Japan's Sex Trade is cleaning up and cleaning house
« on: November 03, 2006, 07:34:44 PM »
According to a government survey, there are over one million sex related businesses and websites operating in Japan today. The Tobita Shinchi district of Osaka City is certainly one of the most well known in the country. It is expected that in 2007 the sex industry in Japan will surpass the car manufacturing industry in terms of gross capital net gains.

My favourite quotes from the article :P :

Quote
These pleasure palaces once run by shady Japanese yakuza are now being run by multi-million dollar corporations and those who have visited in the last couple of years are shocked by the outstanding level of drop-jaw beauties and quality service. One friend of mine who has recently visited told me how suprised he was mentioning that they are just as beautiful as any idol on television

Quote
Business owners are now trying to cater to new market. Gaijin! Male tourists who have come to Japan from North America or Europe obviously have a language barrier not to mention other obstacles to face if they tried to access the palaces of pink. And so a consortium of owners in the Kansai area are trying to make it easier. They are hiring English speaking girls both as workers and front desk attendents to help ease the curious foriegners into their rooms, and into their pocketbooks.

A country with the dwindling population has a high sex industry.  How IRONIC.

i've heard that there are tons in shibuya, and its like the world capital of the sex industry.

nowadays, everyone knows english, at least a little, and they probably know all the dirty words anyway, so i don't think there'll be too much of a language barrier problem

Youve obviously never tried to teach those kids english.  Im not teaching at the lowest level highschool in the area, im teaching in one of the higher low level highschools BUT my god some kids dont know anything.  They all have taken AT LEAST 3 years worth of english and some kids dont know how to spell their own name in english! (And these are second year kids, that means theyve taken like almost 5 years of english and are 16-17 years old)

They dont know words like "for",  or easy, and could not tell the difference between what and where... I had a lesson that was essentially ad-libs, i even gave them the word to put in the box and they still could not do it.  I mean its painful and really really sad at times. The extent of some peoples english knowledge will be "no", "i cant speak english", or "no english", etc.  Ill be honest you can manage sans japanese in japan'(if you stay in the big cities)  but going their expecting nearly all Japanese people to have at least basic English skills will be in for a suprise.

Amen. The English system is actually really poor, most students I meet come in generally able to say "yes" "no" and, if you're lucky, "like". If they can say "My name is..." well that's just a bonus! There are very few people I've met outside of my school who can speak any English (or don't even freak out when they see the foreigner coming).
