Study shows body odor in men increases female arousal

A new study by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley found sniffing a compound found in male sweat can change mood, sexual arousal, physiological arousal and brain activation in heterosexual women.

BERKELEY - A chemical in male sweat can boost mood, brain activity and sexual arousal in heterosexual women, according to a new study released just in time for Valentine's Day.  The study offers the first direct evidence that humans secrete a scent that can affect the physiology of the opposite sex, said researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. Their findings were published this past week in The Journal of Neuroscience.

The study conducted last year involved 48 undergraduate women who took 20 sniffs from a bottle containing androstadienone, a compound found in male perspiration and other bodily secretions.  The researchers measured the women's levels of the stress hormone cortisol and compared them with the women's responses to a control odor. Cortisol levels in the women rose within about 15 minutes of inhaling the androstadienone scent and remained elevated for more than an hour, UC Berkeley researchers found.  They also discovered that blood pressure, heart rate and breathing increased, mood improved and sexual arousal was boosted.

It works the other way around too. My wife passed away in 1996 and I couldn't bring myself to get rid of any of her things. Last fall my sister put her foot down and told me 10 years was way too long to be holding onto that stuff. Of course, she was right. So, the next weeked we went down to my basement to deal with the stuff. When I opened the first box of clothes - that smell, wow! It just floored me. My sister saw the expression on my face, told me to go upstairs and she would handle things. An unbelievably powerful effect a decade later. Just amazing.

Wow, so after all, hindu tradition and asian tradition in general has been right for 4000 years? Because they believed that something in a person's odor could attract the opposite sex, and developed scents to increase that effect.... remember the "pheromones" sprays?

I have to agree with you there. The clothes that were in those boxes were clean clothes taken from her dressers and the closet. My mom tossed the clothes from the laundry hamper because she just couldn't bear to wash them. Yet my wifes scent still remained.
