Barkley: Bulls disrespected Del Negro

ESPNChicago.com

While the Chicago Bulls fought for their playoff lives on Tuesday night against the Boston Celtics, a story that broke about an altercation between Bulls vice president John Paxson and coach Vinny Del Negro had Charles Barkley taking aim at Chicago management.

Yahoo Sports first reported that Paxson grabbed Del Negro by the tie, jabbed him in the chest twice and seemingly challenged him to a fight after a game at the United Center against the Phoenix Suns on March 30. Paxson reportedly was upset that Del Negro exceeded the minutes for Joakim Noah, who has been battling plantar fasciitis for much of the season.

Tuesday's game was broadcast nationally on TNT, and Barkley, a studio analyst who has admitted he's friends with Del Negro, addressed the situation at halftime.

"The Bulls have disrespected Vinny Del Negro," Barkley said. "The report came out [earlier] this year that they have fired Vinny but couldn't find a replacement, and the Bulls didn't say anything about it. That's just bull.

"For some reason they don't like Vinny. But for all the injuries, and losing [Ben Gordon] to Detroit, if Vinny gets them to the playoffs, that's a good coaching job. He's done a good job in Chicago."

Barkley wasn't the only one who questioned Bulls management.

"If you're challenging your coach to a fight, that's crossing the line," said Barkley's TNT colleague, Kenny Smith. "If you get to the point where you can't have a civil conversation with someone to ask why you're playing someone, that's out of line."

Del Negro confirmed to TNT's Craig Sager that there was an argument and disagreement over Noah's minutes, but he wouldn't confirm that there was a pushing incident.

Paxson didn't return a message from ESPNChicago.com seeking comment. A Bulls spokesman said it's an organizational issue that will be handled internally.

McGrady says retirement a possibility

ESPN.com news services

Tracy McGrady is at a career crossroads, and he knows it.

The New York Knicks' swingman remains optimistic that an extensive training program this summer can help him regain the form that made him an NBA All-Star. But if his game doesn't return, he'll retire, he said Wednesday.

"If it don't happen this summer, I'll ride off into the sunset," McGrady told reporters before sitting out the Knicks' season finale, a 131-113 loss at Toronto.

"If I could go through another offseason of working my [butt] off, and I don't feel I'm getting any better, I can't see myself coming back playing the way I'm playing right now. I just don't see it happening," he said.

McGrady has played in just 65 games total the past two seasons after battling injuries and recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee. The last 24 of those games were played with the Knicks, who acquired McGrady -- and his expiring contract -- in a trade with the Houston Rockets in February.

McGrady scored 26 points in his debut with the Knicks, on Feb. 20 against the Thunder. But he cracked the 20-point plateau just two more times and finished the season averaging 8.2 points per game, well below his career 21.5 ppg scoring average.

"You know what, after I realized I had something in the tank -- there were some games I did play well -- I was, like, really trying not to get hurt," McGrady told reporters on Wednesday.

"[Coach Mike D'Antoni] knew I wasn't going to be the T-Mac he was used to competing against when he was in Phoenix," McGrady said. "I knew I wasn't going to be that, but it was good for me to finally get out there and see where I was at physically after missing 1½ years of basketball."

Still, McGrady is hopeful a summer of intense training will extend his career. He's a free agent and though his future in New York is doubtful, he hopes he can catch on with a contender next season -- or at least resemble the player who won a pair of NBA scoring titles.

"I feel confident that I will be able to go and not worry about calling it quits," he said. "It's just been too much of constantly just grinding and trying to get it back. Mentally, it took a toll on me the last couple of years. I don't want to go through that again.

"This summer, I will continue to work hard and get myself and get in good shape and pay the best money doctors can buy and physical therapists and everything to get myself where I need to be."

Bosh expected to opt out of contract

Associated Press

TORONTO -- Chris Bosh would gladly share his future plans, if only to guarantee himself a little privacy. However, the five-time All-Star insists he has no idea where he'll be playing next season.

Bosh is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract with the Toronto Raptors, leaving more than $17 million on the table, in order to join a free-agent class that could also include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Amare Stoudemire.

Bosh has said he expects to earn the NBA's maximum salary on his next contract, and whether he returns to Toronto or joins a new team is anyone's guess.

"Nobody knows, not even me," Bosh said Thursday as the Raptors cleaned out their lockers. "That's something only the future holds. Everybody keeps looking for answers. There are no answers right now. There will only be answers when it's time.

"I wish I knew," Bosh added. "I'd let everybody know so that everybody would leave me alone."

With so many big names on the market, Bosh knows plenty of people will be asking questions.

