In The Dead of the Night [PG-13]
Nacchi/Gocchin

I've had this on my harddrive for at least ten months now, and yesterday night I finally decided to finish it.

So, enjoy the fluffiest piece I've ever written ... it's going to be my last for some time :P I hope it won't take too long till internet is running at my new place!

*

Somewhere in the hazy mist between sleep and wake, Natsumi feels the mattress dip behind her, something that should startle her, but she’s used to it by now, it has happened too many times before for her to be surprised and so she opens her eyes against the darkness, turns onto her other side and opens her arms, waiting.

She doesn’t have to wait long, though, and a few seconds later she feels a body slip into her embrace, a familiar warmth pressing into her body while a pair of slender hands wraps around her shoulders, clinging to her like an injured child.

Her heart throbs as the sobs that reach her ear become softer, and softer, until they finally die down and she feels Maki relax, completely, and sleep claims her exhausted body.

They never really talked about any of this, why Maki comes to her every couple of nights, what drives her from her bed so often, and Natsumi can only guess, hoping that someday Maki will tell her.

Until then, she’ll be the friend the younger girl needs, wrapping her up, comforting her, helping her find rest.

If only she knew, Natsumi thinks with a bitter smile and presses the girl closer for a moment before putting more distance between them, until they are barely touching.

If only Maki knew what she was doing to her in all those nights.

How she lays awake because her heart is pounding in her chest, how she listens to their breathings, feels each and every touch like a shock.

She wonders how Maki’d react if she knew how often she had been tempted already, tempted to lean closer, to touch her lips to Maki’s in a soft kiss, secretly savouring the taste of a forbidden longing.

That’s why it’s safer not to keep the girl too close.

Let her fall asleep in her arms and then push her away, because it’s become harder and harder with each night that Maki’s showed up with red-rimmed eyes and tears on her cheeks.

Yet even keeping her away has become harder over the last few times, because somehow Maki seems to reach for her, even in her sleep, just like tonight, and Natsumi feels an arm drape itself across her stomach, a head close to her shoulder, and she stiffens as warm breath tickles her bare skin.

She tries to move away again, but the hold Maki’s got on her is strong.

So strong, actually, that breaking it would mean waking the younger girl and Natsumi would have to explain herself then ... and she just couldn’t do that.

So she lays still, as still as she can, while she feels her body heat rising and the tears stinging in her eyes because it just is too much and not enough at the same time and while she knows she shouldn’t, she can’t help her gaze drifting to Maki, tousled hair hiding most of her face.

Natsumi knows that face so well, could draw it with her eyes closed.

She looks so fragile, sleeping next to her, so different from the girl she knows by daylight, and Natsumi reaches out to brush some of the hair away, reveals the still childish features underneath, traces the tip of a finger from her temple to her chin, up and down, once, twice, until she cups her cheek in her hand.

It’s the same situation she’s been in countless times before and again it would be so easy.

Hold her close, lean forward, kiss her, and this time, Natsumi feels herself crossing the distance between them even while her mind screams for her to stop.

Yet for the first time she doesn’t listen and she feels herself shaking as she brushes Maki’s lips with her own, unmoving, the sensation of the kiss so overwhelming that it’s hard to think of anything else right now.

So overwhelming that she doesn’t even notice the movement against her mouth at first, a pair of soft pink lips moving against her own, and when she finally does, there are wide dark eyes staring at her.

She pulls away with a gasp, letting go of the girl in her arms, scrambles to the other side of the bed hastily and buries her face in her hands, the thought of having to look at Maki now making her head spin and her stomach turn.

Maybe she’ll just go away, Natsumi thinks, hopes, even though she knows that it won’t happen, because, in fact, Maki hasn’t moved at all since her hasty retreat, she can tell, because the mattress would give it away, and so she waits, waits for something, anything, to happen.

But nothing happens and so she lifts her head, peeks at the other girl and seeing the state she left Maki in is enough to make her blood boil harder, a moan escaping her throat as she stares at her, lips a deeper red than usually, plump, cheeks flushed, hands clutching at her heaving chest.

She looks like Lolita, so much younger than her actual age, and the thought alone makes Natsumi feel like a pervert, her feelings driving her crazy because she’s never felt something like this before, such a hunger, such a longing, and maybe it’s the novelty of these feelings, maybe it’s the age, maybe it’s the fact that Maki is a girl, but Natsumi is scared, scared to death, and so utterly helpless.

“Nacchi?”

A voice reaches her ear, fluttering, faint, and Natsumi hears the questions hidden inside so loud as if Maki actually said them out aloud, and not only her name.

But the answer to these questions is stuck in her throat and no sound leaves her lips.

Instead she averts her eyes, hands wrapping around her knees in a protective manner, yet Maki’s voice sounds again, this time closer, right in front of her, and fingers wrap around her chin, lifting her head, forcing her to look at the other girl.

She doesn’t even find the time to close her eyes before Maki’s lips are on hers again, bare legs straddling her own bare thighs, and the fingers are moving from her chin to her cheek, cupping it, holding Natsumi’s face in place, as if she’d shrink away from the kiss.

But Natsumi’s reaction is far from that.

It does take her some time to register that they are kissing, and that this time Maki initiated the kiss, but when she does, she can feel herself moving even before she knows that she is moving.

Hands tangle in Maki’s hair, combing through the dark strands just as much as keeping her close, deepening the kiss, the tips of their tongues brushing, and Maki moans as they break apart, gasping for air.

Silence hangs over them, the only sound that of their labored breathings, and Natsumi doesn’t know whether to cry or to laugh as the realization sets in of what has just happened, what it means and how much it will change.

Because suddenly it has become serious, her dreams turned reality, and they're both old enough to know of the consequences that could follow this kiss, if anyone but them should ever know of it.

It would be a disaster.

Yet now, right now, as Maki wraps herself around Natsumi, legs around waist and arms around neck, everything else but this is far far away and she feels herself shaking nervously, happily, as she buries her face in the crook of Maki's neck to hide the ridiculously wide grin on her lips.

"Nacchi ..." Maki sighs right next to her ear and Natsumi thinks that her nickname has never sounded as beautiful as right now, rolling of Maki's lips, laden with so many emotions.

“Gotsuan …” she tries in return, and it’s a different name all of a sudden, familiar and new at the same time, and it tastes sweeter than anything Natsumi can imagine.

Another sigh escapes the younger girl, sending a shiver down Natsumi’s spine, and she breathes in deeply, the scent of Maki’s shampoo filling her nostrils as she slowly lifts her head and looks at Maki.

Bright eyes stare right back at her, every trace of tears and agony gone, replaced by a soft glow that’s never been there before and Natsumi feels herself come undone as she feels hands encircling her neck and pulling her in again.

When their lips touch in their third kiss, every ounce of rational thought slips from Natsumi’s mind and all that’s left is warmth, light, sensation - and then – bliss.

Yay for this pairing. It's always so hard for me to think of Nacchi with anyone, but this just works so well. And wow, this is barely fluff. It's more like angsty love. But so cute at the end.

Great as always and hope the move goes well!
