the girls for selling 96k first day. Glad to see that all of their hard work is starting to pay off.

I wonder how realistic 150k first week is? Guess we'll see how things play out over the next few days.

My copy came in the mail today! The poster is nice. And I grabbed the B-sides I didn't get with the pre-order.

It's funny. When I listen to "Wagamama..." I think, "This is the better of the A-sides." Then when I hear "Ai no Gundan" I think just the opposite. This is a good thing, probably.

B-side impressions:

"Makeru Ki Shinai Konya no Shobu": I like this one quite a bit -- it reminds me of an updated take on a classic style of idol song (if that makes any sense). I like all the "oh oh oh"-s.

"Bouya": This one is my favorite. I'd like to hear a rearranged version in a classic pop-rock style (kind of like the instrumentation of "Morning Coffee," I'd say); I think that would work really well. (My god, I'm liking most of the Sayu-led songs lately. What's wrong with me? Robo-Sayu conquers all, I guess.)

"Funwari Koibito Ichinensei": Maybe my opinion will change, but right now I really don't like this song at all. It's not very catchy to my ears, and kind of meanders.

Overall, I love four of the five tracks from this single, which is pretty darn good, I think. It's definitely my favorite overall MoMusu single (i.e. A and B sides considered) in quite a while.

I was reading another board earlier where people were discussing uploading and downloading the single. I mean, you can have all the A-sides and B-sides from this single (minus instrumentals) for less than $7 (if you live in the US like me). You can seriously get a $10 iTunes gift card and get all the songs. I know we like to complain about Up-Front, but one place they need to be commended on is having 95% of the current Hello! Project songs up on iTunes for purchase by overseas fans. I understand downloading obscure/hard to get acts (because I know how expensive importing can be), but MoMusu (and C-ute, Berryz, S/mileage) are RIGHT THERE on iTunes.

I was reading another board earlier where people were discussing uploading and downloading the single. I mean, you can have all the A-sides and B-sides from this single (minus instrumentals) for less than $7 (if you live in the US like me). You can seriously get a $10 iTunes gift card and get all the songs. I know we like to complain about Up-Front, but one place they need to be commended on is having 95% of the current Hello! Project songs up on iTunes for purchase by overseas fans. Dude I can't agree more. To me, buying the tracks on iTunes is actually easier and faster than downloading them, too Guilt free, and they come so fast. It's like Steam, but for music instead of video games. Convenience beats the little price you gotta pay for things


...And it sorts music for me into artist folders. That's like heaven sent to me.
