u can stand up the ps3 without the vertical stand u know. jsut make sure the air holes are facing up!

for some reason, sony lacks RPGs for the ps3. while 360 has been getting decent amount. (I want to play lost odyssey so bad)

but you should check out valkryia chronicles, folklore and eternal sonata (pretty much the best rpg so far for the ps3)

The front of the console is pretty close to the PS2 – power on and eject buttons and a couple USB ports.  No controller or memory card ports though – but they're not needed because of the hard drive and Bluetooth. Still, this means I can't transfer over saves from my PS1 games.

Correction: you can indeed transfer files from PS1/PS2 memmory card to your PS3. But you need an USB device for that. I've seen it but for me it has no purpose. My PS3 is japanese, and backwards emulation are entitled to the region of the original games. As I don't have any japanese ps1 games, nor ps2 games (if ever one day sony puts backwards emulation for ps2 for those ps3's that don't have it) it's not gonna be much use for me anyway.

About RPGs, they are my thing too.
I've just beat Valkyria Chronicles this past week and I'll tell you, it's awesome ! Too bad it didn't get much attention when it was released.
But the RPGs are coming: White Knight Chronicles is coming Feb 2nd, Star Ocean the Last Hope Internation will also be on Feb, and for me, the best RPG this gen (so far) was Tales of Vesperia and it's coming to PS3. It was already released in Japan, and its first DAY there on PS3, sold more that it has sold every where else in the world combined for the 360. I beat, loved it, and I'll buy it again for the PS3 (it has TONS of new stuff and extras).

And just so you won't feel bad, Lost Odyssey is a major disappointment. Frame rate is weird, the areas you walk seem small (like in old RPGs), the voice acting was horrible. I mean, not terrible like Star Ocean 3 for PS2, but it was sub par, in every language, and believe me I tried 3 of those (English, Japanese). Sure this game could help you pass your time until you wait something good, but it's not worth being sad for not having played it.

lol really? the storyline seems cool. but i think the frame rate issue has something to do with the 360's disc space capability no?  :nervous

i could transfer ps2/ps1 save files to the ps3 but u need to buy a memory card adapter or something.

That's pretty glowing. I'll admit I was a little turned off the game by Yahtzee's review. I'll give it a second look once I'm done Uncharted 2 and AC2.

I'm currently thinking about buying some Japanese DVDs, which are Region-coded 2, I think.  Also Blue-Ray DVDs, which some are region-free.  now I heard that the PS3 are region-free, that means I can buy games from Japan or elsewhere and play it on my US-based PS3, rite?
If it's true, can I play region coded dvds/blue-rays on PS3?

Right.

No.

However, the regional lock-outs for Blu-Rays are different than those for DVDs.

In particular Region A includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. This means a US Blu-Ray player will play all Japanese and Korean Blu-Ray movies. You miss out on Europe, Africa and the rest of China.

Also, according to Wikipedia: "Some current estimates suggest 70% of available Blu-ray (movie) discs from the major studios are region-code-free and can therefore be played on any Blu-ray Disc player, in any region."

thanks very much, asmodai.  now I can buy PS3 games with no doubts and no hesitation when I buy it overseas, like JapanVideoGames, YesAsia, etc.

and on DVDs and BRs, I'll keep an eye out for those region codes...

DOUBLE POST!  sorry, but it's IMPORTANT:

Transferring one saved game data from one PS3 into another PS3, how would this affect your game, trophies and data of that game?

I'm trying to do that with one, and when I tried to overwrite it (already have my own saved data back up), it say that another person data may not work on another PS3 and some things won't work or something.

I wanna know more about, where could I get some complete info?  for future reference so that I won't mess up my PS3, trophies and saved game.  If I do play on another saved game data, I won't earn a trophy, but if I reupload my own saved game data, would it still read as another person data or my own data? and would I still be able to earn trophies on that saved game data?

Note: just for safe keeping, I'd regularly back up my game data onto a usb, then to my pc.

