He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is understood Mr Irwin was killed around midday, Eastern Australian time.

Crikey! I just heard about this, but thought it was a joke. What a shame. I used to watch that show all the time.

Tragic, Yes. Shocking, No.  It's like hearing a hotrodder dying in a car crash, really.  At least he died doing what he loved.

Too bad. I thought he'd be eaten by a crocodile. But it seems that stingrays are dangerous as well. RIP.

Damn, here I was thinking the guy was near immortal when it comes to handling dangerous animals. Always thought he was entertaining whenever I saw him with his larger than life personality. R.I.P.

I Didn't know that stingrays were that dangerous... R.I.P Steve. Cairns is a beautiful city (I've been there before so i know). At least he was around beautiful scenery and died doing what he loved.

They have a barb at the end of their tail for defence.

am i the only person who's not sad about this? i mean, sure, anyone's death is to be mourned, but Steve Irwin? purveyor of negative, reactionary stereotypes about Australians?

very few of us aussies are thicko bushies who live in the outback, rousing crocs for a living - none of us, i'd be willing to bet. and yet he made a career out of feeding this sterotype. more power to him as an individual for being able to make shedloads of money doing so - but i won't miss him.

RIP steve..

he was a cool guy and a fellow australian.. my sympathies for his family..

hes the type of guy who would want us to think stingrays were still safe just so we could experience what he loved..

farewell my friend

No! I can honestly say I wasn't a fan at all, and never watched that show. Coming to think about it, I only remember seeing him on TV twice, and both times because he screwed up. Once was when he dangled his new born baby infront of a croc, and the other when he touched some near extinct penguin or someother rare thing.
While Steve, just like Paul Hogan, help to promote Australia, they both really gave the wrong impression of a typical Aussie male, cause we just aren't like that at all.

@idiotboy: Didn't know you're an Aussie too.