"The possibilities are endless," he said. "You can say, 'He's going here, he's going there, what do you think, what's your opinion?' It's good barbershop talk."

A seven-year veteran, Bosh averaged career highs with 24.0 points and 10.8 rebounds this year. His season ended two minutes into an April 6 game at Cleveland when he was accidentally elbowed in the face by Antawn Jamison. Bosh suffered two facial fractures and required nasal surgery.

The injury dealt a fatal blow to Toronto's playoff hopes. The Raptors lost that game and the next three, including a 104-88 home defeat to the Chicago Bulls on April 11, and finished one game behind the Bulls for the final playoff spot in the East.

Watching from the sidelines as a once-promising season went in the tank left Bosh feeling "listless."

"It's kind of a confusing feeling," Bosh said. "It's disappointing. It takes a lot of energy out of you. I just don't know what to do."

What he wants to do most is sign for a team that can deliver on his dream of playoff success before it's too late.

"I just want to win basketball games," Bosh said. "I want to play in the postseason, I want to advance. I've been playing seven years. It's time to start thinking about stuff like that. I know I'm still a young player but I remember when I got drafted guys that were 25 and 26, now they're on their last deals."

Guard Jarrett Jack, Bosh's college teammate at Georgia Tech, said loyalty and a love for the city of Toronto could be enough to keep Bosh with the Raptors.

"He loves playing here," Jack said. "I think he loves being the face of the franchise, loves having a place to call his team, and I think those are all incentives, if you want to look at anything, to be able to come back and play for the Raptors for a very long time."

Echoing the feeling of many Toronto fans, guard Jose Calderon said Bosh's departure is tough to consider.

"I cannot imagine the Raptors without him," Calderon said. "I've been here five years, always with him. We'll see."

General manager Bryan Colangelo is in New York for the league's Board of Governors meetings and is scheduled to deliver his postmortem on Toronto's season early next week.

When he sits down with Bosh, Colangelo can expect their contract talks to be amicable.

"No matter what happens, me and Bryan agreed to work together," Bosh said. "I think that's important. I respect him as a GM and he respects me as a player. No matter what you do, you always want to do good business in this league. We're always going to talk."

But once the talks are done, Bosh will have to decide how to handle what he calls "a life-altering situation."

"A friend of mine always tells me 'Man, you have the greatest problem, but I wouldn't want to be in your shoes,'" Bosh said.

Jackson fined for comments on Durant

By Dave McMenamin
ESPNLosAngeles.com

For the second time in two weeks, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has been fined $35,000 for publicly criticizing game officials; it was announced Thursday by Stu Jackson, the NBA's executive vice president of basketball operations.

Jackson was fined for comments made in reference to Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, the third-year forward who led the league in free-throw attempts with 10.3 per game this season. The Lakers tip off their first-round playoff series against Durant and the Thunder on Sunday.

"As far as the calls that he gets on the floor, I think a lot of the referees are treating him like a superstar; he gets to the line easy and often," Jackson said on Tuesday, prior to Los Angeles' game against Sacramento.

Boston's Kevin Garnett made a similar derisive claim after the Celtics' 109-104 loss to the Thunder on March 31, claiming the calls Durant was receiving made it seem like he was "Michael [expletive] Jordan."

Durant, informed of Jackson's comments on Wednesday, said he felt "disrespected" by the claim.

"Because it's taking away from what I do," Durant told The Oklahoman. "That's part of my game, getting to the free-throw line and being aggressive. If you say that I get superstar calls or I get babied by the refs, that's just taking away from how I play. That's disrespectful to me."

Jackson was fined earlier in the month for comments made after a game against San Antonio when the 64-year-old coach said the "referees turned against us" following technical fouls drawn by Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant. He also called out veteran official Bennett Salvatore by name and said, "with Bennett you don't know what you're going to get."

Kevin Durant responds to Phil Jackson's comments

By Brian Kamenetzky

Yesterday, I posted a video of Phil Jackson editorializing on the superstar treatment he says Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant receives from officials.

""As far as calls he gets on the floor, I think a lot of referees are treating him like a superstar," Jackson said (among other things). "He gets to the line easily and often."

Obviously there's a little gamesmanship, here. Jackson is at once a) trying to work the referees and create an atmosphere attaching greater scrutiny to calls involving Durant, and b) sending a warning to his own team to understand Durant is a free throw generating machine. Don't get wrapped up in whistles, play through them.

I left one out. As today's news shows, I need to add a "c."

Wednesday, Durant wrapped up his first scoring title as the Thunder earned their 50th win of the season, defeating Memphis 114-105. But before the spent a lot of time answering questions about Jackson's comments, growing increasingly fired up as the conversation went along.

