6Always ReunitedChapter 1I heard the loud sound of a truck beeping their horn outside and my body slowly attempted to get out of its long slumber. I sat up on my queen sized bed and I blinked a few times to get rid of the slight blurriness in my eyes. I sat there for a second before looking at the time on my alarm clock. 3PM.
Damn, I spent all of last night thinking about her again. I thought I was finally starting to get over her.A knock came from the other side of my bedroom door and a familiar voice softly asked, “Sayanee, are you awake yet? Yuppi just finished making lunch and Rikanyan just set up the table for us.”
That was the voice of Kotani Riho (Ripopo). Together with Yamaguchi Yuuki (Yuppi) and Kishino Rika (Rikanyan), the three of them made up my apartment mates. We’d been friends ever since middle school and we’re still close friends now in our university years. It came as no surprise that we’d all be living together now in our spacious, four bedroom apartment.
For Ripopo, she’s like a younger sister to me. Quirky and funny, Ripopo had originally dreamed of being a variety TV star, but soon the acting bug bit her and now she’s studying theater in our university. She’s already gotten a few small roles in some horror films as well.
“Ah, I’m up now, Ripopo. I’ll freshen up a bit and be there in a second.”
I headed into the bathroom right off my bedroom and washed up. Afterwards, I went to my closet and picked out a simple pair of shorts and my favorite Avril Lavigne T-shirt. Satisfied with my fashion selection, I exited my room and entered the dining room and saw Rikanyan in her lovely gothic lolita attire, setting down a platter of delicious looking sushi. She noticed me and with a smile on her face, said, “Your fashion sense is getting worse and worse everyday.”
For Rikanyan, she’s always been the fashion expert of our group. Yuppi, Ripopo, and I would always look to her to help us decide what would be good in our wardrobe. Fashion came as second nature to her and now she’s studying fashion design in our university. Along with that, she’s appeared in a few fashion magazines, advising people on the hottest new trends in the fashion world.
I laughed back at her. “You don’t know how hard it was to find a website willing to ship this limited edition Avril shirt to Japan. It’s awesome.”
It wasn’t until then that I noticed the tremendous amounts of food on the dining room table. Grilled vegetables, rolls of sushi, ramen noodles, fried duck, sesame chicken, shrimp wontons, fish head curry, and much more. Yuppi emerged from the kitchen, brought over an appetizer platter of takoyaki, and announced, “Bon Appétit.”
For Yuppi, she’s like the kind, maternal figure of our group. She was always the one of nursed our injuries when we played in middle school and she handled most of the chores of the apartment without ever complaining. And her cooking was top notch. She always made different delicious bentos for us in school and we’d be more than happy to be taste testers for her new recipes. She was recently admitted to a prestigious culinary school affiliated with our university and she’s hoping to eventually start her own restaurant after she graduates.
“Wow, Yuppi, you really out-did yourself this time. What’s the occasion?”
Yuppi looked over to Rikanyan and Ripopo and in unison, my three apartment mates screamed, “HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY, SAYAKA!”
Oh right, we planned to celebrate my birthday today. I completely forgot.Technically, my birthday was tomorrow. But we couldn’t fit time in our busy schedules to celebrate tomorrow, so we decided to hold the celebration today.
With a big smile on my face, all I could say was “You guys…”
Over the next few hours, the four of us ate, sang karaoke, played video games, watched movies, and lastly, drank beer. It was just a really fun night. Given my alcohol tolerance was the best of the group, I helped bring my friends to their rooms after the alcohol had knocked them out for the night. Finally, I slowly made my way back to my room.
Upon entering my room, I noticed the alarm clock reading 12:30AM. Officially my birthday. And the first thing I planned to do on my birthday was get some sleep. I quickly changed into my pajamas and got under the covers of my bed. As I laid my head on the pillow, I could feel myself falling asleep until I noticed my cell phone on the night stand. And the light was blinking. I reached for my phone and unlocked the screen
YOU HAVE 48 NEW MESSAGES.
Wait, what!? That must be wrong.Seeing that on my phone sobered me quickly. I looked at my messages and noticed all 48 messages came from a number I didn’t recognize. And before I could even start reading any of the messages, that unrecognized number showed up on the screen again. Only this time that number is calling me. It would probably have been a good idea to ignore the call, but curiosity got the better of me and I hit ACCEPT.
“Hello…”
“Hello, Sayaka… Umm… it’s me.”
“…Milky!?”
To be continued.
