Maybe you missed this part in the article:

Quote
She said the boy likes attention and has a history of bad behavior. He has shoplifted from stores and stolen money from her, she said. The boy has also been inching toward expulsion from school, she added, and even punched a police officer last month. He was arrested for disorderly conduct in that incident.

She hoped the arrest would be a wake-up call for him. She dreads getting a phone call someday reporting he's been killed.

The boy "showed no remorse" when the police came, the mother said.

"I'm trying to get him some kind of help," she said. "He's the type of kid who doesn't believe anything until it happens."

Waldrop said the women were seeking help with a problem child. "He is a disruptive, disorderly kid."

It sounds like this is simply another addition to his rap sheet.

After reading the article, the kid probably already had a juvenile record, considering

If he continues on this path of irresponsible behaviour, it'll be more and more likely that the mother will have to  face this particular fear:

She's not a grinch. She's a single mom who's probably at the end of her rope, so to speak, and who's scared about what type of person her son is becoming.

What a pathetic mother, calling the police because she hs no control over her own son. She should be the one getting help and a wake up call.

okay, if he punched a cop, and was charged already, why would getting the cops to come for petty larceny send a 'wake up call' to him?

methinks the mother is full of BS.

he may be a bad kid, but that's just f'ing dumb.

In case anyone missed it:

Quote
A mother convinced Rock Hill police to arrest her 12-year-old son after he unwrapped a Christmas present early.
Quote
When the boy's 27-year-old mother heard about the opened gift, she called police.
Quote
"He took it without permission. He wanted it. He just took it," said the 63-year-old great-grandmother.

Methinks that the thread title or opening post should say "READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE FIRST BEFORE YOU RESPOND", so that people who see this can find out the WHOLE story before they post.

So if you were a single mom with a kid on a really troubled path like this kid was, that showed no remorse for the bad things he'd been doing (like shoplifting and assaulting a cop), you'd be fine with it? O_o

Put yourself in her shoes. She's probably desperate and willing to try anything to try and get her son to turn his life around.

...When did I say I'd be fine with it? I think she needs to get some parenting skills and get control of her son and if she can't handle it she needs to get professional help. There are millions and millions of single mothers with troubled kids in this world. I'm saying, it seems pathetic to me that she feels the need to *call the cops* to get control over her son. She is responsible for her sons actions as the parent.

This shouldn't've been the "last rope".  It's a little bit too minimal of a charge for the boy to have been punished for, I think, even though he DID have a "criminal record".

And having him arrested for opening a present early is a great message, isn't it? I can imagine all of you defending this woman calling the cops on your kids for not eating all the cereal and stuff like that. My mom raised my sister an me all by herself, she was 17 when I was born, and she married my current father when I was 18, but she raised us by example, by showing us the right and wrong, and even if around me there were some dubious characters, my mom's teachings were strong enough to keep me on the right path. So I'm sorry, but this mom is just looking for an excuse to have somebody else take charge of the kid.

Bad kid and bad parenting... I just hope that kid never reproduces to continue the cycle as it seems to be getting worse with every generation >_> The sad thing is, he's probably going to get some random girl pregnant in the next couple years and probably abandon them or something. Which is probaby what happened to him...

I'm thinking that the grandmother was the one who raised the boy, while the mother tried to finish school and also worked. You can't just blame everything on the mother. She wasn't ready for this kid. And there must be plenty of factors that turned their situation this way. The mother doesn't know what to do so she calls the cops on him. Many people don't really want to seek help, because they want to believe that they could solve all their problems themselves even if what they're doing might be the wrong thing. I commend her for atleast trying something, as some parents just let their kids run around in the streets.

Anyways, I agree with shi. Somebody get Dr. Phil!!!

Not all kids are the same, thus its difficult to say what method works for which kid. Even if the parents portrays a good example at home to the kids and warn them what is good or bad, it all boils down to the kid himself. I've seen examples of good parents with good teaching skills and still unable to control their kids.

Who's Dr Phil anyway?
