The city of Fukuoka was ordered to pay 2.2 million yen in damages to a 12-year-old boy and his parents Friday for his physical and emotional suffering at the hands of a bullying teacher at the public elementary school he attended.

The teacher was a right royal prick, telling the kid his blood was tainted, he was a mutt, and it would be better for everyone if the kid just killed himself. And everyday the student went to class, the teacher would ask why he was still alive.
2.2 million yen is a pathetically small amount, considering lawers from all over the country band together to stick up for this poor kid.
Hits close to home too, since I'm a westerner in Japan with a Japanese wife. If my future kid was every treated like that, I would want his fuckin' head.

Yeah. It does point to some of the xenophobia in Japanese society as Guchi mentioned.

If I married a Japanese woman, I'd want us to live in Canada or the US. There's a lot less racism and not the same stigma for mixed couples and children.

The quick rule of thumb is always to take off the last two zeroes:

2,200,000 -> $22,000

It's not accurate, but it works.

Definitely. (american girl with japanese fiance) And my fiance wonders why I get so worked up everytime I even have a thought about if we were to live on his family's land in rural Ibaraki.
We're lucky the kid didn't listen to him and just off himself. Must be the American blood in him that kept his backbone in place

Racist teachers are the worst kind. It's unfair for that kid to get that kind of treatment.
