Chapter 1
It started as raindrops. Then it became like a drum with the constant, heavy beat.
That's how it felt. Then again, that feeling had made me anxious.
"Sacchan! The order is up!"
The voice brought me back to this world as my hands grabbed the tray as I glanced at the ticket with my mind set on the table. The usual elderly couple ordering a simple shio ramen as I placed it down and handed the first bowl to the woman and then to the man. The courtesy smile always comes accustomed with my delivery before heading back to the waiting area.
It was the fact that I had imagined everything seemingly going perfectly well in life. There was nothing that seemed to bother me until the moment a young couple had come inside the restaurant. My heart seemed be deflated by the sight of them like someone had squeezed the life out of it. They walked to my station of all places as I held the tray in one hand and take out the notebook from my pocket.
The order came clear but the gibberish they were talking made me want to get the better knife and slit their throats or at least give them water to stop the talking as I stood there staring at them while they playfully argue with each other about what would seemingly be great. My mind had wondered off when they were in discussion and gave them a simple suggestion of a large bowl of shio ramen to soothe both of their stomachs.
As I came back to the waiting area to get my order in, a seat had opened up as I rushed it into the computer and ran back to the table to get the bowls. I never liked to rush through it but seeing the slowly forming line, it had developed to be a good day for ramen as the soothing breeze had come through. Once everything came on my tray, I delivered it to the dishwasher, Aika-chan who usually was quite blunt when it came to my service but she was quiet, staring at me for a bit before I ran back with the warm rag to wipe up the table for the next customer.
“I got this one~”
Hearing the voice of Haruppi was a relief yet I grew to wonder why she hadn’t clean up the table beforehand. My mind went away again as the group of four burly men had taken the seats. Their stench had made me wonder if they were foreigners and Haruppi being the usual happy person had her smile wiped off instantly as she ran to get the water with the sour look on her face.
The restaurant itself was usually busy and the fact that evenings were the worst part of the day to work ever. They left it for the younger ones as they could gain experience with scheduling but being on the lowest end of the totem pole, I found myself wanting to at least get a day off on the weekend. It would be nice to at least get something to do during the cool nights in Fukuoka.
“Sacchan! Next order!”
The couple was still in deep discussion as I dropped off the bowl between them as I took out the chopsticks from my pocket and placed one in front of them. I ran back for the spoons and gave them before seeing another table emptying and grabbing their bowls of soup to take back as Aika was still using her secret powers to scare me off. As I started to wipe the table, my eyes went to the entrance as a tall figure with an elegant ponytail had walked into the restaurant and scanned the area.
“Excuse me! Okyakusama! There’s a seat here.” My voice reaching a screech as I got the attention as the person took a seat.
“First time here?”
“Un. It is unusual how Fukuoka is rather busy now than in Nagasaki.” The voice came off as a female but her dress made her look masculine with the rock t-shirt and black jeans.
“I’m originally from Kagoshima.” I explained as she gave a gentle smile.
“Ah Kagoshima must be great… Why are you in Fukuoka?” She asked as my hand went for the notepad.
“School.”
She nodded as she looked up at the menu to the right of her as the many selections of ramen we had on the board. I glanced down and about as Haruppi bumped me from behind. Seeing the smile, I tended to wonder about her but I heard her voice come back within my area as she pointed up to the board.
“Chanpon?”
Chanpon? I wondered when the last person to order that was. It was a Nagasaki dish if she had ordered it as I wrote it down before I nodded as she grabbed my wrist.
“Can I also have hot tea? If you don’t mind.”
I nodded as I placed the order into the system. The immediate reactions from the chefs were exactly as mine. Getting the instant powder and scooping into the cup before opening the spout for the hot water, I began to see her as unusual when Haruppi came up to me.
“Trying to be friendly?”
The tone made me irked as she always had pushed it onto me for some reason or another. It wasn’t anything that I tried to speak to many customers to make a quality impression on them but she also saw that no matter what I stayed even among everyone. Despite having to crush on a few of the boys, I never felt consumed by the feeling to actually be asked out.
“Sorry for the wait.” I apologized and offered the tea to her.
“It was no problem. I figured you were talking to the other waitress.” She laughed as I felt the anger growing within me. “I was just wondering what school you go to… You don’t seem to be that much older than I am.”
“I go to the Hakata Secondary school.” I replied promptly keeping my eyes at the window.
“Same here… I hope we see each other soon.” She said as I ran off to get the dish for her.
It was weird that we had this conversation while I had neglected a few table with the exasperated Haruppi running around to fill the orders. I grabbed the dish and carefully walked over to the table. It was heavier than the usual ramen bowls I usually would get as the scent seemed to consume my senses. My eyes went for the table as I dropped it off perfectly in front of her with my hand going for the chopsticks and handing it in front of her but not seeing the spoon, I turned to the window before in the moment seeing the ceiling.
“Are you okay?” She asked when the people slowly huddled around me.
“Yeah… just something.” I laughed it off when I heard a crash in the kitchen.
“Itai!”
“Let me help you up.” She said as her soft hand clasped with mines as I got upright for the moment.
“Thanks.” I brushed off as I could feel back soaked with something and I shook my head before washing my hands to get the spoon for the female. I continued on my rounds, apologizing for neglecting them from before as I saw her finishing up her bowl. I walked over with a tinge of pain running through my back.
“You took a big fall.” She snickered. “Thank you for being a good waitress.”
I saw a coin enter into my hand when I remembered the policy and I tried to give it back but she had waved her hand as she went to the door but I got to the door and stopped her with the breeze hitting my back like a brick wall as my arms crossed in front of me.
“I still can’t accept it.” I explained as she placed it into my pocket.
“It isn’t for you being a waitress. It is you for being cute.” She explained before turning around.
“Thanks… May I know your name?”
“It’s Moriyasu Madoka.” She shouted. “Sacchan, I’ll see you tomorrow at school.”
My first thoughts were cute and a tip. Then, she called me by my nickname at work. I ran back to see the droves leaving when the next set of waitresses had come out for their shift as I scurried to the back with Aika still staring at me from the dishwashing room.
That night I started to think about Moriyasu a bit more and wondered why anyone would want to transfer here.
