Congratulations on your solo debut!

Thank You!

Tomomi-chan, you earned your solo debut through a bit of luck,
right? Can you tell us about what led up to your solo debut?

There was a competition, “AKB no Gachi Uma”, in which
whoever earned the most points by guessing the correct
horse race winner won a prize, which we were told was an
appearance in a commercial. Looking back however, it
wasn’t just the CM, but a solo debut CD, a live performance
at the race tracks, a photo book release, and a solo radio
program. Having a solo debut has always been my dream so
I’m incredibly happy right now. When I won I was sort of like
“Huh? WHAT?”.

So you weren’t yelling and running around in circles?

Quite the opposite, actually. I didn’t know what to do.
In AKB48, there are usually stops in the middle of lives
to say “We have a big announcement!” and something
serious gets announced. In my case, we were at a
handshaking event when my manager explained to us
what was going to happen, everyone was just like “Oh,
Okay”. It was not a ‘yelling and running’ atmosphere.

So that’s how it was like…

Just before that Akimoto-san had asked me “This time,
why don’t you sing the CM song, Kasai?” and my heart
fluttered. Akimoto-san says a lot of things that make
hearts flutter so at first I didn’t take him too seriously,
but I soon realized that I was actually going to put out
a solo CD! Even now I feel like I’m in a dream.

So your solo debut single is titled “Masaka”?

Yep. It’s a soft and cute melody, when I first heard it I
thought “Ahh, this fits me” and even fans say “This is so
Tomo-chan!”. It’s not just me singing with my emotion, the
song incorporates happy moments and innocent love which
I think a lot of people can sympathize with.

It looks like a song that could transfer your luck and happiness to
the listeners

Even during recording I didn’t just put in effort to sing, I
tried to put in happy emotions so people who listen can
receive some.

Ahh, it looks like this time you’ve really seized the chance. I hear the
second song on the single “Watashi no Hikari” has lyrics written by yourself?

That’s right. To be honest, I was really worried at first. Until then
I’d never written words like this before. When I got back from the
solo live at the race track to change in my room, my manager just
came to me and said “Try and write the lyrics for this song.” So,
since it’s winter now and there’s Christmas and Christmas lights I
thought I would try and make it a wintery song. I thought “If I’m
getting this great opportunity to write lyrics for a song then I’ll write
them for my fans who’ve always supported me and cheer me on.“

The song really does convey your feelings well. It’s
almost like a Christmas present to your fans.

It’s a song with very special feelings put into it.
Even during recording I found myself
overwhelmed with emotion. To be honest, when I
wrote the lyrics I thought about putting in more
modern, cooler words, but I decided against it.

It seems like fans who listen to this might cry.

I worry about breaking out in tears when I sing this
live. Facing my fans I get overwhelmed with
emotion sometimes and might even end up
sobbing. Therefore, I’m trying hard to have lots of
no-crying practice. Speaking of songs with strong
feelings…the third song “Dakishimeraretara” and
fourth song “Candy” are AKB48 songs. In
particular, “Candy” is really popular with the fans.
This will be my first time to sing it solo.

“Masaka”s music video seems very cute!

I told the staff “I want to connect the video with foreigners
somehow.” and they said “no problem.” The filming with the
guys went from the afternoon until the early morning and
was a lot of fun.

The song has a generally very colorful feel to it. In the scene where
you have the “fashion show” in your room it feels like you’re letting
us into your everyday life.

It really is about my everyday life. In the MV I try a lot of
different fashion, change my hair a lot and try to be a cool
young lady. All to try and be the type of girl the guys in the
MV like.

Finally, what are your aspirations for next year?

This year was the beginning of my solo activities and
let everyone know I’m not just AKB48 but that I’m also
Kasai Tomomi. Now that I’ve been able to take hold of
such a huge opportunity and I’ve been granted a solo
debut, next year I plan to work hard and create great
songs to give back to my fans for their 7 years
cheering me on in AKB48.

Publisher apologizes for ‘inappropriate’ picture of Tomomi Kasai’s breasts

Kodansha, the publisher of the weekly Shukan Young Magazine, has issued a public apology for last week’s controversy over the intended printing of a topless picture of Tomomi Kasai, a former member of the idol supergroup AKB48. While the issue with the photo never hit the stands, the announcement of its delay because of an “inappropriate” picture led to a firestorm of debate over decency and child pornography.

The magazine tried to explain the delay as being due to the photo “containing an inappropriate expression,” but in actuality it showed a very young caucasian-looking boy cupping Kasai‘s breasts from behind. Apparently once again trying to side-step the attention around the photo, Kodansha’s apology was actually for the missing issue of the manga magazine and denying its readers the chance to enjoy it. Their explanation for the cancelled issue was due to a “system of insufficient checks prior to publication.”

Tomomi Kasai’s debut photo book, titled Tomo no koto, suki? (“Do you like Tomo?”), is scheduled for release on February 4th, and the alarming picture was to be used as its cover. Kodansha is also the publisher of the photo book, and the plan was for it to be advertised in last week’s issue of Shukan Young Magazine. The issue of the magazine has now been cancelled altogether, and Kodansha adds the photograph with the young boy has been pulled from the forthcoming book. Interestingly, Yahoo Japan’s auctions site has even banned the listing of the now-renown issue of the magazine, making it even harder for those young men who are desperate to track down a copy.

Funny, some of the news refer to her as ex-AKB48 member despite the fact she has not graduated yet.
Perhaps they took her announcement one month ago as a graduation
