Chapter 4 Past is past? I guess so...
The bell is heard in an old small school, situated in between grain fields on the countryside. The next thing heard is the laughter of the many girls and boys, running outside the schoolbuilding, ready for an hour of playtime.
Most of the boys were playing soccer, some others were just throwing balls at eachother or just talked about videogames and such... As for the girls, they would rather sit and talk about things happaned at home, their new dolls, how they want to look when they get bigger, their favourite tvshows, or they'd act with eachother like a real family, they'd dance on their latest favourite songs and so on. And then there's this one girl, who's sitting alone, reading a book, under a tree. Ofcourse this girl got picked on, she never talked about any of the subjects the other girls cared about, she didn't participate in any of the games, … Other things they used as reasons to pick on her were the fact she wore glasses and the fact she was a little bit heavier than the other kids.
The reason why this girl was different? She just wanted to be herself, she loved reading books, especially fantasy, she didn't like playing with dolls or dancing. She couldn't help it. Usually they'd leave her alone, the days she got picked on, were the days she'd enter school while crying. Instead of asking the little girl whether she was alright, they just laughed at her, calling her a little crybaby, saying she was ugly, that she didn't belong, .. The comments didn't do her alot because she was used to it, but once they added her parents, it stung alot more. Saying things like; 'Did your parents finally realise your the worst? Did they finally put you up for adoption? I pity your parents for having you as a child!' Those things hurted the little girl more than anything.
Not even the teachers asked what was wrong, nobody cared for her.
The reason why sometimes she came to school crying, it did involve her parents. Nobody knew what this girl went through at home.
After school ended, the little girl started to make her way home. She walked to school and back because her house wasn't that far away. Once she could see her house, she started to get nervous because she saw her parents car was there, so that meant they're home. She walked to the front door and silently opened it. Once she opened the door, she noticed that they were in the kitchen. She made her way over there and said a silent 'I'm back.' Before turning around, trying to run to her room.. but to no avial. 'Atsuko, come here!' Came a strong voice. The voice obviously belonging to her father. 'H-hai.' The then 8 year old Atsuko turned around and slowly made her way towards her dad.
'We have visitors tonight, you know what that means right?' he said, scaring her slightly.
'H-hai.' 'Well say it out loud you stupid girl! I want to make sure you got it all right!' he shouted.
'Eto-- Stay inside t-the r-r-room, n-no sound, no s-sign of l-life or els-se.' She stammered on her words.
'At least you remembered that after the last “or else”, did you feed the dogs outside already?'
Atsuko paniced, she forgot this morning, what is she gonna do know...
'I-I-I forgot..' cam a silent whisper. Wich was answered with a slap across her face.
'You forgot? You forgot to feed them? What if we forgot to feed you? Huh? You little worth of nothing!' He screamed the last part. Then her mother turned towards her, 'Did you take money out of the moneybox, Atsuko? It seems like money has disapeared. 'N-no, I really didn't, sister came home yesterday, sh--' Atsuko was got hit again, this time on her head. 'Putting your deeds on your sisters back huh? You should be ashamed, we're already very ashamed of having you!' Her mother screamed while almost starting to cry. Once her dad had seen that, he started to walk towards her, ready to hit her so she tried to get away. Ofcourse he was faster and started to beat the small girl while reminding her over and over again how much they don't want her at all.
Once she finally was able to run away and lock herself up in the room, she started to cry her heart out. This was something that happened qiuet alot. You'd think someone would ask questions about her bruises but ofcourse, nobody cared.
This was pretty much how Atsuko's life was for years, untill her 14th birthday. The day she turned 14, she was stuck in her room, like always when her parents were home. Nobody of her family cared so no party was held, at least for her. There was a party downstaires, but it was one of those party's where the tripple rules were on; stay in the room, no sound, no sign of life.
She didn't mind though, because when there's a party, she'd know they wouldn't come to her room. The party was held because her sister was going to graduate from highschool. She was happy for her sister but her sister was pretty much the same as her parents, she hated her, she loathed her. Atsuko doesn't know what she ever did wrong but she was used to it. She was reading a book she brought from the library, but her peacefull reading got interupted by screams coming from downstaires. Thinking it would probably be nothing she continued reading. Suddenly she starts to smell something burned, she was about to open the door to look downstaires but aparently they locked her door from the outside. Seeing that there came smoke from underneath the door, she imediatly started to panic.
She ran towards her window, where she saw that everybody was outside by now, talking to the neighbours. She saw the firefighters trying to tone down the fire but aparently it didn't die down so easily. She tried to open the window but it was stuck, searching for something to break the glass with, she found an old box, nothing was inside it so she threw it through the glass. Her room was on the second floor so she tried to use a nearby standing tree to climb down but suddenly there was an explosion in her room wich caused her to fall on the ground. She hit the ground hard but still managed to crawl a little furder but she stopped when she heard a firefighter ask her parents whether they were sure nobody was left in there. 'No, this is all of us, nobody is in there anymore. We even got the dogs free so there's nothing to worry about.' She stopped moving there, she knew they didn't care but it hurted her so much. The fact they even made sure the dogs were fine but she could die...
She started to crawl back to the garden and hid in the dogshouse until she saw nobody there anymore. Feeling very lightheaded, she tried to stand up. She felt down a few times but at the end, she got up and started to walk. For some reason, she ended up in someones garden but before she could actually notice, she blacked out.
–
21 p.m. Oshima Mai, a middle aged woman just came back from her work as child carer in an orphanage. She went inside her house and took of her jacket, gave her dog some food and opened the backdoor so the poor boy, who stayed inside for the day could run around to lose his energy. She started to make food for herself, as she usually does that after her dog got his food, untill her dog came back in the house running towards her. She looked at him while saying, 'What is it, boy?' The dog imediatly ran back to the back door and looked behind itself to see whether she was following. Seeing that action, Mai decided to follow her dog. 'Easy there boy!' The dog ran outside and stopped behind their gardenhouse. As Mai aproached the dog, she saw a person lying there. Feeling whether the girl still had pulse, she decided to call an ambulance since it was pretty weak.
She came with the paramedics and stayed beside the girl.
Surgery was needed so Mai could only wait for news as she was scared for the girl, though she didn't know her at all.
When surgery was done, they brought the girl towards her room and asked Mai to fill in some questions. Since this girl's wallet wasn't with her, they didn't know her name or anything so they couldn't call any family. An officer came to talk to Mai about how she found her and such, but when he saw the girl, he recognized her. 'Hey, isn't that the girl from the Maeda-family? Didn't they say she died in the fire? They said they didn't know she was at home and were crying so hard on their loss this morning. How come she is here?'
Mai explained her story, how she found her in her garden but doesn't know anything about her as he finally nodded, showing he understands the situation.
'I see, well I should call her parents now.' As he stood up to leave, a faint whisper can be heared. 'Please don't call them, please don't call them, please don't call them, …' Her eyes only slightly opened. As more she repeated it, the more she started to cry while saying this.
'Maybe... we shouldn't call, let's wait untill she's fully awake?' Mai asked the officer.
'Yeah, maybe it's better that way...' He said, he pittied the girl.
Though they assured her they wouldn't call her, they couldn't calm her down and she needed to calm down because she needed the rest.
Mai stood up and took hold of her hand. 'Don't worry, I'll protect you, please go back to sleep, everything will be better once you're awake.' She said with a smile. Atsuko saw that she was sincere and she felt more on her ease now. Finally letting the anesthesia do his work.
