Not so sure about that. I don't drink but my uncle did, and smoked.. he lived until about 96? Or was it my grandmother? Well all the same. Although I wouldn't recommend drinking or smoking it seems to have strange affects on lifespans depending the person. But you only live once, right?

I would not be so quick to buy that reason either. :scratch

Miyazki and his family may believe that abstinence from alcohol has led to his longevity...but there are other factors that are considerably more important. Genetics, stress, environmental condtions, lifestyle, diet and exercise most likely are significantly more important to his ability to reach the ripe old age of 111.

My grandmoother takes a shot of rum (she thinks it helps the appetite) before supper and she is well into her eighties - strong and healthy. She has led a very low stress life, she is very active (does tai chi and stretching each day) and eats a well balanced healthy diet (no red meat for her). I wouldn't be suprised if she goes another 20 years...:thumbsup

This URL provides a different point of view on alcohol use and health with many medical references:

Stupid cliches are sometimes true: There are always two sides to every story and what is right for one person may not be right for another.

The one I wonder about is how Okinawans have the longest lifespan of anyone on the planet, and yet their diet is filled with pork?

Could be, as studies have shown that booze can kill brain cells.

Still, I ain't giving up my weekly rounds of Sapporo beer at Aki-no-No every Friday...

i'm all for longevity, but i believe one should be able to enjoy lives many pleasures with out restrictions, do what you please, do good and morally right things, and you shall be rewarded in the end... lots of friends and a happy ending :D

Shut Up. If I wanted to listen to an arsehole, I would have farted.
