All reviewers only want one thing.
An RPG that gives you the option to kill NPCs when chatting with them. ah, that's the dream.

Joking aside. FF XII felt more like a single-player MMORPG. Unlike most FF games before it.

I think RPGs like FF need to be linear to a certain degree to be successful in its storytelling. For pacing those special moments.
But what the hell do I know. hahaha~

Oh yes, I'm sure if we had the option to kill NPCs in dialogue, the NPC population would drop drastically! Maybe they should make some of them respawn so that we can kill them again. I mean, why not? XD

You know, FFXIII does just that, but not only in the linear parts, but in your exploration as well.
For exemple, when you reach the really first big area of the game you have the option to just go along with the plot or explore at your will, I've been doing side missions, leveling for more than 10 hours, and believe it or not, even while doing that, there's still plenty of talk among the party.

Some places don't even have nothing special, but just by reaching that spot on the map you trigger a cut-scene.

Now I decided to move the story foward so I can farm for levels latter!

Do the enemies scale based on your level?

(e.g. like in Oblivion where getting more powerful just means the enemies get more powerful too)

For those who've played this far ahead in Dissidia, does anyone know what the 2 new play plans (grind lover and treasure hunter) provide? I put grind lover in and it gives me a black chocobo, but it doesn't appear that there is a reward after so many battles like you got with the 3 play plans you start off with. Is there any benefit in having them (which I assume there has to be)

As far as people know, they don't. Based on my own experience, I'd say surely the don't.
Whici I think in this game is for the best, because the AI can be pretty aggressive. SquareEnix said this was their hardest Final Fantasy and they sure weren't kidding. If you don't pay attention any common enemy can kill you, even if you are a little power leveled. (I mean a little because as the story progress the game limits you to how much you can level until you reach a next point in the plot, but fear not because the EXP acquired is not lost, it can be used latter on.)

A HK reviewer gave FFXIII a 4/10

How you give the story, described in his own words as 'an epic tear jerker', a 2/10 I dunno. And laughed at the graphics too, 9/10 'full marks here' o_0

And even the magazine issued a disclaimer saying the reviewer was a non-gamer. So why publish it?!

The black chocobo supposedly gives extra exp per battle. I haven't actually paid attention so I don't know for sure. Most of my characters are max level by now so I can't tell you for sure either. ^^; But if I'm not wrong it does give you triple exp on some battles sometimes. I never actually took note though...

Just shows how crappy HK game mags are. It's like "Hey, my 4-year-old brother has some time, let him do a review" :smhid
Actually, I bought that mag! They had another guy also do a 1-page review. And put those 2 next to each other on the left and right pages (I remember the other guy gave a 'safe' 9/10). Maybe to prevent FF fans from burning their office down.

Considering the average score for a rubbish game nowadays is 5, giving a 4 is like saying the game broke your console.

Dammit! I was reading another discussion about FFXIII on another game site where the discussion veered slightly off topic to talk about pros and cons of FFXII. Now I really want to play it again! But I just do not have the time for it though

Thanks Estrea! For the first time today I played enough to get 100% for lucky which gives you a small exp boost and makes the chocobo 'fly' if you know what I mean. Anyway, it reached a certain point after so many battles that it does give you an EXP boost for each battle, usually 1.5 to 2x the EXP. With Gyshal greens I think the highest I got was about 5x the EXP, which boosted up Terra's levels in one quick battle by up to 6 if I remember. :o So it seems the trade off is exp boost but no treasures, while the other play plan is pretty much vice versa. And I checked my stats, over 100hrs played. I've no doubt that it will go beyond the 140hrs save file I have for FFXII. :nervous

From Gamespot:

Quote
director Motomu Toriyama declared that the "Final Fantasy XIII overseas version is finally completed. I am sorry for the long wait. At present members of the development team in Japan are on a New Year holiday while waiting an approval of the master disc." He offered no updates on the game's two spin-offs, Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PlayStation 3) and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (PSP).

With the English-language version nearly gold, it appears that Final Fantasy XIII will indeed hit its March 9 launch date in Europe and North America. Though it was only released for the PS3 in Japan, the role-playing game will be available simultaneously on Sony's console and the Xbox 360 in the West. In the US and Canada, it has been rated T for Teen by the ESRB for a variety of reasons, including the inclusion of "holographic dancers clad in bikini tops, skimpy leotards, and backless chaps."

1UP reports that after playing the 360 demo of FFXIII there's 'no difference' to the PS3 edition

Note, that they don't do a side by side comparison, so it doesn't say there are no differences at all, I'd say there are, but it just doesn't seem like it to the naked eye with a smooth performance. Kudos to Square Enix if true.

Retailer leaks FFXIII Collector's Edition Content?

Quote
Available now for pre-order at the price of € 80 ($110), the retailer says the pack includes a soundtrack, art book, prequel story, comic book and collection of art cards.

While the game is advertised on a European retail site, you'd expect the US edition to be similar, if not identical. If you're looking for pictures, sorry, there are no pics available.

Sweet! I wonder if the soundtrack is the full 4-disc set or like with Dissidia, just a handful of tracks. And speaking of soundtracks, FFXIII's composer, Masashi Hamauzu, leaves Square Enix. Shame, he worked on FFX's soundtrack too which I remember being really good. I'm sure he has the talent to work on other projects so I don't think it will be the last we hear from him.
