I am not sure if I understood the intention of your post right, so please correct me if I am wrong. You seem to "criticise" the line-up, but not the festival as such. Of course everyone favours different groups, so for me there is no point in arguing about it. What matters is that for yourself you find plenty of groups you like, to make you enjoy the day(s). Then thhe points you make are reasonable and also apply to me. (I am there for my favourite groups, not so much to see new ones.)
What I miss in your depiction is the atmosphere of a festival which makes them special compared to usual idol lives, like the one you posted. In my opinion those are too different to compare. As you had attended the festival at Mount Fuji you should know what I mean. Groups generally appear several times on EACH day, it is outside instead of a confined, closed up location, many stages, better event space in terms of space,...

^ Not sure I had any real intention, just kinda rambled on. But yeah, you are right, maybe the point is not the exact line-up of the groups, per se, but the whole atmosphere and location and whatnot of a festival and all the things surrounding it. So those kindof aspects are the interesting thing about it. Gotcha  :thumbsup

I think I'm often confused about what people call festivals as well, as things like the large Idol Koushiens at Studio Coast are somewhere in the middle between an outdoor festival and a normal kindof idol event with lots of groups (and perhaps multiple venues).

True. The word festival for Idol Koushien and the like is not the best one. I just use it as the Japanese tend to call it that. There is also no equivalent in English I can think of. But only the likes of TIF are "real" festivals.

They added some more names to TIF today, Jyujyu, Malcom Mask Maclaren are the ones I remember.

She was always going to stay, ever since it was announced Shirai would leave they said they would add new members.

I remember she said that. But you never know with idols. ;)
Found it strange as well that she did completely new solo songs. But nice to see that such intermediate actions are possible.

Rezar, that link works just fine. it's you trying to access internet on a potato that is the problem.  :P

rofl Up Up on Avex? I'd never fear about that, it's so random and unthinkable... at this point, I think they'll likely stay on a minor label till the very end of the group. anyways, I'd NEVER want to see a group I like signing with Avex again, after what happened with you-know-who.

wow gotta admit the new TIF announcement is pretty interesting. several interesting groups (as Ryutist, Tenkou Shojo and 2o Love) and a load of small quite unknown names. must be cool for them to participate in an "important" festival as this... btw what's that mixi kimidake thing? a separate stage inside the festival for those groups? if so, Level7 in is a nice addiction too. Oshirino  :jerk:

on the festivals/lineups discussion, when I (talking very specifically about me now) talk about and compare festivals, I try to use common sense to define 'this is a good one' or not. not my personal taste. the festival may not have a single group I like, but if they have several relevant (sales and fanbase numbers wise) groups, the festival DO is a nice one. of course here and there I throw some quick tongue in cheek posts like that one about idol-nation, but if we are really into discussing it seriously, you should factor more the weight carried by the groups participating and not your personal taste. and I personally have no problem with the using of the word festival... the way I see, doesn't matter if it's indoor or outdoor, has one or seven stages, offers other activities or just the shows themselves... as long as the concert has four or more groups performing, I see it as a festival.

Reading both the Japanese and English, I have no idea what the kimidake thing is because they didn't really say what they were going to have at TIF. So they have a special website and they will be having events but don't mention what those events could be. Typical press release in the style of "such and such group announced their new single/album" and that's all the news is.

Even with Idoling gone, Rurika, Yurika/Ruka's group, and Rena's new group got invited. Plus Umeko and Hitomi for something. Please don't let any of those groups perform before/after anyone I want to see otherwise the "ringers" will be camping out for hours!

I wonder who the "big name" guests are going to be this year. If things go as they have been the past few years, HKT and maybe SKE? NGT?

Off topic: Already mentioned why I dislike groups signing with avex but, any Sony label is also bad since they block access to all their content yet keep sending people to do overseas lives.

It does now, it didn't at the time.

But no matter how good a festival is organised or located and despite the inclusion of "important" groups: If I don't have much groups present there that I like, the festival itself is uninteresting to me. At least this was the basis for the discussion between me and Jul3rd: Comparing two festivals we could consider to attend.
Your point of view, Tsutomo, is still valid, as you view it from an objective standpoint, like for example we did in this thread when comparing TIF and @JAM.

The wording "festival" has a different association for me. In Japan I would mention Summer Sonic or Aomori Rock Festival as examples. The other regular idol events are something else. Also something that is held every other day and is basically a repeat of a show that happened just days before, loses its specialness and attraction (for me). Hence f.e. TIF is also different to evalute.

hmmm maybe because english is not my native language and I live here, so the use of the word doesn't bugs me. like at all. maybe I'm simply used to it.

I comprehend your point of view but then, how would you call these other festivals (that you don't consider as festivals)? just "shows"? "gigs"? I dunno, I think it's easier this way it is... they already use the wording "teiki kouen" (regular show) for events that take part regularly like every week or month so they do have some separation between different kinds of shows out there...

you know what? the thing that really bothers me is when you have an one-man or two-man... but they decide to put another group out there (as opening act) so you have to endure it even if 1- you don't want 2- you didn't pay for it 3- you dislike that group 4- that kills your mood 5- it has almost no relation to the main group coming after. think about something like those Idol Renaissance shows before the Up Up - Lyrical School two-mans. THAT sucks.

I think there are two problems (for me) here:
- festivals in Europe are associated mostly with outdoor concerts consisting of a hge number of groups. Often lasting several days and the possibility/requirement to sleep on the festival area. They last through the whole night, but this is not important here.
- The every week "teiki kouen" and regular "taiban" shows in a closed-up venue is not really a part of European music scene, at least not in the bigger public. At least I have no knowledge of those. Here shows with several groups would simply be called "Rock Night with..." or something.
It is not the word festival itself that bothers me, but more the fact that there is no clear distinction which leads to confusing discussions. It is no criticism for the event at all.

Two-Man, Three-Man and the like can be quite strange in their line-up, especially with idols. I assume this is in part due to the fact that many idol fans don't really seem to care about the music style, but instead only the girls appearances? My strangest Three-Man was with Maison Book Girl as Opening Act, and Rhymeberry, Bellring Girls Heart and Moso Calibration - 4 completely different styles and different agencies. But I can't say it bothers me. I am just to except groups on stage I don't care about. Also one advantage is, that fandoms hardly overlap, which means better space and front view at the individual shows for the fans.

went there yesterday. it`s been a while since my last (japanese) idol show, so it was refreshing. and surprising to see most girls still remember me.

the best part of the festival was undoubtedly Up Up's last performance with water balloons, water guns and... bikinis.  :twothumbs Konatsu was so hot, damn! just seeing her in that bikini was already worth the ticket price, the hotness, the huge lanes, the waiting, everything!

Have you seen the new map? I would post it but I am on mobile now. Seems to be the My Navi Stage again, though different name. Haven't had the chance to check in more detail so far.

Update:

So nothing really changed, apart from adding the outdoor Ship Stage to cancel an indoor stage. Nice idea, as always from TIF organisers
Any news on installations of shadowy/cool locations?
