TOKYO --With shouts of "Banzai," Japanese celebrated the birth Wednesday of the imperial family's first male heir since the 1960s, a development that squelched hopes of reform to allow women on the throne.

Yeah I was wondering why the first thread was put in the H!P Joint instead of here. Then I noticed that the person who started it is a newbie and thus probably just didn't realize that it should go here. Oh well...we could always ask the mods to merge and move the two threads here.

I doubt very much if it's actually 'over', if we mean the discussion about the imperial succession. Koizumi's proposals a few months ago won a fair bit of support, and although there will be some short-lived satisfaction with the provision of a male heir at this stage, the misogynistic nature of the decrepit views of the Imperial Household Agency will not be tolerated forever by younger Japanese. It is inevitable that the male succession will be overthrown sooner or later if the imperial house is not to become an antiquated irrelevance.

Let's hear it for Aiko!!!

By the way, my personal favourite among the Japanese royals is Princess Kako, and it will be interesting to see her blossom in the coming years. She is much prettier than her older sister Mako and seems to have more charm. I'll be posting a separate thread for her soon.