Hmm.. I have the big, fat ps3 version.. 80 GB. Yeah it is pretty big, but for me.. that doesn't really matter. I have enough space if I put him vertically. It has these things where it can stand on and in that position, it doesn't take alot of space at all. As for games... they're lovely. HD, the sound... I wuvv it! I liked Mirror's Edge alot and now I just started to play Rock band 2 (is hard to find in Europe). I don't have many ps3 games though, I play more on the pc. But yeah.. ps3 is awesome cause it can play music, you can watch dvds and bluerays, you can create photoalbums and those look pretty nice actually. Also I luvv playstation network, it's free whoo! Also the playstation store is easy to use. Only thing I don't like is that it sometimez randomly freezes. Not ingame, usually when I'm at the menu. Also when I'm browsing the internet, the browser freezes. My ps and ps2 never had any problems.. so I'm a bit disappointed that the ps3 has sum minor issues. But other then that, I think it's a very good console and I'm glad I bought one.

Yeah, it's weird, because mine never had any sings of problems.
Mine is the "Cloud Black Edition 160gb" which came with the Final Fantasy Advent Children Complete. I bought in April 2009.
What versions are yours ?

120gb Slim. It's not a frequently problem, and it pretty much only happens when exiting applications so I don't care much.

Unlike the PS2 and Wii, the PS3 doesn't have a vertical stand. Like I said, it's a space hog. It's the fat guy on the airplane who sprawls out over the armrests and fully reclines his seat.

I was in the shops and saw a vertical stand. Not sure how new it is. If Australia has it, everywhere else should :)

The PS3 also apparently has a primitive form of motion detection. The only game I've found so far that uses this is Little Big Planet.

Honestly, the six-axis motion was pretty much a worthless feature in LBP save for the fun of hitting other people's sacks (mind the pun). A game where it's pretty well implemented is Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. The incorporation of six-axis motion is definitely there, with you having to use it several times with various gadgets. I think that was one of the highlights of that game actually, from reading reviews. It was my first game on PS3 and I didn't play it after getting more games so I can't really compare it to anything, but it was an impressive feature I thought.

Quote
I enjoyed the demo for LittleBigPlanet, though it seems like the sort of game that could rapidly become repetitive so I'm still on the fence about it.

I have Little Big Planet and yes, it gets repetitive, although I found mostly only as I neared the end of the game, which works fine for me. If I could go back in time and had the choice of whether to buy LBP or not, I would definitely buy it. I really admire the genius behind it. It's simple, good for all ages and gives the player a certain power that they just don't have in other games. In a sense, it's more hands-on in comparison to other games, in the way that you can continue to customise your sackperson, create your own maps and even decorate the pre-made ones. For some reason, I kind of connect it to the game Okami on PS2, in which often to complete objectives and reach new places, you were required to 'paint' paths and the like. I only ever played the demo of Okami and now I can't find it in shops, but I enjoyed the creativity. The multiplayer feature of Little Big Planet, for me, was annoying because in basically all of the levels in story mode, there were some objects that you could only get if you had 2+ players and I never really had anyone to play it with. Although I think you can play story mode online as well, so that would probably fix that.

Basically, don't get Little Big Planet if it's something you want to play over and over again because after playing through it once, you won't feel compelled to play it again.

wow, a PS3 review in 2010! cool~

I'm originally from Australia too~ (10+ years...)
What new PS3 games are out right now?
Back then, they came out soooo slow. Like UK slow +30 days.

LBP is definitely one of the top3 games on PS3.
As for the areas that need 2 players to get to. You could try using 2 controllers yourself to control 2 sackboys.
Hell, I even used 3 controllers at the same time for some areas.

Hmmm, mine doesn't auto reboot though. I hope that doesn't happen too much with your Ps3

Nope, it's pretty rare, and since it only happens on exit I don't consider it to be much of an inconvenience - at most 5-6 seconds extra when switching between games.
