During the 1970s, when South Korea was governed by hardline authoritarian decree, government agents armed with rulers prowled the streets measuring skirt lengths in search of violators of the country's indecency laws.

Police could even arrest women for their choice of fashion if it were deemed to risquй. That same indecency law exists today, if only on the books, as police have long surrendered their pursuits of arresting women in miniskirts and daisy-dukes short-shorts. Nevertheless, the South Korean government is in the process of revising the law to match the fashion motifs of the day.

They're everywhere, but it really is good that South Korea can undo them.

didn't even know such a law existed. girls in miniskirts seem to be everywhere, and i've seen plenty in korea

I was going to say the same thing; I've never heard of such law. My friend Il-keyon is from South Korea and she goes to a private catholic school there. Polo shirt and a red/black plaid mini-skirt is her uniform. o_O

I must say it just seems like another one of those insane laws that countries come up with. How enforced was it ? was it just an excuse to arrest people if they wanted yet another reason to do so more than anything.

Poor South Koreans, while the law prohibitted them to wear sexy stuff. Hope they taken out this ridiculous law, and Miniskirt allowed. Hmmm.....we'll see more koreans with miniskirt in future...

although when i went to korea, for one girl who looked smoking hot in miniskirt, there were 3 who should be wearing sweat pants.. but same could be said for everywhere else in the world..