Writes Darnell Mayberry of the Daily Oklahoman:

"..."I respect Phil Jackson,” Durant started. "It really doesn’t matter, to be honest.” But the longer Durant spoke, the more his true emotions surfaced. "Ever since KG said something, everybody’s been questioning how I get to the line,” Durant said, referring to Boston forward Kevin Garnett, who claimed after losing to the Thunder he thought he was playing, "Michael (expletive) Jordan.” "If you watch our games, you wouldn’t question it. The NBA should put us on national TV more, I guess.”

When asked whether Jackson’s comment fired him up more, Durant, "Yeah, it does.” "Because it’s taking away from what I do,” Durant said. "That’s a part of my game, getting to the free-throw line and being aggressive. If you say that I get superstar calls or I get babied by the refs, that’s just taking away from how I play. That’s disrespectful to me. I don’t disrespect nobody in this league. I respect every coach, every player, everybody. I never say anything bad about anybody else or question why they do this or do that. So for them to say that about me, I don’t even want to use no foul language.”

Durant said he doesn’t think Jackson’s comments will have any influence on how the officials call the series. "If the refs pay attention to that and change how they call things because of that, that’s terrible,” Durant said. "That’s terrible to the game of basketball and to us. If that happens, then (coach) Scotty (Brooks) could talk, too. Or any other coach could talk, too, just so the refs could switch everything up. But I doubt they do that. "They’re smarter than that, and they have more skills than that as refs. So I don’t really worry about it too much..."

How Durant responds against the Lakers is obviously an open question (assuming you're not in the crowd believing all things NBA-playoff related are pre-ordained), but Jackson absolutely knew we- the royal media "we"- would go straight to Durant and ask him for reaction to his comments. This is how we roll. Durant will be asked again as more national media get around the Thunder, and more still as the L.A. media gets access to him this weekend, too.

His free throw count has officially been placed on the Big List of Series Storylines.

In the end, none of this could make a lick of difference, nor is it going to be the biggest factor in determining which team advances. But to the extent it helps his team's cause, even if only around the margins, this sort of gamesmanship is well worth PJ's trouble. There's a real chance Durant starts to view calls/non-calls in a different way. Did I not get that whistle because Jackson complained? Are refs being influenced? He's being forced to think about it, at least off the court. I'm fairly sure PJ hopes he brings the luggage with him once the games start, adding another psychological layer to Durant's first playoff experience.

Given OKC's near total lack of postseason experience, it wouldn't surprise me to see more of this sort of thing from Phil.

Stir the waters, and see how the Thunder react.

Here's the vid:

NBA cap projection higher than expected

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks and other teams hoarding salary-cap space got some good news Friday when they were told at the league's Board of Governors meeting that the projected 2010-11 salary cap will be $56.1 million.

That figure was $2 million to $3 million more than most teams had been expecting, and for the Knicks it ensures they have enough cap space this summer to sign two maximum-salary free agents.

"That's a lot of money. That's good," said Knicks president Donnie Walsh, who attended the meeting to learn the results of the Knicks' draft position through a tiebreaker.

Because of the worldwide economic downturn, the league had warned teams last July to expect the salary cap to be significantly lower -- perhaps as low as $51 million.

Other teams that will be positively affected by Friday's news include the Nets, Heat, Wizards, Bulls, Clippers and Timberwolves.

This is pretty special, to THE best broadcaster in NBA history:

Fans can take a seat next to Hearn's statue

In the eight years since his death at the age of 85, Chick Hearn has had the street leading to the main entrance for Staples Center, the Metro Link Blue Line stop near the facility and an Encino post office renamed in his honor.

Tuesday, his stature has evolved into a statue.

A bronze likeness of the Lakers' Hall of Fame broadcaster, who called games for the team for 42seasons, will be unveiled in the Star Plaza near the ticket office during a ceremony Tuesday at 4:30p.m., prior to Game 2 of the Lakers-Oklahoma City opening-round playoff series.

No photos of the statue will be available until it's presented to the public.

Statues of the Lakers' Magic Johnson, the Kings' Wayne Gretzky and boxer Oscar De La Hoya currently share the Star Plaza territory - making this the first public Southern California shrine (other than the Hollywood Walk of Fame) dedicated to a sports broadcaster.

What's unique about this tribute is that the statue will be fan-friendly.

Hearn will be depicted sitting at a table with his headset on calling a game in front of a microphone, and there will be an empty seat next to him. Climb into the chair and have your picture taken. It's not only allowed, but encouraged.
