He probably did something stupid there (like owing some Thai gangsters some money or something), and he confessed to the murder so that he could get the hell outta there faster.

There's no doubt, the guy confessed just to get out of doing jail time in Thailand. He knew his DNA wouldn't be a match, and the charge wouldn't stick, but he's also counting on them not sending him back, which of course they won't. But, since doing time in a Thai jail gives him a major case of the heeby jeebies, they should.
