Well, it's been an interesting week of Konno's skit characters.
Through the scripted silliness of Hello! Morning Theatre, the girls got a chance to become someone else, usually with cute and hilarious results.
Whether their roles were based on real kinds of people (police officers, salarymen, housewives, etc), or something really off-the-wall (penguins, sparrows, pidgeons, devils, etc), there was always a kind of magical quality to the proceedings.
Somehow the tone of the whole thing found a balance between pure silliness and real storytelling, with an occasional bit of social commentary thrown in.
The result was something distinctly surreal while at least somewhat resembling reality.
At least that's how it normally was...
After a few years of watching these things, I thought I was immune to whatever silliness they could muster.
Then I came upon a series of skits they did in 2004 that just really blew my mind.
But that will have to wait. First, I'd like to share some tamer fare:

Before I get to some of the weirder stuff, here's something that's at least partically grounded in reality. Once again, Konno has the role of a servant to the Shirayuri family, at least as their top maid or something. The entire feud between the Ganko family and the Shirayuri family always seemed to me like a kind of class struggle. They were among the most fleshed-out of all the skit characters, with some very detailed mannerisms and habits.

Moving on to the more fantastic of the skits, we have the train station fairytale-land stories.
Though you couldn't be expected to meet someone like some of these characters in everyday life, at least they explained where they came from and how they got there.
Even with a Tengu in the mix, somehow this doesn't quite cross the line into madness.

Finally, the part you've been waiting for. While you could normally expect most characters to be stereotypical models of real people, various animals, or even fairytale characters, sometimes there came a role that just makes you go "What the hell?".
For me, this last skit does that.

Yes, that's Konno as Frodo. Yes, Frodo from Lord of the Rings.
No, I don't know what the writers were smoking, and I don't have any either.
There's just no explanation as to how he got there.
If you haven't seen this one before, I guarantee that by the end, you too will be going "What the hell?". I mean that in the best way possible. It's just hilariously random.

And that concludes Konno Skit Character week. I hope you enjoyed it.
