My editor has been gone on vacation for a week now and I have no idea when he's coming back so I apologize for grammar mistakes/typos...
“Mou~ Didn’t I tell you to call me Yukkun?” He adjusted his black framed glasses and continued, “Watanabe-sensei is my father, you know…”
He puffed out his cheeks and looked away like a petulant child who didn’t get the toy he wanted. Yu Watanabe is a famous young surgeon who worked in a prestigious hospital in Tokyo. He’s cool, calm and collected but he also gives out this younger brother aura.
He’s normally emotionless but if there’s only the two of us together he would act like spoiled brat. He’s actually quite loud, nosy and happy-go-lucky. I’m not actually sure why he’s here in Nagoya working as our School Physician and whenever I ask him about it, he would always answer “It’s just not awesome without me.”
Trying not to roll my eyes at his antics, I apologized saying I’ll share some of the rice balls I made for lunch. His eyes lit up and a smile tugging at his lips, “Jurina-chan’s homemade Onigiri? I can’t wait for lunchtime!”
We continued walking to school as Yu-sensei talked about some anime he watched last night. I don’t really understand half of what he says so I just tune him out, occasionally nodding when I thought he asked me a question. Our first meeting was unconventional that sometimes I wonder how we get along so well.
“Matsui-san?” I turned around when I heard my name being called.
“Ah, Furukawa-sensei… is something the matter?”
Airi Furukawa, she teaches Home Economics and also our Class Adviser. Students affectionately call her Airin. Furukawa-sensei has a penchant for making portrait sketches of her students. She’s also good at playing musical instruments such as the piano and the flute.
Furukawa-sensei approached me with a wary smile on her face. She tilted her head upward because of our height differences and it somehow made me uncomfortable. Teachers here in our school sure are short people.
“You were a member of the kendo club during middle school, right?” she asked. I nodded my head and let her continue, “Do you have any first aid training?”
I blinked a couple times processing her inquiries. I won’t call it training but when one of the students at the dojo would get hurt my brother and I are usually the ones who help to tend their injuries. Like cleaning small cuts, treating sprains, fractures and bruising.
“Yes, you could say that…” I looked at her quizzically. What does this have to do with anything? Furukawa-sensei sighed. “Well, would you mind if I appoint you as a member of the Health Committee?”
“Ah…” All the previous members of the Health Committee already graduated. For the last two years of high school, I haven’t been to any club. I would help other clubs when they asked me to but would decline if they offer to take me as a member. The Health Committee, huh? I guess it won’t so bad… This is my last year in high school and saying no to a teacher is hard for me.
“Sure, I won’t mind at all.” I smile at the shorter woman. Her eyes twinkled and took out something from her pocket. It was a key. “Here, this is the key to the Clinic. You don’t have to stay there during breaks or after school but just make sure the new School Physician knows you.”
She bowed her head and thanked me. “You really saved me, Matsui-san…”
“Jurina-chan! Oi, Matsui Jurina-chan!” I stopped abruptly stopped walking when I heard a high-pitched voice.
“I’m sorry, did you say something Sensei?” I turned to my right to look at him and he’s puffing out his cheeks again. His childishness would always make me smile. I raised my hand to his head and ruffled his perfectly combed hair that he probably worked on for hours.
“Hey! Not the hair, gah!”
“You’re so cute Yu-sensei!” I stopped torturing him. His hair messy from all the ruffling I did and he looked even more boyish. He took out a small mirror from his backpack trying to fix it and glared at me.
“Do you know what you just did?” he pouted.
I didn’t say anything but playfully grinned at him. Yu-sensei would always try to look adult-like despite having such a baby-face and boyish charms. He would always say that other adults don’t take him seriously because of how he looks. “Don’t compare yourself to others, you are yourself” as I always say.
Human beings are complex. Trying to be something they’re not and ending up hurting other people to get what they wanted, forcing their ideas unto others despite the obvious resistance. There are times you just don’t know what to do but you keep on going just to live for the people you care about.
But that’s what makes us human. We make mistakes and cope with them, facing challenges life throws at us. Looking for greener pastures in the depths of darkness. Yu Watanabe is still a mystery to me but if I could help him open up even just a little bit, then maybe, we can remedy both of our sufferings.
I tried to proofread as hard as I can, I have signs of dyslexia so yeah...
This fic is shaping far from what I initially planned, mainly because I'm writing three more fanfics excluding this one.
