The Leaders Path Towards the Future
Minami checked the schedule written up on her phone to assure she had no further recordings of shoots for the day. After confirming she was in the clear, she put on her baseball cap and stepped out of the recording studio & into the streets of Akihabara.
It was still early in the morning, and as she walked, she couldn’t help but to look at all the Election Posters and promotions for the AKB members regarding the 5th general election that were hung around everywhere. She smiled & even laughed at the comical poses some members had pulled off. Each poster of a member brought a smile to her face, since the picture was a representation of each individual. With elections rolling in only a month away, the members and fans were of course busy. She stopped by Murashige Anna’s poster, in which the young girl was doing her famous Mentaiko pose. Minami smirked, and said “maybe she will be my successor when it comes to failing.”
“I don’t know, you set the bar quite high miss failing queen,” a teasing voice said. Minami smiled knowing exactly who was behind her, and turned to be met with a smile she so often missed.
“That’s harsh Atsuko, are you saying I’ll never graduate from my failing title?” Minami feigned hurt.
“Well it’s one of your unique characteristics so I doubt it. But who knows, maybe with hard work you can outgrow it. Like you say, hard work will al....” before Atsuko could finish Minami walked over gave her a gentle peck on the cheek, making Atsuko blush at the small intimate action her best friend initiated.
“Thanks for coming to meet me, I know your busy,” Minami said and reached out to hold Atsuko’s hand, who in return gave her a reassuring grip.
“I told you its fine. I finished for the day just like you. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen each other, with you being busy with you solo debut and me with my filming. I’m glad we could meet.” Atsuko shifted her gaze to the Election posters Minami was staring at before. “It’s weird. Not seeing your picture up there with the others.”
Minami also turned to look and gave a small sad but determined smile. She’d thought carefully about it, and like many member, though all for their own reasons, she decided not to take part in this year’s election. “Weird? Really. I think they all look pretty good up there without me”
Atsuko frowned, “that’s not funny”
“It wasn’t a joke” Minami assured her as she started to gently pull Atsuko along by the hand, and continued to talk as Minami led them towards the direction of the AKB theatre. “I’m not saying I don’t think I’m valuable to the group, I know you’d scold and lecture me if I thought that way...Actually you’d also call Mariko sama and the others to scold me too” Minami laughed when Atsuko lightly punched her. “Remember when I called you to tell you I wasn’t running?”
“How could I forget, you suddenly call out of nowhere and practically shout that you aren’t taking part. You do know my hearing is important right?” Atsuko lightly scolded.
“Haha, yah sorry. I just wanted you to know first before the press officially released my decision to the public. You’re not still mad are you?”
“...No not mad. I was sad at first you made your choice without consulting me but...I get it. This was something you had to think about and decide on your own” When Minami stopped to look into Atsuko’s eyes, she saw no judgment, only love and understanding. Something that always did and will exist between the two.
“Yes. But you did help influence my decision in a way.” Minami admitted as she continued leading Atsuko around the street & the two stopped in front of the AKB theatre. “I told myself I have to think about the future. Mine and AKB’s. It’s not that I’m stepping down to just give the young members a chance. I won’t underestimate them like that. But I told myself that I have to start stepping forward, just like you did. Not participating will give me a chance to really focus on strictly leading the group until I know they’ll be okay...And soon enough I know they will be. It’ll also give me a chance to think about my future...About what I want to do after graduation.”
Atsuko listened carefully to the girl beside her. When Minami spoke like this, she always seemed larger than life itself. Minami kept her eyes focused on the sign of the theatre. However, she knew that no matter how strong the leader was that she was still scared, insecure and unsure in certain areas. But what made her strong is that she didn’t allow those things to cloud her vision of the future. “Everything will be okay Minami” she drew the short girl’s attention to her. “Everything will be okay” she repeated and flashed her brilliant smile.
Instantly Minami felt lighter. Atsuko meant what she said. She believed it, and so would she. Everything would be okay. She will be, AKB will be, and so will all the future graduates. This is what AKB has given them. Unlimited hopes and dreams. Bonds between people that would transcend time. She shared a unique bond with each member, & as she looked at the girl beside her, her irreplaceable partner, she knew everything would eventually work out. “Thank you Atsuko. For always putting up with me” Minami said, flashing a genuine smile for the first time that day.
“You’re welcome. Now, let’s go get something to eat I’m starving. Oh, and you’re paying. Also, I expect you to tell me all about your future graduation plans and you better not keep anything a secret. Even Yuko confided in me about her plans.” Atsuko pouted as she began to drag Minami by the hand this time.
“Woah slow down Atsuko”
“Well I have to know so I can make sure I’m not working that day to attend your graduation. Plus remember you promised we’d find a place to live together after you graduate from AKB. It’s good to start planning early”
“Hai hai” Minami said in defeat knowing she couldn’t go against her friend’s wishes. As Atsuko kept rambling on, Minami allowed another smile to grace her face. She was glad she had people to rely on. Especially the girl pulling her by the hand. No matter what, Atsuko would always be there for her, and Minami vowed to do the same. She glanced back one last time to the AKB theatre, and it seemed magical. For an instant, she could envision all her friends, including herself leading their dreams, while younger generations continued to keep AKB alive as they strived to learn their own dreams. Minami whispered her silent thanks to the theatre and sprinted ahead of Atsuko.
"come on slowpoke" Minami excitedly shouted back at Atsuko.
"You spaced out when I was talking didn't you!? Minami wait up, just for that you'll pay for dinner and every single movie I want to see" she shouted with mock anger as she chased after her friend.
